  • In this study, the inhomogeneous material composed of CFRP(carbon fiber reinforced plastic) and structural metal of SM45C is used for the light material. The finite element analysis on the basis of compact tension test was carried out by using the composite material for sandwich type bonded with the unidirectional CFRP that differs in fiber stacking angle at both sides with the core of SM 45C. CT test is the representative method to confirm the fracture behaviour due to crack in material under the load. The effect on crack and hole must be investigated in order to apply inhomogeneous material to mechanical structure. As the result of this study, the fracture behaviour by CT test of the composite material for sandwich was studied by simulation analysis. The sandwich composite of unidirectional CFRP with the stacking angle of [0/60/-60/0] has the superior strength and the maximum equivalent stress of about 182GPa.Also, the esthetic sense can be shown as the designed factor of shape with composite material is grafted onto the convergence technique.

  • In this research, to develope the A1 7075/CFRP multilayered hybrid composites, CRALL(Carbon Reinforced aluminum lamiate) specimens were processed by autoclavecuring system that curing temperature, time, surface pretreatment condition of aluminum were constant. Andthe fatigye life and failure mechanism on CFRP volume fraction and fiber orientation of CRALLspecimens were investigated. A fatigue life was greatly influenced by effect of CFRP fiber volume fraction but it was less effected than those of fiber orientation. The fatigue failure arised from interface delamination of CFRP and aluminum sheet after shear fracture of aluminum layer. The failure mechanism is assumed that the aluminum laminates which divide the CFRP into many thim layers tend to arrest the failure propagation.

  • This paper describes the results of experiments to analyze the free vibration of the laminated composite and hybrid composite plates with various shapes and boundary conditions. The materials of specimens were the carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), the glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP), the GFRP-Aluminum hybrid composite and the CFRP-CFRP hybrid composite. The natural frequencies and nodal patterns of plates with various shapes were experimentally obtained by impact exciting test using an impact hammer and an accelerometer. The experimental results were presented with normalized frequency parameters. The effects of composite material properties, fiber orientation angles, various geometrical shapes and boundary conditions on the vibration characteristics of composite plates were evaluated. To compare and verify these experimental results, the finite element analysis was carried out, and was well agreed with experimental results.

  • Recently, CFRP composite is more and more used in the various fields because of a higher specific modulus, chemical property and so on. Most products using CFRP composite are manufactured by construction of components. Various components are joined with those by bolts and pins. Holes for bolts and pins decrease strength and fatigue life of components, because those act as notch in structures. In this paper, we experimentally evaluated the fatigue life of hole-notched and unnotched weave CFRP plate. Then, we compared the two results and proposed an equation for prediction of fatigue life.

  • When compared to other composite materials such as FRP and MMC, hybrid composite material is more attractive one due to the high specific strength and the resistance to fatigue. However, the fracture mechanism of hybrid composite material is extremely complicated because of the bonding structure of metals and FRP. Recently, nondestructive technique has been used to evaluate the fracture mechanism of these composite materials. In this study. AE technique has been used to clarify the fracture mechanism and the degree of damage for Al 7075/CFRP hybrid composite material. It was found that AE event, energy and amplitude among AE parameters were effective to evaluate fracture process of Al 7075/CFRP composite material. In addition, the relationship between the AE signal and the characteristics of failure surface using optical microscope was discussed.

  • This paper deals with the structural analysis of wind turbine blades considering the bi-modulus property of CFRP, known as a more economic and efficient material for very large blades. The bi-modulus property is an unique characteristic of CFRP that shows higher tensile modulus than compressive modulus. Due to this characteristic, it is needed to apply the bi-modulus property to the computational analysis of CFRP blades to achieve more accurate results. In this paper, a novel method is proposed to apply the bi-modulus property of CFRP in a numerical simulation. To demonstrate the bi-modulus effect in FE analysis, the actual bi-modulus of CFRP was measured and applied to the structural analysis of a wind turbine blade. Moreover, the effects of the proposed method were evaluated by comparing the analysis results with actual full-scale blade static test results. As a result, it was verified that the proposed method could appropriately simulate the bi-modulus during FE analysis. Moreover, the accuracy of blade structural analysis was improved in accordance with the application of the bi-modulus property.

  • Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites consist of carbon fibers in a polymer matrix. Recently, CFRP composites having high thermal stability and low outgassing are finding their use in high performance materials for aerospace and electronics applications under high temperature and high vacuum conditions. Cyanate ester resin is one of the most suitable matrix resins for this purpose. In this study, proper combination of cyanate ester and catalyst, curing behavior, and cure cycle were determined by chemorheology. Optimum condition was found to be catalyst content of 100 ppm and curing temperature of $150^{\circ}C$. Thermal stability and outgassing of cured resin composition were analyzed and the results showed thermal decomposition temperature of $385^{\circ}C$ and total mass loss of 0.29%. The CFRP prepregs and subsequent composites were fabricated by predetermined resin composition and the cure condition. Tensile moduli of the composites were compared with theoretical models and the results were very consistent.

  • Carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites are increasingly being used in a variety of industry applications, such as aircraft, automobiles, and ships because of their high specific stiffness and high specific strength. Aircraft are exposed to high temperatures and high humidity for a long duration during flights. CFRP materials of the aircraft can absorb water, which could decrease the adhesion strength of these materials and cause their volumes to change with variation in internal stress. Therefore, it is necessary to estimate the characteristics of CFRP composites under actual conditions from the viewpoint of aircraft safety. In this study air-coupled ultrasonic testing (ACUT) was applied to the evaluation of water absorption properties of CFRP composites. CFRP specimens were fabricated and immersed in distilled water at $75^{\circ}C$ for 30, 60, and 120 days, after which their ultrasonic images were obtained by ACUT. The water absorption properties were determined by quantitatively analyzing the changes in ultrasonic signals. Further, shear strength was applied to the specimens to verify the changes in their mechanical properties for water absorption.

  • Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) has strong and superb material properties, especially in mechanical and heat-resisting aspects, but the drawback is its high price. In this study, we made a hybrid composite using carbon fiber and basalt fiber, which is expected to attribute to its strong material properties and its financial benefits. We found out that the higher the content of basalt fiber included, the lower the intensity, and carbon's intensity contents of 80% showed the similar intensity level as that of CFRP. Besides it was possible to get a better mechanical properties using the composite that included the mixed fiber, instead of using a composition of separate fibers filed.
