  • In this article, recent trends of technology in design of CNC system for machine tools which has increased in number and applications by needs for FA(Factory Automation), save of labor in various industries, are described. These technology improvements in CNC system take place especially in the field of performance, reliability, compactness, price, etc. From these technology improvements, the theme of "performance improvements of CNC system" are selected and mostly described in this article. Also, the major features of a CNC system product of our company and its characteristics in system design are briefly described.described.

An International Comparison of Technological Systems : The Case of CNC Machine Tools in Korea, Sweden, and U.S.A.

  • Focusing on a product, this paper reconstructs the concept of technological systems first introduced by Carlsson and Stankiewicz (1991). Based on the model and our earlier works, we compare the salient features of technological systems for computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine tools in Korea, Sweden, and the United States.. We also try to measure the performance of the systems in an international comparison. Major findings are as follows: (1) The length of 'learning period' for local (national) technological system is substantial, even though it is a catching-up case. (2) The key success factor of the technological system appears to be the connectivity among various actors or infrastructures, rather than just the existence or formation of those. (3) In three countries' experience, the government played an important role in the formation of each own technological system. (4) The performance of Korea's technological system for CNC machine tools during the past two decades(1981-97) seems to be better than that of Sweden and the U.S. Lastly, many policy implication are presented.

Velocity profile generation methods for industrial robots and CNC machine tools

  • We propose software algorithms which provide the characteristics of acceleration/deceleration essential to high dynamic performance at the transient state where industrial robots or CNC machine tools start and stop. The path error, which is one of the most significant factors in performance evaluation of industrial robots and CNC machine tools, is analyzed for linear, exponential, and parabolic acceleration/deceleration algorithms in case of circular interpolation. The analysis shows that the path error depends on the acceleration/deceleration routine and the servo control system. In experiments, the entire control algorithm including the proposed acceleration/deceleration algorithms is executed on the motion control system with a floating point digital signal processor(DSP) TMS320C30 as a CPU. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms are very effective in controlling axes of motion of industrial robots or CNC machine tools with the desired characteristics.

  • The accuracy of the machine tools is degraded because of thermal error of structure due to thermal variation. To improve the accuracy of a machine tools, measurement and prediction of thermal error is very important. The main part of thermal source is spindle due to high speed with friction. The thermal error of spindle is very important because it is over 10% in total thermals errors. In this paper, the suitable thermal error prediction technology for machine tools with open architecture controller is developed and implemented to machine tools. Two thermal error prediction technologies, neural network and multi-linear regression, are investigated in several methods. The multi-linear regression method is more effective for implementation to CNC. The developed thermal error prediction technology is implemented on the internal function of CNC.

  • Interactive Measuring part Program Generating Tools (IMPPGT) realized on the FANUC 15MA using touch trigger probes and interactive macro functions os the CNC were developed for an intelligent measuring and inspection systems on the machine tools. Menu driven measuring and inspection functions of the IMPPGT were studied and implemented on the CNC through the macro executer and ROM writer. In order to automate measurement and inspection procedures in machine shops measuring G Code system was also proposed. Using the developed measuring G Code system on the machine tool untended measurement and inspection operation was able to be realized in FMS lines.

  • With the increasing trend of making manufacturing system intelligent and autonomous, the introduction of robot-assist automation, like machine tending system for automated operation of CNC machine tools, is being actively carried out at many industrial sites. Most important part of this intelligent system to install machine tending system, is interface programming between the CNC machine tools and the industrial robot. Despite this importance, however, the machine tending system has many setup problems. it is necessary for difficult re-program of both controllers whenever a new CNC machine tool or robot is introduced. And, the helps of external engineers is required even though trivial changes due to the complex structure of the machine tending system. Authors of this paper introduces the integrated system of the interface between heterogeneous CNC machine tools and industrial robots. In addition, the digital twin implemented inside the machine tool controller enable shop-floor operators to change the interface programming easily. To implement this system, an integrated development environment for 1) an intelligent HMI platform that provide standardized interfaces to heterogeneous CNC machine tools and 2) a robot platform developing application software of various robots, was established. For easy un-tact environment, this paper explain the development of 3) a game-engine based web program of controlling and monitoring machine tending system remotely.

Implementation of Web-based Virtual Machine Tools (Web 기반 가상공작기계의 구현)

  • A key factor far realizing the internet-based virtual manufacturing system(VMS) and virtual enter-prise(VE) is how to precisely and effectively represent the machine elements and mechanics. In this paper, we present methods to represent the numerically controlled machine tools in the internet environment. The method is composed of: 1) geometrical modeling of the machine tools, 2) kinematic modeling for the movements of the machine tools, and 3) representing the developed model in the internet infrastructure. Based on the models. a web-based virtual machine tools (WVMT) is developed, and it can be accessed at hrrp://wvmt.postech.ac.kr. The WVMT can be used for various purposes: 1) web-based virtual manufacturing system, 2) web-based CAM system, and 3) CNC educational tools for the vocational school through internet.

  • Software linear and exponential acceleration/deceleration algorithms for control of machine axes of motion in industrial robots and CNC machine tools are proposed. Typical hardware systems used to accelerate and decelerate axes of motion are mathematically analyzed. Discrete-time state equations are derived from the mathematical analyses for the development of software acceleration/deceleration algorithms. Synchronous control method of multiple axes of motion in industrial robots and CNC machine tools is shown to be easily obtained on the basis of the proposed acceleration/deceleration algorithms. The path error analyses are carried out for the case where the software linear and exponential acceleration/deceleration algorithms are applied to a circular interpolator. A motion control system based on a floating point digital signal processor (DSP) TMS 320C30 is developed in order to implement the proposed algorithms. Experimental results demonstrate that the developed algorithms and the motion control system are available for control of multiple axes and nonlinear motion composed of a combination of lines and circles which industrial robots and CNC machine tools require.

  • This paper proposes Internet-based checking scheme for machine-tools with a variant CNC. Checking points defined in this research are classified into two categories such as structured point and operational point. The formal includes the vibration of bearing, temperature of spindle unit and another periodical management. And the latter includes oil checking, clamp locking/unlocking and machining on/off status. Through this research, for the global management of variant CNC machines interspersed with CAC and OAC in manufacturing system, the suitable environment for Internet-based checking of variant CNC machines was designed and the checking methods for CAC and OAC machines were compared with each other.
