The current study investigates the seismic performance of shear-dominant RC columns retrofitted with iron-based shape memory alloy (Fe SMA). Three RC columns with insufficient transverse reinforcement were designed and fabricated for lateral cyclic loading tests. Before testing, two specimens were externally confined with carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets and self-prestressed Fe SMA strips. The test results showed that both CFRP and Fe SMA performed well in preventing severe shear failure exhibited by the unretrofitted control specimen. Furthermore, the two retrofitted specimens showed ductile flexural responses up to the drift ratios of ±8%. In terms of damage control, however, the Fe SMA confinement was superior to CFRP confinement in that the spalling of concrete was much less and that the rupture of confinement did not occur.

Wooden structures are widely used, particularly in earthquake zones, owing to their light weight, ease of application, and resistance to the external environment. In this study, we aimed to improve the mechanical properties of laminated timber beams using novel hybrid systems [carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) and wire rope]. Within the scope of this study, it is expected that using wood, which is an environmentally friendly and sustainable building element, will be more economical and safe than the reinforced concrete and steel elements currently used to pass through wide openings. The structural behavior of the hybrid-reinforced laminated timber beams was determined under the loading system. The experimental findings showed that the highest increase in the values of laminated beams reinforced with steel ropes was obtained with the 2N reinforcement, with a maximum load of 38 kN and a displacement of 137 mm. Thus, a load increase of 168% and displacement increase of 275% compared with the reference sample were obtained. Compared with the reference sample, a load increase of 92% and a displacement increase of 14% were obtained. Carbon fabrics placed between the layers with fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) prevented crack development and provided significant interlayer connections. Consequently, the fabrics placed between the laminated wooden beams with the innovative reinforcement system will not disrupt the aesthetics or reduce the effect of earthquake forces, and significant reductions can be achieved in these sections.
This paper presents a numerical study on structural behavior of hammer head pier cap beams, extended on verges and reinforced with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) plates. A 3-D finite element (FE) model along with a simplified analytical model are presented. Concrete damage plasticity (CDP) was adapted in the FE model and an analytical approach predicting the CFRP anchor strength was adapted in both FE and analytical model. Total five quarter-scaled pier cap beams with various CFRP reinforcing schemes were experimentally tested and analyzed with numerical approaches. Comparison between experimental results, FE results, analytical results and current ACI guideline predictions was presented. The FE results showed good agreement with experimental results in terms of failure mode, ultimate capacity, load-displacement response and strain distribution. In addition, the proposed strut-and-tie based analytical model provides the most accurate prediction of ultimate strength of extended cap beams among the three numerical approaches.
This paper presents the failure mode and strengthening design of reinforced concrete slab strengthened with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer(CFRP) grid. Parameters involved in this experimental study are FRP grid reinforcement quantity, repair mortar thickness, the presence of anchor, and strengthening in compression. In this study, there are different failure types with increasing the CFRP grid strengthening reinforcement. On the low strengthening level, CFRP grid in repair mortar cover ruptures. On the moderate strengthening level, there is a debonding shear failure in the interface of carbon FRP grid because of the excessive shear deformation. On the high strengthening level, diagonal shear failure occurs. With the increasing of FRP grid reinforcement, the strengthening effect increased, but the ductility decreased. By limiting the strengthening level, it can be achieved to prevent shear failure which result in sudden loss in the resisting load capacity. CFRP rupture failure is desirable, because CFRP ruptured concrete slab keeps the same load capacity and ductility haying before strengthening even after failure. Finally, design guideline and procedure are given for strengthening of concrete slab with CFRP grid.

In this study, the effects of sulphuric acid on the mechanical performance and the durability of Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) specimens were investigated. The carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) and basalt fiber reinforced polymer (BFRP) fabrics were used to evaluate the performances of the confined and unconfined ECC specimens under static and cyclic loading in the acidic environment. In addition, the use of CFRP and BFRP fabrics as a rehabilitation technique was also studied for the specimens exposed to the sulphuric acid environment. The polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber with a fraction of 2% was used in the research. Two different PVA-ECC concretes were produced using low lime fly ash (LCFA) and high lime fly ash (HCFA) with the fly ash-to-OPC ratio of 1.2. Unwrapped PVA-ECC specimens were also produced as a reference concrete and all concrete specimens were continuously immersed in 5% sulphuric acid solution ($H_2SO_4$). The mechanical performance and the durability of specimens were evaluated by means of the visual inspection, weight change, static and cyclic loading, and failure mode. In addition, microscopic changes of the PVA-ECC specimens due to sulphuric acid attack were also assessed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to understand the macroscale behavior of the specimens. Results indicated that PVA-ECC specimens produced with low lime fly ash (LCFA) showed superior performance than the specimens produced with high lime fly ash (HCFA) in the acidic environment. In addition, confinement of ECC specimens with BFRP and CFRP fabrics significantly improved compressive strength, ductility, and durability of the specimens. PVA-ECC specimens wrapped with carbon FRP fabric showed better mechanical performance and durability properties than the specimens wrapped with basalt FRP fabric. Both FRP materials can be used as a rehabilitation material in the acidic environment.
Lightweight hydrant tanks increase the amount of water that can be carried by fire trucks, resulting in longer water spray times during the initial firefighting process, which can minimize human and property damages. In this study, the applicability of carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites as a material for lightweight hydrant tanks was investigated. In particular, the resin for manufacturing CFRP hydrant tanks must meet various requirements, such as excellent mechanical properties, formability, and dimensional stability. In order to identify a resin that satisfies these conditions, five commercially available resins, including epoxy(KFR-120V), unsaturated polyesters(G-650, HG-3689BT, LSP8020), vinyl ester(KRF-1031) were selected as candidates, and their characteristics were analyzed to investigate the suitability for manufacturing a CFRP hydrant tank. Based on the analyses, KRF-1031 exhibited the most suitable properties for hydrant tanks. Particularly, CFRP with KRF-1031 exhibited successful results for thermal stability and elution tests.
Many existing concrete structures suffer from low quality of concrete and inadequate confinement reinforcement. These deficiencies cause low strength and ductility. Wrapping concrete by carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite sheets enhances compressive strength and deformability. In this study, the effects of the thickness of the CFRP composite wraps on the behavior of concrete are investigated experimentally. Both monotonic and repeated compressive loads are considered during the tests, which are carried out on strengthened undamaged specimens, as well as the specimens, which were tested and damaged priorly and strengthened after repairing. The experimental data shows that, external confinement of concrete by CFRP composite sheets improves both compressive strength and deformability of concrete significantly as a function of the thickness of the CFRP composite wraps around concrete. Empirical equations are also proposed for compressive strength and ultimate axial deformation of FRP composite wrapped concrete. Test results available in the literature, as well as the experimental results presented in this paper, are compared with the analytical results predicted by the proposed equations.

Carbon fiber reinforced polymer(CFRP) strips have superior mechanical and chemical properties in comparison with conventional materials. The purpose of this study is to investigate the mechanical shear behavior of concrete structures strengthened by CFRP strips A total of 15 concrete members were made and tested. Shear span to depth ratio(a/d) and the spacing of CFRP stripswere selected as major test variables. From test results, it isshown that shear strengthening with CFRP strips can increase the first shear strength and ultimate shear strength of concrete members significantly. And the brittle shear failure mode can be changed to a ductile failure mode by CFRP strips.

This paper suggests a modified bond reduction coefficient considering the average CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) strain concept for the unbonded prestressed CFRP plate strengthening system. The strengthened length and the pure bending length were seen to influence the variation of the strain of unbonded CFRP plate. Therefore, a new bond reduction coefficient considering such effect was suggested. Comparison with the experimental data revealed that the analytic results obtained by considering the proposed bond reduction coefficient were effective in estimating the strain of the unbonded CFRP plate in the CFRP plate prestressing system.

This paper presents a series of test result in order to study fire resistance capacity of the Near-Surface-Mounted (NSM) Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) plate, which are tensile test of CFRP under various temperature loading, temperature loading test of epoxy and bond test of NSM CFRP to concrete under various temperature loading. From the tests, it was found that NSM retrofit method had high efficiency in strengthening concrete under ordinary temperature. However, the strength of the system was able to be drastically decreased even a little increase of surrounding temperature. Especially, bond capacity begins to disappear when the surrounding temperature approaches the glass transition temperature of epoxy. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the fire resistance capacity of both fiber reinforced polymer reinforcement and epoxy for bonding in order to develop safe fire resistance design of structure.
