Atmospheric carbon monoxide (CO) and ozone $(O_3)$ play the important trace gases in tropospheric chemistry, through its concentration in the troposphere directly influences the concentrations of tropospheric hydroxyl (OH). Understanding the impact of CO and $O_3$ on the global tropospheric chemistry requires measurements of the global atmospheric CO and $O_3$ distributions. This study focuses on the identification of CO and O3 released in the East Asia between March 2000 and February 2004. During the period, the MOPITT instrument onboard the Earth Observing System (EOS)-Terra platform collected extensive measurement of CO. So we have used MOPITT data at 700hPa to analyze seasonal distribution of CO concentration. And the O3 measurements for this study were Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) and Dobson spectrometer provided NASA/GSFC and Yonsei University, Korea. During springtime, the CO and O3 concentrations were increased over East Asia for April, May, and June. CO and O3 transport and chemistry in the springtime in East Asia are studied by use of the HYbrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model.
We studied the effect of carbon monoxide(CO)-induced bypoxia on monoamine neurotransmitter and their syntheitc enzyme in rat brain. When the rats were acute or chronic intoxicated at CO 5000 ppm for 30 minutes or 2000 ppm for 1 week each 3 hours, dopamine content increased significantly with decreasing of its turnover in striatum and norepinephrine content was diminished in hypothalamus. 5-hydroxytryptamine content was increased significantly and its turnover was decreased both in striatum and hypothalamus. Tyrosine hydroxylase activity was reduced in striatum. These results suggest that inhibition of TH activity in CO-induced hypoxia is owing to lack of oxygen supply threfore NE content is decreased. We suggest that increasing of dopamine and 5-hydroxytryptamine are due to reduction of its turnover.
Hydrogen as an energy carrier in fuel cell offers perhaps the largest potential benefits of reduced emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases. The generation of high-purity hydrogen from hydrocarbon fuels is essential for efficient operation of fuel cell. Reduction of carbon monoxide to an acceptable level of 10ppm involves high temperature and low temperature water gas shift (WGS), followed by selective oxidation of residual carbon monoxide. The WGS reactor was designed and tested in this study to produce hydrogen-rich gas with CO to less than 5000 ppm. In the water gas shift operation, gas emerges from the reformer is taken through a high temperature shift (HTS) catalyst to reduce the CO concentration to about $2{\sim}4%$ followed to about 5000 ppm via a low temperature shift (LTS) catalyst.

The possible air pollution problems in a proposed underground highway are discussed using carbon monoxide (CO) as an indicator. Carbon monoxide concentrations in the underground highway depend on several factors, including the size of tunnel, the number of automobiles, the CO emission rate, and the tunnel ventilation rate. Using the estimated values, CO concentrations in the underground highway can be predicted. Without proper ventilation system, CO concentration in the underground highway can be dangerous level. However, the cost of operating the mandatory mechanical ventilation system may be tremendouslyy high and may be technically unrealistic to implement. If the underground highway is constructed with proper ventilation system, a continuous air pollution monitoring system with alarming function must be installed to alert personnel of serious air pollution built up in the underground highway. Traffic must be restricted, whenever the inside air pollution levels exceed agreed values. Short distances between evacuation exits are necessary for emergency situations or malfunction of ventilation system.
The effects of ginseng saponins on the distribution of nerve cells in cerebral cortex of carbon monoxide (CO)-intoxicated mice were studied in the young ($5{\sim}8$ weeks) and aged ($43{\sim}52$ weeks) mice. Mice were exposed to 5000 ppm of CO for 40 minutes (72% HbCO). After that, nerve cells in motor(area 4), somatosensory(area 3) and visual(area 17) area of cerebral cortex was observed. In young mice, the number of nerve cells in each area was significantly decreased on 1st, 7th and 14th day after CO intoxication. In aged mice, that was also decreased after CO intoxication. Especially the number of the nerve cells in motor and somatosensory area was significantly decreased on 1st and 7th day, while that in visual area was decreased only on 1st day. The number of nerve cells in young mice pretreated with ginseng saponins were significantly decreased less on 7th and 14th day than that of untreated mice. The number of nerve cells in each area of normal aged mice was larger than that of normal young mice. The results suggest that CO exposure causes local degeneration or disturbance of nerve cells and delayed neurologic sequelae, while ginseng saponins might play a role of protective action on the nerve cells which were damaged by CO.
This study was performed to investigate the effects of ginseng saponins on the cerebral energy metabolite's contents influenced by carbon monoxide(CO) intoxication. Each experimental group was divided young ($5{\sim}8$ weeks) and aged ($43{\sim}52$ weeks) rats, and they were exposed at 5,000 ppm CO (72%HbCO) for 30 min. One of the other groups was pretreated with ginseng saponins for 5 days before CO intoxication. The contents of cerebral energy metabolites in cerebral cortex, stratum and hypothalamus were measured. In cerebral cortex of both young and aged rats, the levels of ATP and creatine phosphate were significantly decreased, while those of lactate were significantly increased. There was no difference between the levels of cerebral energy metabolites of young and aged rats. Pretreatment of ginseng saponins before CO intoxication lowered decrease of the levels of cerebral energy metabolites and ATP levels were significantly recovered. On the other hands, contents of lactate in stratum and hypothalamus of young rats were significantly increased and the levels of ATP and creatine phosphate in stratum and hypothalamus were completely recovered at 2 weeks after CO intoxication. The results suggest that ginseng saponins have an ameliorating action against disturbance of the cerebral energy metabolites by CO intoxication.
Purpose: Suicide attempts are known to be influenced by mass media reports. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of mass media reporting celebrity suicides on an increase of intentional carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning and suicide attempts. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of the consecutive patients who presented with suicide attempts to the Emergency Department of Ajou University Hospital during a 24 month period. We obtained the demographic data, any past history of suicide attempt and the methods of suicide attempts from the medical records of the suicide attempters. Time series analysis was conducted for evaluating the influence of mass media reporting of celebrity suicide on the suicide rates. Results: We finally enrolled 770 patients during the study period. The total number of suicide attempts by CO poisoning was 18 and the average number of suicide attempts by CO was $0.33{\pm}0.73$ per week. All of the suicide attempts by CO poisoning occurred after a celebrity committed suicide using CO from burning charcoal. Conclusion: This study showed that celebrity suicide by CO poisoning resulted in the Werther effect, which made the rate of intended CO poisoning increase, and the study provided further evidence for the need to actively restrain mass media reporting of suicide to decrease the Werther effect.
After initial recovery from acute carbon monoxide(CO) intoxication, some patients occasionally undergo severe neuropsychiatric deterioration, which is called postanomic delayed encephalopathy(sequelae). This is the clinical study about one patient, a 53-year-old woman, diagnosed with delayed encephalopathy after acute CO intoxication. The patient's symptoms were mental dysfunction including memory impairment and disorientation, aphasia, atrophy and weakness throughtout the body. She had completely recovered after an anomic episode, but the neurological symptoms that developed were preceded by an interval of apparent nomality.(the 'lucid interval'). She was characterized as suffering deficiency syndrome of the heart(心虛) and was prescribed for her an Ansinschungnoi-tang(安神淸腦湯), and thereafter her symptoms improved remarkably. For the evaluation of clinical improvement, we use the Modified Barthel Index(MBI).
Methanopyrus kandleri is a hyperthermophilic methanogen that represents one of the most heat-resistant organisms: the maximum growth temperature of M. kandleri is $110^{\circ}C$. A random sequence analysis of the genomic DNA of M. kandleri has been performed to obtain genomic information. More than 200 unique sequence tags were obtained and compared with the sequences in the GenBank and PIR databases. About 30% of the analyzed tags showed strong sequence similarity to previously identified genes involved in various cellular processes such as biosynthesis, transport, methanogenesis, or metabolism. When statistics relating to the frequency of codons were examined, the sequenced open reading frames showed highly biased codon usage and a high content of charged amino acids. Among the identified genes, a homologue of the catalytic subunit of carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (CODH) that reduces $CO_2$ to CO was cloned and sequenced in order to examine its detailed gene structure. The cloned gene includes consensus promoters. The amino acid sequence of the cloned gene shows a strong homology with the CODH genes from methanogenic Archaea, especially in the presumed binding sites for Fe-S centers.
