  • Even though the number of CO poisoning casualties caused by unintended idling for the vehicles equipped with keyless ignition systems is more than 70, the problem still remains unsolved and became social issue in the US, and Senates introduced the bill which urges NHSTA to make regulation for this accordingly. To meet market safety needs and the regulations, we decided to provide automatic shut-off system very soon. In this paper, we would like to describe how to validate vehicle shut-off timing including defining required tests and case selections considering vehicle condition, garage/room size and temperatures with several assumptions. We believe that safe implementation of the shut-off function is possible via this methodology and the results. As NHTSA must be interested in shut-off timing, the methodology can be enhanced and conclusions could be reflected highly in the future regulation in case we continue this study with NHTSA or any other 3-rd party institutes.

  • This research attempts an analysis that fuses the big data concerning weather variation and health care from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2014; it gives the weather factor as to what kind of influence there is for the incidence of food poisoning, and also endeavors to be helpful regarding national health prevention. By using R, the Logistic and Lasso Logistic Regression were analyzed. The main factor germ generating the food poisoning was classified and the incidence was confirmed for the germ of bacteria and virus. According to the result of the analysis of Logistic Regression, we found that the incidence of bacterial food poisoning was affected by the following influences: the average temperature, amount of sunshine deviation, and deviation of temperature. Furthermore, the weather factors, having an effect on the incidence of viral food poisoning, were: the minimum vapor pressure, amount of sunshine deviation and deviation of temperature. This study confirmed the correlation of meteorological factors and incidence of food poisoning. It was also found out that even if the incidence from two causes were influenced by the same weather factor, the incidence might be oppositely affected by the characteristic of the germs.

  • Recently, during the past five years, accidents of gas boiler using city gas have occurred 7.4 times more than those which use LP gas. The number of accidents has increased since the use of city gas boilers has increased. These boiler accidents resulted in 87% death from poisoning of CO, and casualty of the accidents was 4.3 times more than that of other types of accident. Hence this study makes the cause of accidents clear by separation the exhaust tube which is the cause of CO poisoning. Also, this study will establish the safety of heat-resistant silicon through testing the performance of heat-resistant silicon. The experiment showed that common silicon started hardening at $56^{\circ}C$ while the heat-resistant silicon did not begin carbonization until $606^{\circ}C$. Besides at the temperature of $150^{\circ}C$ which is the normal temperature of exhaust tube, common silicon leaked on the pneumatic test after deterioration, but the heat-resistant silicon maintained its original property. With these results, we judge that we can reduce the casualty by CO poisoning if we use the heat-resistant silicon to the connector of he exhaust tube.

  • The anion exchange membrane used in alkaline membrane fuel cells transports hydroxide ions, and ion conductivity affects fuel cell performance. Thus, the measurement of absolute hydroxide ion conductivity is essential. However, it is challenging to accurately measure hydroxide ion conductivity since hydroxide ions are easily poisoned in the form of bicarbonate by carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. In this study, we applied electrochemical ion exchange treatment to measure the absolute hydroxide ion conductivity of the anion exchange membrane. In addition, we investigated the effect of carbon dioxide poisoning of hydroxide ions on electrochemical performance by measuring bicarbonate conductivity. Commercial anion exchange membranes (FAA-3-50 and Orion TM1) and polyphenylene-based block copolymer (QPP-6F) were used.

  • Lead tolerance of $Pt/Al_2O_3$ catalysts was evaluated for CO oxidation depending on the properties of the alumina supports and base metals added as promoter. Among the four different alumina supports, the support with a large macropore volume (0.45 cc/g) and 5% Ce has shown the best resistence to lead poisoning. Most of the base metals added to the Pt-catalysts were found to be ineffective for improving lead resistence, but boron has shown an excellent lead tolerence, although it decreases the initial catalytic activity.

  • Indoor carbon monoxide (CO) concentration and personal CO exposures were measured Asan where CO poisoning from twenty coal usage briquette as a domestic fuel to cook and space heating. Twenty-five were houses selected from the Asan area for the survey conducted in February 1997. Newly developed passive CO samplers were placed in the kitchen and living room for the indoor concentration measurement and were worn by homemakers for personal exposure monitoring. The daily average of indoor CO concentration was 16ppm in the kitchen and 10ppm in the living room. The indoor concentration and personal exposures to CO were different in types of the space heating system. House ventilating methods and socioeconomic conditions were also important factors in determining the indoor and personal CO level in Asan.
