Top-down construction is a construction technique in which pit excavation and structure construction are conducted simultaneously. Reducing construction time and minimizing noise and vibration which affect neighboring structures, the technique is widely employed in constructing downtown structures. While H-steel columns have been commonly used as core columns, concrete filled steel tube (CFT) columns are at the center of attention because the latter have less axial directionality and greater cross-sectional efficiency than the former. When compared with circular CFT columns, square CFT columns are more easily connected to the floor structure and the area of percussion rotary drilling (PRD) is smaller. For this reason, square CFT columns are used as core columns of concrete encased and filled square (CET) columns in underground floors. However, studies on the structural behavior and concrete stress transfer of CET columns have not been conducted. Since concrete is cast according to construction sequence, checking the stress of concrete inside the core columns and the stress of covering concrete is essential. This paper presents the results of structural tests and analyses conducted to evaluate the usability and safety of CET columns in top-down construction where CFT columns are used as core columns. Parameters in the tests are loading condition, concrete strength and covering depth. The compressive load capacity and failure behavior of specimens are evaluated. In addition, 2 cases of field application of CET columns in underground floors are analyzed.
This paper presents a probabilistic investigation of American and European specifications (i.e., AISC and Eurocode 4) for square concrete-filled steel tubular (CFT) stub columns. The study is based on experimental results of 100 axially loaded square CFT stub columns from the literature. By comparing experimental results for ultimate loads with code-predicted column resistances, the uncertainty of resistance models is analyzed and it is found that the modeling uncertainty parameter can be described using random variables of lognormal distribution. Reliability analyses were then performed with/without considering the modeling uncertainty parameter and the safety level of the specifications is evaluated in terms of sufficient and uniform reliability criteria. Results show that: (1) The AISC design code provided slightly conservative results of square CFT stub columns with reliability indices larger than 3.25 and the uniformness of reliability indices is no better because of the quality of the resistance model; (2) The uniformness of reliability indices for the Eurocode 4 was better than that of AISC, but the reliability indices of columns designed following the Eurocode 4 were found to be quite below the target reliability level of Eurocode 4.
The existing CFT columns present the deterioration in confining effect after the yield of steel tube, local buckling and the deterioration in load capacity. If lateral load such as earthquake load is applied to CFT columns, strong shearing force and moment are generated at the lower part of the columns and local buckling appears at the column. In this study, axial compression test and beam-column test were conducted for existing CFT square column specimens and those reinforced with carbon fiber sheets (CFS). The variables for axial compression test were width-thickness ratio and the number of CFS layers and those for beamcolumn test were concrete strength and the number of CFS layers. The results of the compression test showed that local buckling was delayed and maximum load capacity improved slightly as the number of layers increased. The specimens' ductility capacity improved due to the additional confinement by carbon fiber sheets which delayed local buckling. In the beam-column test, maximum load capacity improved slightly as the number of CFS layers increased. However, ductility capacity improved greatly as the increased number of CFS layers delayed the local buckling at the lower part of the columns. It was observed that the CFT structure reinforced with carbon fiber sheets controlled the local buckling at columns and thus improved seismic performance. Consequently, it was deduced that the confinement of CFT columns by carbon fiber sheets suggested in this study would be widely used for reinforcing CFT columns.
Recently, CFT Column has reported a lot of study result, because a CFT column has certain superior structural properties as well as good productivity, execution efficiency, and improved rigidity over existing column. However, CFT column still has problems clearing the capacity evaluation between its steel tube member and high-strength concrete materials. Also, high-strength concrete filled steel square tube column(HCFT) examined numerical value explanatorily about transformation performance(M-ø) of when short-column receives equal flexure-moment from axial stress on research for concrete. hnd, with basis assumption, executed development of analysis program of moment-curvature relation for analytic analysis of transformation performance of HCFT section that get by an experiment. This study investigated to properties of structural(capacity, curvature), through a series of experiments for HCFT with key parameters, such as strength of concrete(600kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$), D/t ratio, slenderness ratio(λ) and concrete kinds under eccentric load. And, I executed comparative analysis with AISC-LRFD, AIJ and Takanori Sato etc. and experiment result that is capacity design formula.
In this study, fire resistance tests were conducted to evaluate the fire resistance performance of unprotected and non-welded CFT columns in relation to the shape and size of cross-sections. Unprotected slot-type CFT columns which were ${\square}300$ and ${\square}500$ in dimensions resisted fire for 125 minutes and more than 180 minutes, respectively. Strain analysis showed that slot-type CFT columns were more ductile than welded CFT columns. The temperatures of central parts measured when welded CFT columns and slot-type CFT columns had lost fire resistance performance were higher in the former than the latter. Therefore, slot connection does not a great influence on the temperatures inside the concrete.
This paper presents experimental and analytical studies on long-term behavior of square CFT columns with diaphragm. In order to investigate the effect of the diaphragm on the long~term behavior, experiments for six specimens with two diaphragms and three different column length, and three-dimensional finite element analysis for each specimen have been performed. The finite element models considering the interface behavior between the steel tube and the inner concrete were verified from comparison of the test results with the analysis results. From the test and the analysis results, the following conclusions were obtained. The confinement effect created by the diaphragm does not depends on column length and influences only a part of the whole column that is from the end to the depth which is the same to the width of the column. The shortening of the column with diaphragm which covers more than a half of the cross sectional area of the inner concrete is the same as that of the column under a load applied on the steel tube and the entire section of the inner concrete.

The concrete inside the steel tube of CFT columns enables them to have great strength and ductility. CFT columns are also excellent in fire-resistance because explosive heat upon a fire can be contained in the tube by the concrete debris. However, the studies to evaluate the residual strength of CFT columns after a fire have not been conducted enough. The studies to evaluate the residual strength of CFT columns after a fire are indispensable because it is the barometer of the damage of composite columns caused by a fire and the degree of repair and reinforcement work for the columns after a fire. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the deterioration of load capacity and structural behavior of square CFT columns with the same shapes and boundary conditions before and after a fire. The study also evaluates the influential factors of the CFT columns reinforced to secure the residual strength after a fire.
Recently, CFT column has been well-studied and reported on, because a CFT column has certain superior structural properties as well as good productivity, execution efficiency, and improved rigidity over existing columns. However, CFT column still has problems clearing the capacity evaluation between its steel tube member and high-strength concrete materials. Also, research on concrete has examined numerical values for high-strength concrete filled steel square tube columns (HCFT) to explain transformation performance (M-${\phi}$) when a short-column receives equal flexure-moment from axial stress. Moment-curvature formulas are proposed for HCFT columns based on analytic assumption described in this paper. This study investigated structural properties (capacity, curvature), through a series of experiments for HCFT with key parameters, such as strength of concrete mixed design (58.8 MPa), width-thickness ratio (D/t), buckling length to sectional width ratio (Lk/D) and concrete types (Zeolite, Fly-ash, Silica-fume) under eccentric loads. A comparative analysis executed for the AISC-LRFD, AIJ and Takanori Sato, etc. Design formulas to estimate the axial load (N)-moment (M)-curvature (${\phi}$) are proposed for HCFT columns based on tests results described in this paper.
The connection with combined cross diaphragm is developed for the connection of square CFT column and steel beam and proposed to be used for the frame with asymmetric span length. The structural characteristics of this connection lie in the penetration of the beam flange in the direction of major axis through the column for the smooth flow of stress. The purpose of this study is to analyze the dynamic behavior and stress flow of suggested connection and to evaluate the resistance to shock of connection. Four T-type CFT column-to-beam specimens; two with combined cross diaphragm and the others with interior and through diaphragms, the existing connection types, were made for cyclic load test guided by the load program of ANSI/AISC SSPEC 2002. The results show that the proposed connection is more efficient than existing ones in terms of strength, stress flow and energy absorption and satisfies the seismic performance required in the region of weak/moderate earthquakes.

A concrete filled square steel tube (CFT) is composed of the external steel material, which its strength is reduced in fire due to sudden temperature increase, and the internal concrete with high thermal capacity that can ensure the fire resistance performance of the structure. Therefore, research about the influence factors of the structural performance of CFT column is required in order to apply CFT column to a fire resisting structure, and additional research about influence for each condition is also necessary. Among the influence factors, the boundary condition between column and beam is important structurally, and it is one of the major factors that determine overall fire resisting performance. This study performed a fire experiment under loading in order to analyse the influences of CFT column to the boundary condition. As the results of the experiment, fire resistance time of 106 minutes was ensured for the clamped-end condition but 89 minutes for the hinge-end condition in case of the 360 cross section. And, fire resistance time of 113 minutes was ensured for the clamped-end condition but 78 minutes for the hinge-end condition in case of the 280 cross section.
