Flavor is one of the most important factors for determining wine characteristics and quality. Flavor pattern of wines(brewed from America, France, Italy, Chile, and Australia) was analyzed by the electronic nose that is equipped with 12 metal oxide sensors. In the results, the flavor pattern of wines was discriminated according to their origins by the principal component analysis(PCA). Each proportion of the first principal component score in the PCA plot was 94.79%(America), 73.62%(France), 99.06%(Italy), 96.74%(Chile), and 96.53%(Australia), respectively. Consequently, the imported wines could be practically differentiated into one from the other origins by volatile properties, suggesting that electronic nose could be successfully used for easy screening and quality evaluation of wines.

We explored the GALEX UV properties of optical red sequence galaxies in 4 rich Abell clusters at z ~ 0.1. In particular, we tried to find a hint of merger-induced recent star formation (RSF) in red sequence galaxies. Based on the NUV - r' colors of the galaxies, about 36% of the post-merger galaxies were classified as RSF galaxies with a conservative criterion (NUV - $r^{\prime}{\leq}5$), and that number was doubled (~ 72%) when using a generous criterion (NUV - $r^{\prime}{\leq}5.4$). Post-merger galaxies with strong UV emission showed more violent, asymmetric features on the deep optical images. Also it turned out that all massive RSF galaxies (Mr' < -22 and NUV - $r^{\prime}{\leq}5$) exhibited post-merger signatures. Our results suggested that only 30% of RSF red sequence galaxies show morphological hints of recent galaxy mergers. This implies that internal processes (e.g., stellar mass-loss or hot gas cooling) for the supply of cold gas to early-type galaxies may play a significant role in the residual star formation of early-type galaxies at a recent epoch.

Squat reinforced concrete walls require enough shear strength in order to promote flexural yielding, which creates the need for designers of an accurate method for strength prediction. In many cases, especially for existing buildings, strength estimates might be insufficient when more accurate analyses are needed, such as pushover analysis. In this case, estimates of load versus displacement are required for building modeling. A model is developed that predicts the shear load versus shear deformation of squat reinforced concrete walls by means of a panel formulation. In order to provide a simple, design-oriented tool, the formulation considers the wall as a single element, which presents an average strain and stress field for the entire wall. Simple material constitutive laws for concrete and steel are used. The developed models can be divided into two categories: (i) rotating-angle and (ii) fixed-angle models. In the first case, the principal stress/strain direction rotates for each drift increment. This situation is addressed by prescribing the average normal strain of the panel. The formation of a crack, which can be interpreted as a fixed principal strain direction is imposed on the second formulation via calibration of the principal stress/strain direction obtained from the rotating-angle model at a cracking stage. Two alternatives are selected for the cracking point: fcr and 0.5fcr (post-peak). In terms of shear capacity, the model results are compared with an experimental database indicating that the fixed-angle models yield good results. The overall response (load-displacement) is also reasonable well predicted for specimens with diagonal compression failure.

칠레 작가 호세 도노소의 소설 『시골 저택』은 불확실하고 모호한 작품이다. 한편으로는 정치적 알레고리라는 성격을 지니고 있으며, 다른 한편으로는 메타픽션이라는 성격을 지니고 있기 때문이다. 일차적으로 『시골 저택』은 1973년 피노체트의 군부 쿠데타에 대한 알레고리로 읽을 수 있다. 그러나 이런 읽기는 작품을 지나치게 단순하게 이해하는 것이다. 실제로는 칠레 현대사를 넘어서 중남미 역사에서 일어난 변혁과 좌절의 연대기에 대한 문학적 초상화이다. 메타픽션으로서 『시골 저택』은 이런 문학적 초상화의 담론적 성격을 드러내고, 작품 바깥에 엄연히 존재하는 현실을 환기하고자 한다. 이로써 도노소는 암울한 현실의 비일상적인 성격, 한시적인 성격, 허구적인 성격을 드러내고자 한다.

This paper describes the use of a discrete mathematical model to represent the basic mechanisms of regulation of the bacteria E. coli in batch fermentation. The specific phenomena studied were the changes in metabolism and genetic regulation when the bacteria use three different carbon substrates (glucose, glycerol, and acetate). The model correctly predicts the behavior of E. coli vis-a-vis substrate mixtures. In a mixture of glucose, glycerol, and acetate, it prefers glucose, then glycerol, and finally acetate. The model included 67 nodes; 28 were genes, 20 enzymes, and 19 regulators/biochemical compounds. The model represents both the genetic regulation and metabolic networks in an integrated form, which is how they function biologically. This is one of the first attempts to include both of these networks in one model. Previously, discrete mathematical models were used only to describe genetic regulation networks. The study of the network dynamics generated 8 $(2^3)$ fixed points, one for each nutrient configuration (substrate mixture) in the medium. The fixed points of the discrete model reflect the phenotypes described. Gene expression and the patterns of the metabolic fluxes generated are described accurately. The activation of the gene regulation network depends basically on the presence of glucose and glycerol. The model predicts the behavior when mixed carbon sources are utilized as well as when there is no carbon source present. Fictitious jokers (Joker1, Joker2, and Repressor SdhC) had to be created to control 12 genes whose regulation mechanism is unknown, since glycerol and glucose do not act directly on the genes. The approach presented in this paper is particularly useful to investigate potential unknown gene regulation mechanisms; such a novel approach can also be used to describe other gene regulation situations such as the comparison between non-recombinant and recombinant yeast strain, producing recombinant proteins, presently under investigation in our group.

위상흔들림이 있는 펀스신호의 전력 스펙트럼을 구하였다. 여기서 pulse sequence는 통계적으로 independent stationary이며 위상흔들림은 stationary Gaussian의 확률특성을 갖는 것으로 가정되었다. Unipolar pulse 신호에 있어서, 위상흔들림이 증가할 때에 전력 스펙트럼의 discrete 부분은 감소하지만 continuous 부분은 증가하는 것으로 나타났다.

We disprove a conjecture of Bombieri regarding univalent functions in the unit disk in some previously unknown cases. The key step in the argument is showing that the global minimum of the real function (n sin x - sin(nx))/(m sin x - sin(mx)) is attained at x = 0 for integers m > $n{\geq}2$ when m is odd and n is even, m is sufficiently big and $0.5{\leq}n/m{\leq}0.8194$.

Purpose: To determine the utility of secondary circulating prostate cells for predicting early biochemical failure after radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer and compare the results with the Walz nomagram. Materials and Methods: A single centre, prospective study of men with prostate cancer treated with radical prostatectomy between 2004 and 2014 was conducted, with registration of clinical-pathological details, total serum PSA pre-surgery, Gleason score, extracapsular extension, positive surgical margins, infiltration of lymph nodes, seminal vesicles and pathological stage. Secondary circulating prostate cells were obtained using differential gel centrifugation and assessed using standard immunocytochemistry with anti-PSA. Biochemical failure was defined as a PSA >0.2ng/ml, predictive values werecalculated using the Walz nomagram and CPC detection. Results: A total of 326 men participated, with a median follow up of 5 years; 64 had biochemical failure within two years. Extracapsular extension, positive surgical margins, pathological stage, Gleason score ${\geq}8$, infiltration of seminal vesicles and lymph nodes were all associated with higher risk of biochemical failure. The discriminative value for the nomogram and circulating prostate cells was high (AUC >0.80), predictive values were higher for circulating prostate cell detection, with a negative predictive value of 99%, sensitivity of 96% and specificity of 75%. Conclusions: The nomagram had good predictive power to identify men with a high risk of biochemical failure within two years. The presence of circulating prostate cells had the same predictive power, with a higher sensitivity and negative predictive value. The presence of secondary circulating prostate cells identifies a group of men with a high risk of early biochemical failure. Those negative for secondary CPCs have a very low risk of early biochemical failure.
