For the prediction of the crack growth initiation from a blunt notch or a precrack in a prestrained material under plane strain tension and small-scale yielding conditions, a microscopic fracture criterion is proposed in terms of the crack tip opening displacement(COD) needed for the attainment of fracture strain at a microstructural distance. Smooth blunting of a crack tip with an initial root radius is assumed, and strain distributions on the crack-line axis are calculated at each deformation stage until the distributions against an original distance normalized to the COD are insensitive to an initial root radius. This case of no initial-root-radius effect is taken as for a sharp crack tip, on which the criterion is applied to determine the characteristic length of material from a critical COD for a fatigue-precracked specimen. The predicted COD at the fracture initiation from a crack with an initial root radius or a prestraining shows reasonable agreement with experimental values.

Post weld heat treatment(PWHT) of weldment of the low alloy steel is carried out to remove residual stress existing in weldment and to improve fracture toughness, but it is often observed that there occurs grain boundary failure and that fracture toughness decreases in weld heat affected zone(HAZ)because of PWHT. In this paper, the effect of heating rate and holding time of PWHT on fracture toughness were evaluated by crack opening displacement (CDD)test and micro-hardness test under the constant stress simulated residual stress in HAZ of Cr-Mo steel. The experimental results are as follow; (1)Transition temperature of weld HAZ after PWHT was dependent upon heating rate greater than holding time, and fracture toughness was decreased with an increase of the heating rate. (2)Softening ration of the notch tip was increased with holding time within one hour and saturated after one hour, but under applied stress it was increasing continuously. (3)The average hardness value in weld HAZ was increased with heating rate of PWHT.

Post weld heat treatment (PWHT) of weldment of the low alloy Cr-Mo steel, in general, is carried out not only to remove residual stress and hydrogen existing in weldment but to improve fracture toughness of weld heat affected zone (HAZ). There occur some problems such as toughness decrement and stress relief cracking (SRC) in the coarse grained region of weld HAZ when PWHT is practiced. Especially, embrittlement of structure directly relates to the mode of fracture and is appeared as the difference of fracture surface such as grain boundary failure. Therefore, in this paper, the effect of heating rate on PWHT embrittlement under the various kinds of stresses simulated residual stress in weld HAZ was evaluated by COD fracture toughness test and observation of fracture surface. Fracture toughness of weld HAZ decreased with increment of heating rate under no stress, but it was improved to increment of heating rate under the stress. Grain boundary failure didn't almost appear at the heating rate of 600.deg.C/hr but it appeared from being the applied stress of 294 MPa at 220.deg.C/hr and 196 MPa at 60.deg.C/hr.

The purpose of this study is to examine the fracture toughness of the welded pipe from the viewpoint of FATT for the S38 and S42 steels used widely as the pipe material. Post weld heat treatment(PW HT) was carried out like following conditions: temperature of 67$0^{\circ}C$, I hour of holding time and cooling in furnace. Fracture toughness was obtained by measuring the crack opening displacement(COD) of the notched specimens over the range of temperature from -14$0^{\circ}C$ to -$25^{\circ}C$. Hardness values at fusion line near around were the highest and the microstructures at welded zone were coarsened. Regardless of the pipe materials, COD and temperature curves of the as-welds were moved toward higher temperature compared with those of the parents. However, COD and temperature curves of the PWHT specimens were positioned at lower temperature compared with those of the as-welds. The more heat input causes to decrease the COD values at the constant temperature. It was verified through the recrystallization treatment that PWHT was attributed to move toward lower temperature region considerably due to the improved plastic deformation at the same applied COD value of 0.3mm and softening effect. In case of the weldment of S38 steel, cleavage fracture was observed at -105$^{\circ}C$ unlike the structural steels, in which brittle fracture mode was generally shown at - 196$^{\circ}C$.
The purpose of this study is elastic plastic finite element analysis for standard fracture toughness specimens. The principles of elastic-plastic fracture mechanics are shortly summarized and the special requirements for computational tools are derived. Possibilities to model the crack tip singularities are mentioned. The relevant fracture parameters like J-Integral and COD and their correlation are evaluated from elastic plastic finite element calculations of standard fracture toughnes specimens. The size and form of the plastic zone are shown. The comparion between experiment and caculation is discussed as well as the application of the limit load analysis.
Post weld heat treatment (PWHT) is carried out to increase the fracture toughness in heat affected zone(HAZ) and remove the residual stress. There occur some problems such as toughness decreement and stress relief cracking(SRC) in the coarse grained HAZ subjected to the effect of tempering treatment. Especially, embitterment of structure directly relates to the mode of fracture and is appeared as the difference of fracture surface, that is, grain boundary failure. Therefore, in this paper, PWHT was carried out under the stress of 0, 10, 20 and $30kg/cm^2$ to simulate residual stress in HAZ welded by heat input of 10, 30 and 40KJ/cm. Applied stress in weld HAZ during PWHT assisted precipitin of over saturated alloying element in the structure, and grain boundary failure according to welding heat input didn't almost appear at the heat input of 10 KJ/cm, but it appeared from being the applied stress of $30kg/cm^2$ at $30KJ/cm and 20kg/mm^2$ at 40KJ/cm.

Finite element simulations of tensile tests were performed to determine the equivalent stress - equivalent plastic strain curves, critical equivalent stresses, and critical equivalent plastic strains. Then, the curves were used as inputs to finite element simulations of fracture toughness tests to determine the plane strain fracture toughness. The critical COD was taken as the COD when the equivalent plastic strain at the crack tip reached a critical value, and it was used as a crack growth criterion. The relationship between the critical COD and the critical equivalent plastic strain or the reduction of area was found. The relationship between the plane strain fracture toughness and the product of the critical equivalent stress and the critical equivalent plastic strain was also found.
In this paper, the fracture toughness evaluation of the various microstructures such as HAZ, F.L and W.M in weldment of TMCP steel which has the softening zone owing to high heat input welding was carried out by using of the small punch(SP) test. In addition, the fracture toughness with the specimen orientation of rolled TMCP steel was investigated by means of SP test and the crack opening displacement (COD) test and then was compared with that of conventional SM50YB steel. From the results of SP test for TMCP steel, it could be seen that the SP energy transition curves of three different orientation were shifted to higher temperature side in order of S, T and L. But the {TEX}$DBTT_{SP}${/TEX} of each orientation specimen did not show a lot of differences and were quite lower than those of conventional SM50YB steel. The mechanical properties of HAZ structure in weldment of TMCP steel such as hardness, SP energy at room temperature and -196$^{\circ}C$ and the upper shelf energy of SP energy transition curve were lower than those of base metal due to softening. The {TEX}$DBTT_{SP}${/TEX} of each microstructure in weldment of TMCP steel increased in order of HAZ, F.L and W.M against base metal, but all microstructures showed a quite lower {TEX}$DBTT_{SP}${/TEX} than those of SM50YB steel.
The leak before break(LBB) concept is generalized on the design of LNG tanks, pressure vessels and nuclear reactor in that any leakage of containment, in whatever amount, will not result in catastropic failure. For this purpose it is necessary to determine the surface crack shape, the opening displacement and the risk of catastropic brittle fracture when it becomes a through crack. In this study the crack propagation behavior of surface flaws and the crack opening displacement of through cracks under combined membrane and bending stresses were investigated with fatigue tests and fracture toughness test of aluminium alloy A5083-O. And fracture mechanics analysis of the crack opening displacement of through cracks were made in order to develop a new model expressing the behaviors of COD under combined membrane and bending stresses.
Concrete, a mixed material, has heterogeniety, anisotrophy and nonlinearity. Therefore, in its 'racture analysis, it is more reasonable to evaluate its fracture toughness by applying the concept of 'racture mechanics rather than the strength concept. Up to the present the concepts of fracture mechanics which were applied to concrete have been divided into two main classes. The one is the concept of linear elastic fracture mechanics and the other is the concept of elastic-plastic fracture mechanics. But it has been pointed out that there are many problems and irrationalities in applying the concept of linear elastic fracture mechanics to concrete. In this study, the J -integral method and the COD method mainly used in the analysis of nonlinear fracture mechanics, were introduced and the three point bending test was carried out for investigating the effects of the variation of the maximum aggregate size and notch depth on the fracture behavior and the crack growth of concrete, and the relationships of fracture energy and crack opening displacement. According to the results of this study the more the maximum aggregate size and the notch depth increased, the more the nonlinearity of load-deflection behavior was remarkable. The increase of the coarse aggregate size created the more ductility of concrete. Thus concrete showed the more stable fracture. As for the path of the crack growth, the more the coarse aggregate size increased, the more it was irregulary deviated from the straight line but it was not almost affected by the variation of the notch depth. Also, the fracture energy increased according as the coarse aggregate size increased and the notch depth decreased.
