Comparison of CFD simulations with experimental data for a tanker model advancing in waves

  • In this paper, CFD simulation results for a tanker model are compared with experimental data over a range of wave conditions to verify a capability to predict the sea-keeping performance of practical hull forms. CFD simulations are conducted using WISDAM-X code which is capable of unsteady RANS calculations in arbitrary wave conditions. Comparisons are made of unsteady surface pressures, added resistance and ship motions in regular waves for cases of fully-loaded and ballast conditions of a large tanker model. It is shown that the simulation results agree fairly well with the experimental data, and that WISDAM-X code can predict sea-keeping performance of practical hull forms.

  • The present paper discusses the characteristics of unsteady aerodynamic forces on long-span curved roofs. A forced vibration test is carried out in a wind tunnel to investigate the effects of wind speed, vibration amplitude, reduced frequency of vibration and rise/span ratio of the roof on the unsteady aerodynamic forces. Because the range of parameters tested in the wind tunnel experiment is limited, a CFD simulation is also made for evaluating the characteristics of unsteady aerodynamic forces on the vibrating roof over a wider range of parameters. Special attention is paid to the effect of reduced frequency of vibration. Based on the results of the wind tunnel experiment and CFD simulation, the influence of the unsteady aerodynamic forces on the dynamic response of a full-scale long-span curved roof is investigated on the basis of the spectral analysis.

  • Fluent ver.6.3 is used as CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulator to predict the performance of snow-melting system by geothermal pipes energy. As the results of this simulation, it is clearly shown that $50^{\circ}C$ of working fluid in to geothermal evaluated as more effect comparing to $45^{\circ}C$ of working fluid. The Surface temperature is come to $5^{\circ}C$ at 1m/s speed and $50^{\circ}C$ temperature of the working fluid.

  • Unlike ordinary train, the HST(High Speed Train) is operated at a very high speed, which may cause pressure transient problems when the HST is passing through a station. In the present study, the wind pressure caused by the passing HST was measured in the Cheonan HST station and compared with the numerical simulations. For the measurement, the HST was passing through the station at speeds of 240 km/h north bound and 150 km/h south bound. MEMS based differential pressure transducers are used to measure pressure variation at various locations in the station. It is shown from the results that measured data are in good agreement with CFD simulation with moving mesh technique for the train movement. With the present validation of CFD simulation, the CFD simulation may effectively aid the design of future HST station.

  • In order to suggest the methodology for achieving anti-vortex device within multi pump intake well, CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation were conducted for two alternative suggestions. Multi-intake sump model with anti-vortex device basins were designed and the characteristics of submerged vortex were investigated in the flow field by numerical simulation. From the results of simulations, to install the horizontal plate and vertical cross plates within basins were effective for preventing air-induction vortex.

  • CFD simulation for Smart-UAV(TR-E2Sl) is performed to analyze its aerodynamic characteristics. Base geometry and several cases, decided by control surfaces being deflected, are simulated. To obtain the better lift characteristics, the elevator should be deflected between 10o and 20o with the incidence angle of the wing 1o.
