It has been well known that pool boiling CHF in nanofluids compared to pure water significantly increase due to the deposition of nanoparticles on heater surface. This study concerns the characteristics of the nanoparticle deposition layer and its influence on CHF. Pool boiling experiments were carried out with 0.01vol.% water-$TiO_2$ nanofluids to obtain various nanoparticle-deposited heaters. CHF on the prepared heaters was measured during pool boiling in pure water. The heater surfaces were visualized using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and also characterized using contact angle and capillarity. The results showed that the CHF enhancement in nanofluids was completely dependent upon the structural and physicochemical characteristics of the nanoparticle deposition layer.
CHF characteristics of nano- fluids were investigated with different volumetric concentrations of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles. Pool boiling experiments indicated that the application of nano-fluids, instead of pure water, as a cooling liquid significantly increased the CHF. SEM (scanning electron microscope) observations subsequent to the pool boiling experiments revealed that nanoparticles were coated on the heating surface during pool boiling of nano-fluids. In order to investigate the roles of nanoparticles in CHF enhancement ofb nano-fluids, pool boiling experiments were performed using (a) a nanoparticle-coated heater, prepared by pool boiling of nano-fluids, immersed in pure water and (b) a nanoparticle-coated heater immersed in nano-fluids. The results demonstrated two different roles of nanoparticles in CHF enhancement using nano-fluids: the effect of nanoparticles coated on the heater surface and the effect of nanoparticles suspended in nano- fluids.

An experimental study was made to elucidate critical heat flux(CHF) characteristics in a two-phase concentric-tube thermosyphon. The experiment was performed by using saturated water, over the experimental range of configuration: inner diameter of heated outer tube D=12mm, outer diameter of unheated inner tube do=3 to 10mm and heated tube length L=100 to 1000mm. The experiment shows that the CHF is enhanced with increase in the inner tube diameter, and that the CHF decreases beyond a certain diameter of the inner tube. There is an optimum diameter for inner tube that maximizes the CHF, for each tube length and test liquid. The CHF maximum is about two to eight times as large as that without an inner tube. For a large inner tube, the CHF characteristics is similar to that for natural convective boiling in a vertical annular tube.

Flow oscillations in boiling channels induces a drastic reduction of the (critical heat flux) CHF or premature burnout. However, most of CHF works and correlations have been focused on stable flow conditions without considering flow oscillation. Therefore to improve the understanding on flow oscillation CHF, in this paper a new CHF correction factor to predict the CHF values under flow oscillation conditions has been developed from 126 experimental data. Also to investigate the dominant factor on flow oscillation CHF parametric trends are analyzed by using the developed correction factor. The overall mean accuracy ratio of the developed correction factor is 1.033 with a standard deviation of 0.195. The RMS errors 0.198. Its assessment shows that the predictions agree well with the experimental data within 25% error bounds.

Pool boiling critical heat flux (CHF) of nanofluids with oxide nanoparticles of $TiO_2$ or $Al_2O_3$ was experimentally investigated under atmospheric pressure. The results showed that a dispersion of oxide nanoparticles significantly enhances the CHF over that of pure water. Moreover it was found that nanoparticles were seriously deposited on the heater surface during pool boiling of nanofluids. CHF of pure water on a nanoparticle-deposited surface, which is produced during the boiling of nanofluids, was not less than that of nanofluids. The result reveals that the CHF enhancement of nanofluids is absolutely attributed to modification of the heater surface by the nanoparticle deposition. Then, the nanoparticle-deposited surface was characterized with parameters closely related to pool boiling CHF, such as surface roughness, contact angle, and capillary wicking. Finally, reason of the CHF enhancement of nanofluids is discussed based on the changes of the parameters.

Pool boiling critical heat flux (CHF) have been investigated using plate type test sections with different widths (3 cm & 4 cm) and lengths (10 cm, IS cm & 20 cm) under various incli- nation angles. As the inclination angle increases from $0^{\circ}$ (horizontally facing downward plate) to $30^{\circ}$, CHF sharply increases. After that angle, CHF gradually increases with the increase of the inclination angle. There must be a transition angle between $0^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$, at which the CHF increase rate remarkably changes. According to the comparison of present and previous ex- periments, the transition angle may be affected by heater size and increase with the increase of heater size. The size effect of heated surface on CHF is noticeable in the L15 & L20 series and W4 series; however, it seems to be difficult to find the size effect in L10 series and W3 series.

After etching Al-Cu alloy films using $SiCl_4/Cl_2/He/CHF_3$ plasma, a corrosion phenomenon on the metal surface has been studied with XPS(X-ray pheotoelectron spectroscopy) and SEM (Scanning electron microscopy). In Al-Cu alloy system, the corrosion occurs rapidly on the etched surface by residual chlorine atoms. To prevent the corrosion, $CHF_3$ plasma treatment subsequent to the etch has been carried put. A passivation layer is formed by fluorine-related compounds on the etched Al-Cu surface after $CHF_3$ treatment, and the layer suppresses effectively the corrosion on the surface as the $CHF_3$treatment in the pressure of 300m Torr.
The critical heat flux (CHF) levels that occurred due to exponential heat inputs for varying periods to a 1.0-mm diameter horizontal cylinder immersed in various liquids were measured to develop an extended database on the effect of high subcoolings for quasi-steady-state and transient maximum heat fluxes. Two main mechanisms of CHF were found. One mechanism is due to the time lag of the hydrodynamic instability (HI) which starts at steady-state CHF upon fully developed nucleate boiling, and the other mechanism is due to the explosive process of heterogeneous spontaneous nucleation (HSN) which occurs at a certain HSN superheat in originally flooded cavities on the cylinder surface. Steady-state CHFs were divided into three regions for lower, intermediate and higher subcooling at pressures resulting from HI, transition and HSN, respectively. HSN consistently occurred in the transient boiling CHF conditions that correspond to a short period. It was also found that the transient boiling CHFs gradually increased, then rapidly decreased and finally increased again as the period became shorter.
In-Vessel Retention (IVR) is a key technology to retain the molten core in the reactor vessel during severe accidents of Pressurized-water reactors (PWRs). In order to gain the safety margin of IVR, it is crucial to enhance the critical heat flux (CHF) of the reactor vessel, which is submerged in a water pool. To enhance the CHF, we have designed and additive-manufactured porous grid plates with a 3-D printer for design flexibility. We measured the CHF for the porous grid plate on the boiling heat transfer surface and found that the CHF was enhanced by 50 % more than that of the bare surface. The CHF enhanced more with a narrower grid pitch and a lower grid height. The visual observation study revealed that the vapor film was formed at the bottom of the grid plate.
Atrial fibrillation (AF) and Congestive heart failure (CHF) are increasingly widespread, costly, deadly diseases and are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. In this study, we analyzed three statistical methods for automatic detection of AF and CHF based on the randomness, variability and complexity of the heart beat interval, which is RRI time series. Specifically, we used short RRI time series with 16 beats and employed the normalized root mean square of successive RR differences (RMSSD), the sample entropy and the Shannon entropy. The detection performance was analyzed using four large well documented databases, namely the MIT-BIH Atrial fibrillation (n=23), the MIT-BIH Normal Sinus Rhythm (n=18), the BIDMC Congestive Heart Failure (n=13) and the Congestive Heart Failure RRI databases (n=25). Using thresholds by Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves, we found that the normalized RMSSD provided the highest accuracy. The overall sensitivity, specificity and accuracy for AF and CHF were 0.8649, 0.9331 and 0.9104, respectively. Regarding CHF detection, the detection rate of CHF (NYHA III-IV) was 0.9113 while CHF (NYHA I-II) was 0.7312, which shows that the detection rate of CHF with higher severity is higher than that of CHF with lower severity. For the clinical 24 hour data (n=42), the overall sensitivity, specificity and accuracy for AF and CHF were 0.8809, 0.9406 and 0.9108, respectively, using normalized RMSSD.
