The sustainable growth of Construction Management(CM) market depends on clients'acceptance from positive project outcomes of CM services. Achieving the positive outcomes requires CM firms'competency and efforts. Equally, it is critical to understand and overcome barriers of CM performance, which cause inefficiencies and under-performance of CM services. The objective of the study is to identify and discuss the barriers of CM performance during pre-construction stages in private CM projects based on the FMEA technique. Major findings basically suggest that clients and CM firms have roles to play, individually and collaboratively, in order to improve CM performance by eliminating performance barriers.
This study was conducted to investigate the performance of sound absorption type-noise barriers manufactured with a combination of wood particles used for particleboard, recycled waste newspaper, and cement. An average density of wood-combined cement board was in the range from 0.83 to 0.96 g/cm3, showing relatively low-density board. Regardless of types of cement bonded board or wooden board, the board with concave holes(凹)-formed surfaces showed greater sound absorption coefficient compared to those of flat surface boards. The board density was not related with those coefficients. Accordingly, it was concluded that concave or deep corrugated surface structure has played an important role in sound absorption for the application of sound absorption type-noise barrier.

This study was conducted to propose the optimum minimum requirement of cutoff system composed of the impermeable soil layer and vertical barrier in offshore landfill for prevention pollution leakage by seepage, advection, and dispersion numerical analyses under steady state. According to the study results, the minimum requirement of impermeable soil layer is below $1{\times}10^{-6}cm/s$ of hydraulic conductivity with more than 500 cm thickness or a system with equivalent cutoff effect. The minimum requirement of vertical barrier is below $1{\times}10^{-6}cm/s$ of hydraulic conductivity with more than 50 cm thickness or a system with equivalent cutoff effect. In addition, the vertical barrier should be embedded enough to seal securely with the impermeable soil layer for working cutoff effect.

The local migration or movement behavior of fishes in streams are related to feeding, spawning, growing, dispersing, and refuging. The pale chub (Zacco platypus) is a dominant species that migrates locally and inhabits in river and stream in Korea. However, dams, weirs, culverts and other regulatory structures are physical barriers that limit fish movement and fragment habits and populations. If main stream and off-channel habitats are connected with culverts, they would restrict the small fish as pale chub movement due to the high flow velocities and low depths. But in Korea, there is no experimental study to evaluate the swimming performance of species in Korea. Therefore, it is difficult to proposed that design guidelines for pass fishes through culverts. The purpose of this experimental study is to evaluate the swimming performance of pale chubs. A series of swimming performance test has been used in both of the fixed velocity and the incremental velocity methods in an experimental flume. As a result, the critical swimming speed for pale chub(body length 8.9 cm) was found to be about 0.7 m/s. Therefore, the flow velocity for culvert design in the low flow condition should not be exceed the its swimming ability, especially 0.7 m/s for pale chubs(body length 8.9 cm). And the minimum depth for culvert design in the low flow condition should not be lower than the fish body height add a dorsal fin height.

Compacted clay materials are often used to form barriers for waste disposal by means of landfill. The performance of clay barrier depends on its permeability characteristics under the site environments. The study discusses permeability characteristics of 4 types of permeants through a compacted clayey soil. Permeabilities are measured using the modified rigid-wall permeater and with water, PEG, Ethanol, and TCE, ranging 80 to 3.4 of dielectric constants. Results of the study are as follows : 1) Absolute permeabilities of Ethanol and TCE that their dielectric constants are lower than that of water are $K=1.0{\times} 10^{-12} cm^2$, and $5.8{\times} 10^{-12} cm^2$, respectively, that is, 1.67, and 9.67 times of permeability of water, respectively. Absolute permeability and dielectric constant of water are $K=6{\times} 10^{-13} cm^2$, and 80, respectively. 2) Changes in absolute permeability of Ethanol and TCE converge to a constant after 3.5 pore volume of permeant flows through the clay sample. This can be explained that diffuse double layer of clay is no longer reacted with permeants and contracted their pores. However there is no change in absolute permeability when water is used as a per-meant. 3) It is found that absolute permeability in reversely proportional to the value of dielectric constant of the permeants. Change in absolute permeability of the permeants with 40 or over of dielectric constant is not significant. However change in absolute permeability of the permeant with 30 or lower dielectric constant is abruptly increased. 4) A lower absolute permeability of PEG is found because of its high viscosity.
PURPOSES : In this research, an SB3-level roadside barrier for a highway transition zone that meets the newly established guide Installation and Management Guide for Roadside Safety Appurtenance is developed. Its performance is evaluated by a numerical simulation and real-scale vehicle impact test. METHODS : The commercial explicit dynamic software LS-DYNA is utilized for impact simulation. An FE model of a passenger vehicle developed and released by the National Crash Analysis Center (NCAC) at George Washington University and a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) model developed by the TC226/CM-E Work Group are utilized for impact simulation. The original vehicle models were modified to reflect the conditions of test vehicles. The impact positions of the passenger vehicle and truck to the transition guardrail were set as 1/2 and 3/4 of the transition region, respectively, according to the guide. RESULTS : Based on the numerical simulation results of the existing transition barrier, a new structural system with improved performance was suggested. According to the result of a numerical simulation of the suggested structural system, two sets of transition barriers were manufactured and installed for real-scale vehicle impact tests. The tests were performed at a test field for roadside safety hardware of the Korea Highway Corporation Research Institute. CONCLUSIONS : The results of both the real-vehicle impact tests and numerical simulations of the developed transition barrier satisfied the performance criteria, and the results of numerical simulation showed good correlation with the test results.
In order to improve the device performances of organic electroluminescent devices (OELDs), the efficiency of carrier injections into the organic layers from electrodes and the balance of injected carrier densities in the emission region are critical factors. Especially, energy barriers, which exist at the interfaces between electrodes and organic layers, interrupt carrier injections, which lead to unbalanced carrier densities. In this study, ${\alpha}-septithiophene$ (${\alpha}$-7T), as a buffer layer, and composite cathode composed of Al and CsF were formed to improve hole and electron injections, respectively. The orientations of ${\alpha}$-7T molecules were adjusted using the simple rubbing method and the mass ratio of CsF was varied from 1 to 10 wt%. Upon investigation of we believe that the 3 wt% mass ratio of CsF and the horizontal orientation of ${\alpha}$-7T molecules are the optimized conditions for achieving better the performance of OELDs. Device with the horizontally oriented 20 nm thick ${\alpha}$-7T layer and composite cathode shows a turn-on voltage of 7V and luminance of 172 cd/$m^2$ at 4 mA/$cm^2$.
Recently, smart wearable products, including electromyography (EMG) measurement devices and clothing, have been developed to monitor users' exercise levels, muscle activation, and muscle balance more effectively during fitness activities. However, technical and socioeconomic barriers, such as flexibility and durability, still pose challenges in terms of comfort, ease of wear, and wearability of smart clothing, which includes devices and circuits. To address these issues, this study developed a wearable EMG device integrated with clothing to collect valid EMG signals from desired muscles while maintaining comfort, functionality, and ease of wear. After deriving a combined structure that could stably position the wearable device within the clothing, a prototype was manufactured and evaluated for fit, compression, comfort, and exercise comfort test by ten participants (height = 176.2 cm, weight = 76.4 kg, chest circumference = 101.2 cm). The study found that the prototype had smaller circumferences around the chest, waist, and abdomen compared to commercial products, resulting in lower ratings for wearing comfort and ease of wear. However, the prototype received high ratings for fitting, pressure, and the exercise comfort test. Valid signals were obtained when the EMG device was combined to the prototype for the rectus femoris muscle, indicating stable positioning of the device during exercise.

Recently, as the down-scailing of field-effect transistor devices continues, Schottky-barrier field-effect transistors (SB-FETs) have attracted much attention as an alternative to conventional MOSFETs. SB-FETs have advantages over conventional devices, such as low parasitic source/drain resistance due to their metallic characteristics, low temperature processing for source/drain formation and physical scalability to the sub-10nm regime. The good scalability of SB-FETs is due to their metallic characteristics of source/drain, which leads to the low resistance and the atomically abrupt junctions at metal (silicide)-silicon interface. Nevertheless, some reports show that SB-FETs suffer from short channel effect (SCE) that would cause severe problems in the sub 20nm regime.[Ouyang et al. IEEE Trans. Electron Devices 53, 8, 1732 (2007)] Because source/drain barriers induce a depletion region, it is possible that the barriers are overlapped in short channel SB-FETs. In order to analyze the SCE of SB-FETs, we carried out systematic studies on the Schottky barrier overlapping in short channel SB-FETs using a SILVACO ATLAS numerical simulator. We have investigated the variation of surface channel band profiles depending on the doping, barrier height and the effective channel length using 2D simulation. Because the source/drain depletion regions start to be overlapped each other in the condition of the $L_{ch}$~80nm with $N_D{\sim}1\times10^{18}cm^{-3}$ and $\phi_{Bn}$$\approx$ 0.6eV, the band profile varies as the decrease of effective channel length $L_{ch}$. With the $L_{ch}$~80nm as a starting point, the built-in potential of source/drain schottky contacts gradually decreases as the decrease of $L_{ch}$, then the conduction and valence band edges are consequently flattened at $L_{ch}$~5nm. These results may allow us to understand the performance related interdependent parameters in nanoscale SB-FETs such as channel length, the barrier height and channel doping.
The aggressive scaling of dynamic random-access memory capacitors has increased the need to maintain high capacitance despite the limited physical thickness of electrodes and dielectrics. This makes it essential to use high-k dielectric materials. TiO2 has a large dielectric constant, ranging from 30~75 in the anatase phase to 90~170 in rutile phase. However, it has significant leakage current due to low energy barriers for electron conduction, which is a critical drawback. Suppressing the leakage current while scaling to achieve an equivalent oxide thickness (EOT) below 0.5 nm is necessary to control the influence of interlayers on capacitor performance. For this, Pt and Ru, with their high work function, can be used instead of a conventional TiN substrate to increase the Schottky barrier height. Additionally, forming rutile-TiO2 on RuO2 with excellent lattice compatibility by epitaxial growth can minimize leakage current. Furthermore, plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD) can be used to deposit a uniform thin film with high density and low defects at low temperatures, to reduce the impact of interfacial reactions on electrical properties at high temperatures. In this study, TiO2 was deposited using PEALD, using substrates of Pt and Ru treated with rapid thermal annealing at 500 and 600 ℃, to compare structural, chemical, and electrical characteristics with reference to a TiN substrate. As a result, leakage current was suppressed to around 10-6 A/cm2 at 1 V, and an EOT at the 0.5 nm level was achieved.
