The photoelectric responses of a biodevice consisting of chlorophyll $\alpha$ Langmuir-Blodgett film were investigated. Chlorophyll $\alpha$ Langmuir-Blodgett films were deposited onto ITO and Au coated glass. To confirm film formation, surface analysis of chlorophyll $\alpha$ Langmuir-Blodgett film was carried out by measurement using atomic force microscopy. The metal/insulator/metal structured biodevice was constructed by depositing aluminum onto the chlorophyll $\alpha$ Langmuir-Blodgett film surface. To investigate the photoelectric response, the current-voltage characteristic was measured by the conducting metal tip. The photoswitching function and transient photovoltage characteristics of the proposed device were measured by irradiation with Ar ion laser and $N_2$ pulse laser, respectively. This research suggested that the proposed biodevice consisting of chlorophyll $\alpha$ could be applied to the molecular scale biosensor and/or bioelectronic device.

Chlorophyll a and b, pheophytin a and b and $\beta$-carotene, crude chlorophylls and carotenoids (CCC) extracts of mustard leaf kimchi were isolated by DEAE-sepharose CL-6B and Sepharose CL-6B colume and TLC. The effects of chlorophyll a and b, pheophytin a and b and $\beta$-carotene on linoleic acid autoxidation were examined by the determination of peroxide value and conjugated dienoic acid content. Among them, chlorophyll a showed greater antioxidative activity than others, followed by chlorophyll b, pheophytin a, pheophytin b and $\beta$-carotene. Degradation of pheophytin b was observed to be slower than others and $\beta$-carotene showed highest degradation level during the autoxidation reaction of linoleic acid.
Ocean color products derived from remote sensing satellite data are useful for monitoring the sea water quality such as the concentrations of chlorophyll, sediments and dissolved organic matter. Currently, ocean color products derived from MODIS data can be requested from NASA over the internet. However, due to the bandwidth limitation of most users in this region, and the time delay in data delivery, the products cannot be use for near-real time monitoring of sea water chlorophyll. CRISP operates a MODIS data receiving station for environmental monitoring purposes. MODIS data have been routinely received and processed to level 1B. We have adapted the higher level processing algorithms from the Institutional Algorithms provided by NASA to run in a standalone environment. The implemented algorithms include the MODIS ocean color algorithms. Seasonal chlorophyll concentration composite can be compiled for the region. By comparing the near-real time chlorophyll product with the seasonal composite, anomaly in chlorophyll concentration can be detected.
On the east slope of the front ranges of the Colorado Rockies, USA, three species of Populus are distributed at different elevations from the Great Plains to the timberline. At elevations 1, 720m (P. sargentii), 2, 335m (P.angustifolia) and 3, 190m (P.tremuloides) chlorophyll cotents of leaves of thses dioecious trees were determined. Total chlorophyll content was in the range of 0.86-1.56mg/g leaf, increasing with elevation as a second-degree polynomial, and the peak content was estimated to be reached at about 2, 800m. Total chlorophyll content was greater in female than in male trees in the two higher elevation species, but not in P. sargentii, the low elevation species. Chlorophyll b content was greater than chlorophyll a content in the same two higher elevation species. The increase of chlorophyll b than to increase of chlorophyll a content. These phenomena appear to be the result of adaptation of these species to different environmental conditional at different elevation. Sequential distribution of plant populations on environmental gradients in such a way that variation in given plant characters paralell the environmental gradient must occur not only in ecotypes of a species, but also in different but closely related species.
This study was carried out to develop a real-time grouping system of chlorophyll contents of rice crop canopy for precision agriculture. The system measured reflected light energy of a rice canopy on a paddy field from visual to near-infrared range and analyzed the collected information of chlorophyll contents of rice crop canopy with given position data. The four filters, 560 nm $({\pm}10nm)$, 650 nm $({\pm}25nm)$, 700 nm $({\pm}12nm)$, and 850 nm $({\pm}40nm)$, were used for a multiple regression to estimate the chlorophyll contents of rice crop canopy. Every $0.2m^2$ area of the open field was inspected at a distance of 1 m above the rice canopy. According to the results of verification test, the chlorophyll content grouping by a commerical chlorophyll meter (SPAD) and by the developed system showed 58.7% match for five-stage chlorophyll contents of rice crop canopy grouping and 93.5% for the $five{\pm}1-stage$ grouping. In addition, the results showed 63.0% match for three-stage grouping and 100.0% for the $three{\pm}1-stage$ grouping.

The chlorophyll-a concentration measured by OCTS could be used for observing the physical phenomena such as eddies, fronts, and up welling in the oceans as well as for studying the ecology of phytoplankton. In this study, biological and physical features in the East Sea/Japan Sea (the East Sea) and the Yellow Sea observed by OCTS are analyzed in comparison with other satellite data. And in situ chlorophyll data were compared with OCTS Level 2 chlorophyll data. There was a striking correspondence between the satellite chlorophyll structure and other satellite data in the East Sea in the spring. Very complicated ring structures in the 557 are reflected in chlorophyll structure. In the Yellow Sea, the surface structure was rather simple. While the discrepancies between in situ and OCTS algorithm version 3 chlorophyll were small in the East Sea, those for the Yellow Sea were rather big. Comparison with CZCS data for similar time of the year (May-June) shows that OCTS chlorophyll is higher in general. Although the error is partly due to the fact that NASDA chlorophyll algorithm is an empirical algorithm for case 1 water, how much of this error is also due to the errors in sensor calibration or in atmospheric correction is not clear.
Effects of chlorophyll and visible light exposure on the volatile formations and headspace oxygen content were studied in lard model systems at $55^{\circ}C$. Samples with or without addition of chlorophyll under light underwent photosensization or photooxidation, respectively. Total volatiles (TI) in lard with 5 ppm chlorophyll photosensization were 19 times higher than those in visible light photooxidized samples for 48 hr while TI in lard with chlorophyll in the dark were not significantly different from those in photooxidized samples (p>0.05). Headspace oxygen content in photosensitized lard decreased from 21 to 15% for 48 hr but that in photooxidized lard or that in lard with chlorophyll in the dark did not change significantly (p>0.05), which indicates that lard system used in this study is a photosensitizer-free model system and the presence of chlorophyll accelerated the lipid oxidation only under visible light. Oxidation mechanisms of photooxidation with or without presence of photosensitizers under visible light were not the same based on the difference of oxidized volatile profiles and headspace oxygen depletion.
Increasing global energy demand has resulted in an energy crisis. The dye sensitizer solar cell (DSSC) is an alternative source because of its ability to convert the sun's energy into electrical energy. Our aim was to determine the effect of synthesized Ni(II)-Chlorophyll for enhancing the efficiency of solar cells based DSSC. Complex compound Ni(II)-Chlorophyll was successfully synthesized as a dye sensitizer of $Ni(NO_3)_2.6H_2O$ and chlorophyll ligand with saponification method. Characterization results with spectrophotometer UV-Vis showed that the complex compounds of Ni(II)-Chlorophyll have a maximum wavelength of 295.00 nm, 451.00 and 665.00 nm. The bond between the ligand and metal appears in the vibration Ni-O at wave number $455.2cm^{-1}$. Complex compoun Ni(II)-Chlorophyll has a magnetic moment 7.10 Bohr Magneton (BM). The performance of complex compound Ni(II)-Chlorophyll as a dye sensitizer shows the value of short-circuit current (Jsc) at $3.00mA/cm^2$, open circuit voltage (Voc) at 0.15 V and the efficiency (${\eta}$) 0.20%.
This study analyzed the changes of chlorophyll and ascorbic acid contents according to the extraction temperatures and the number of soakings using five kinds of Korean and Japanese green tea(3 kinds of green tea and 2 kinds of tea bag) which were obtained from local markets in Korea and Japan. The findings are as follows: 1. The chlorophyll contents of Japanese green tea were $2\sim3$ times higher than those of Korean green tea. 2. The chlorophyll contents of Korean green tea in high and middle grades were increased with increasing temperature $(80>70>60^{\circ}C)$ but the contents in low grade were increased with decreasing temperature. The contents of chlorophyll in Japanese green tea were almost similar in low, middle and high grades. 3. Ascorbic acid content was higher in low grade Korean green tea but it was higher in high and middle grades of Japanese green tea. Chlorophyll contents of Japanese green tea were higher than those of Korean green tea but ascorbic acid contents of Korean green tea were higher than those of Japanese green tea.
Developmental of photosynthetic pigments and changes in chlorophyll fluorescence of dark-grown rice seedlings were studied during greening. Light-illumination stimulated accumulations of total chlorophylls and carotenoids in leaves of etiolated seedlings, accompanied by a decrease in the ratio of chlorophyll a to chlorophyll b. When the composition of carotenoids was analyzed, violaxanthin level was shown to increase up to 24 h after the beginning of light illumination, followed by a subsequent decline. In contrast to this, zeaxanthin level increased consistently with progress of deetiolatin. The role of zeaxanthin is discussed in relation to chlorophyll fluorescence quenching. A study on chlorophyll fluorescence kinetics of the rice seedlings being deetiolated showed a time-dependent increase in Fv/Fm (yield of variable fluorescence/maximum yield of fluoresecnece) ratios, indicating that greening is responsible for the activation of photochemical reaction centers of the photosystem. When chlorophyll fluorescence quenching was examined, qNP (nonphotochemical quenching) and qE (energy-dependent quenching) exhibited a time-dependent decline with progress of greening. The presented results indicate that greening-induced development of the photosynthetic machinery is associated the conversion of the carotenoid violaxanthin to zeaxanthin, suggesting that zeaxanthin synthesized in the illuminated leaves may provide the protection from the damage when etiolated plants are exposed to light.
