When a high-speed train passes an underground station, large pressure waves are generated due to the piston effect. These pressure waves can cause the problems of vibration and noise as well as the ear discomfort of passengers at the underground station. This work numerically analyzed the pressure wave generation and propagation in an high-speed railway underground station, and the optimal location for vent shafts was studied to improve the passenger comfort by reducing the magnitude of the pressure wave and its rate of change. The evolution of pressure field in the underground station was calculated using a CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) software(Fluent), where the axis-symmetric two-dimensional model verified by Wu was used. And this study is applied to modelling of the underground station and the tunnel from Daegok station A-line of GTX(Great Train Express). From the result, we can have a conclusion that the role of vent shafts respectively were different according to the position in and out the underground station. Also Vent shaft in the underground station widely reduced pressure magnitude. And vent shaft out underground station reduced initial pressure peak value. Double vent shafts installed at tunnel toward station entrance and inside of the tunnel are the most efficient to reduce pressure. and pressure reduction increases according to the number of vent shaft.
Jeollabuk-do has announced a future plan for the Saemangeum Wind Farm which includes the installation of fourteen wind turbines in a single line, located 500m back from the Saemangeum Seawall. It is anticipated as a positive effect that, for sea breeze blowing toward land, the average wind speed could be accelerated and the wind speed distribution could be uniformized by dint of the seawall, an upstream structure of the turbines. At the same time it is also anticipated as a negative effect that the strength of wind turbulence could be increased due to the flow separation generated at the back end of the seawall. According to the results of the computational fluid dynamics analysis of this paper, it has been observed that, at the 50m zone on the road surface located at the uppermost part of the Saemangeum Seawall, the average wind speed has been accelerated by approximately 6~7% and that wind shear has been decreased by 70%, but this positive effect disappears in the zone situated beyond the 100m from the back end of the seawall. It has also been observed that flow separation exists to a limited extent only below the bottom of the blade-sweeping circle and, furthermore, does not extend very far downstream of the wind. As a conclusion, it can be said that the seawall neither positively nor negatively affects the proposed Saemangeum Seawall Wind Farm layout.
The performance of small-size impellers with ruled surfaces was investigated for flank milling over a wide speed range, using computational fluid dynamics analyses and gas bench tests. An impeller with a ruled surface was designed, manufactured, and tested to evaluate the effects of blade loading, the backsweep angle, and the relative velocity distribution on the compressor performance. The simulations and tests were completed using the same compressor cover with identical inlet and outlet channels to accurately compare the performance of the abovementioned impeller with a commercial impeller containing sculptured blades. Both impellers have the same number of blades, number of splitters, and shroud meridional profiles. The backsweep angles of the blades on the ruled impeller were selected to work with the same pinched diffuser as for a sculptured impeller. The inlet-to-exit relative velocity diffusion ratio and the blade loading were provided to maximize the flow rate and to minimize the surge flow rate. The design flow rate, rpm, were selected same for both impellers. Test results showed that for the compressor stage with a ruled impeller, the efficiency was increased by 0.32% with an extended surge margin without a reduction in the pressure ratio as compared to the impeller with the sculptured design. It was concluded that an increased relative velocity diffusion coupled with a large backsweep angle was an effective way to improve the compressor stage efficiency. Additionally, an appropriate blade loading distribution was important for achieving a wide operating range and higher efficiency.

In this study, a Cartesian-grid method based on finite volume approach is applied to simulate the ship motions in large amplitude waves. Fractional step method is applied for pressure-velocity coupling and TVD limiter is used to interpolate the cell face value for the discretization of convective term. Water, air, and solid phases are identified by using the concept of volume-fraction function for each phase. In order to capture the interface between air and water, the tangent of hyperbola for interface capturing (THINC) scheme is used with weighed line interface calculation (WLIC) method which considers multidimensional information. The volume fraction of solid body embedded in the Cartesian grid system is calculated using a level-set based algorithm, and the body boundary condition is imposed by a volume weighted formula. Numerical simulations for the two-dimensional barge type model and Wigley hull in linear waves have been carried out to validate the newly developed code. To demonstrate the applicability for highly nonlinear wave-body interactions such as green water on the deck, numerical analysis on the large-amplitude motion of S175 containership is conducted and all computational results are compared with experimental data.

When an oil-spilling accident occurs at sea, it is of the primary importance to predict the amount of oil leakage for the swift response and decision-making. The simplest method of oil-leakage estimation is based on the hydrostatic pressure balance between oil inside the tank and seawater outside of leakage hole, that is the so-called Torricelli equilibrium relation. However, there exists discrepancy between the reality and the Torricelli relation, since the latter is obtained from the quasi-steady treatment of Bernoulli equation ignoring viscous friction. A preliminary experiment has been performed to find out the oil-leaking speed and shape. Soy-bean oil inside the inner tank was ejected into water of the outer tank through four different leakage holes to record the amount of oil leakage. Furthermore, a CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) method was utilized to simulate the experimental situation. The Wavier-Stokes equations were solved for two-density flow of oil and water. VOF method was employed to capture the shape of their interface. It is found that the oil-leaking speed varies due to the frictional resistance of the leakage hole passage dependent on its aspect ratio. The Torricelli factor relating the speed predicted by using the hydrostatic balance and the real leakage speed is assessed. For the present experimental setup, Torricelli factors were in the range of 35%~55% depending on the aspect ratio of leakage holes. On the other hand, CFD results predicted that Torricelli factor could be 52% regardless of the aspect ratio of the leakage holes, when the frictional resistance of leakage hole passage was neglected.

sump pump is a system that draws in water that is stored in a dam or reservoir. They are used to pump large amounts of water for cooling systems in large power plants, such as thermal and nuclear plants. However, if the flow and sump pump ratio are small, the flow rate increases around the inlet port. This causes a turbulent vortex or swirl flows. The turbulent flow reduces the performance and can cause failure. Various methods have been devised to solve the problem, but a correct solution has not been found for low water level. The most efficient solution is to install an anti-vortex device (AVD) or increase the length of the sump inlet, which makes the flow uniform. This paper presents a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of the flow characteristics in a sump pump for different sump inlet lengths and AVD types. Modeling was performed in three stages based on the pump intake, sump, and pump. For accurate analysis, the grid was made denser in the intake part, and the grid for the sump pump and AVD were also dense. 1.2-1.5 million grid elements were generated using ANSYS ICEM-CFD 14.5 with a mixture of tetra and prism elements. The analysis was done using the SST turbulence model of ANSYS CFX14.5, a commercial CFD program. The conditions were as follows: H.W.L 6.0 m, L.W.L 3.5, Qmax 4.000 kg/s, Qavg 3.500 kg/s Qmin 2.500 kg/s. The results of analysis by the vertex angle and velocity distribution are as follows. A sump pump with an Ext E-type AVD was accepted at a high water level. However, further studies are needed for a low water level using the Ext E-type AVD as a base.

The feed air to MSW incinerator influences on the residence time of combustion gas, removal of unburnt ash and exiting gas temperature. Thus the secondary air volume could present sufficient residence time which can maintain the exiting temperature over $850^{\circ}C$. The secondary air also relates directly with the turbulence in the inside of combustion chamber, which finally provide the stable combustion condition. The present study designed a modern incinerator for a field scale, and evaluation of the potential amount of primary air based on the daily combustible quantity. From the evaluated primary air volume, the secondary air flow rate could be estimated, and its dynamic behavior was verified. In addition, the obtained air volume enables to find an optimum operation condition of the combustion. As a result of the CFD simulation, the air ratio 75 : 25 between primary and secondary air amount was optimum ratio than design criteria 72 : 28. And the flow velocity ratio of front-back of secondary air jet nozzle was found excellent at 1 : 3. In addition, the result of applied to the plant, the removal efficiency of NOx and CO generation would concentration of CO.

Energy loss at manholes, often exceeding friction loss of pipes under surcharged flow, is considered as one of the major causes of inundation in urban area. Therefore, it is important to analyze the head losses at manholes, especially in case of surcharged flow. The stream characteristics were analyzed and head loss coefficients were estimated by using the computational fluid dynamics(CFD) model, FLUENT 6.3, at surcharged square manhole in this study. The CFD model was carefully assessed by comparing simulated results with the experimental ones. The study results indicate that there was good agreement between simulation model and experiment. The CFD model was proved to be capable of estimating the head loss coefficients at surcharged manholes. The head loss coefficients with variation of the ratio of manhole width(B) to inflow pipe diameter(d) and variation of the drop height at surcharged square manhole with a straight-path through were calculated using FLUENT 6.3. As the ratio of B/d increases, head loss coefficient increases. The depth and head loss coefficient at manhole were gradually increased when the drop height was more than 5cm. Therefore, the CFD model(Fluent 6.3) might be used as a tool to simulate the water depth, energy losses, and velocity distribution at surcharged square manhole.
This study attempted to simulate changes in the thermal environment according to the type of apartment complex in Korea using CFD techniques and evaluate the thermal environment by type of apartment. First, apartment complex types in the 2000s and 2010s were referred from previous studies and four types of apartment complex were extracted from. Second, the layout of the apartment complex and temperature changes were analyzed by the direction of wind inflow. Third, a standardized model was created from each type using tower type, plate type, and mixed driving. Last, CFD simulations were performed by setting up the inflow of wind from a total of eight directions. The temperature was relatively low in the type consisting of only the tower type and the type of placing the tower type in the center of the complex, regardless of the direction of the wind. It was due to the good inflow of wind from these types to the inside of the complex. It can be interpreted because wind flows easily into the complex in these types. The findings showed that wind flow and resulting temperature distribution patterns differed depending on the building type and complex layout type, confirming the need for careful consideration of the complex layout in the early design stage. The results are expected to be used as basic data for creating a sustainable residential environment in the early design stage of apartment complexes in the future.
In this study, the effects of spacer and variation of spacer height in reverse electrodialysis (RED) on the seawater and ion transport were investigated. A three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation for a hexagonal spacer was constructed. The results showed that the swirl in the channel and ion transport rate to the membrane were enhanced at higher Reynolds number, on the other hand, pressure difference between the inlet and outlet was increased. Moreover thicker spacer increased Power number and Sherwood number.
