  • This paper investigates the mechanical behavior of full-scale offshore fish cages under hydrodynamic loads. To simulate different cases, different materials were used in the fish cage and analyzed under different flow velocities. The cage system is studied in two parts: net cage and floating collar. Analyses were performed with the ANSYS Workbench program, which allows the Finite Element Method (FEM) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method to be used together. Firstly, the fish cage was designed, and adjusted for FSI: Fluid (Fluent) analysis. Secondly, mesh structures were created, and hydrodynamic loads acting on the cage elements were calculated. Finally, the hydrodynamic loads were transferred to the mechanical model and applied as a pressure on the geometry. In this study, the equivalent (von Mises) stress, equivalent strain, and total deformation values of cage elements under hydrodynamic loads were investigated. The data obtained from the analyses were presented as figures and tables. As a result, it has been shown that it is appropriate to use all the materials examined for the net cage and the floating collar.

  • Recently, a few types of fish-cage in open sea are researched. This fish-cage has to operate monitoring system for keeping an optimum living condition for fish. The most efficient monitoring system is WVMS(Wireless Vision Monitoring System) for fish-cage in open sea. WVMS should be able to transmit video signal and communicate with each controller. So. it needs to be based on WLAN(Wireless LAN) which has characteristic of higher transfer-rate, In this paper, we propose a structure of WVMS using WLAN equipments for maritime environment and prove its effectiveness. We present the propagation loss model of WVMS's communication channel. measured by field test, and discuss its validity compared with the predictive value based on the Friss propagation model and Plane earth reflection model. We present the number of frames that is received from WLAN modem connecting with underwater-camera in field test spots. As a result, we confirmed that proposed WVMS is suitable for maritime environment and it is possible to be applied to fish-cage in open sea on 'seogwipo'.

  • The Spinal cage is the cage-shaped implantable medical device used to treat structural abnormalities caused by degenerative intervertebral disks. In order to secure enough space to provide the mechanical stability and the intervertebral fusion, after removing the intervertebral disc, the Spinal cage is transplanted between the intervertebral space. A hammer is used to push the spinal cage into a narrow space during the spinal cage transplant surgery. Due to the impact and pressure, damage occurs frequently on the spinal cage. In this study, a test model is constructed to measure the value of impulse generally applied on the Spinal cage. The figures of internal impulse before and after the improvement of the Spinal cage are then compared to suggest direction to improve the reliability of the spinal cage.

  • An innovative cage for spinal fusion surgery is presented within this work. The cage utilizes shape memory alloy for its hinge actuation. Because of the use of SMA, a smaller incision is needed which makes the cage deployment minimally invasive. In the development of the cage, a model for predicting the torsional behavior of SMAs was developed and verified experimentally. The prototype design of the cage was developed and manufactured. The prototype was subjected to static tests per ASTM specifications. The cage survived all of the tests, alluding to its safety within the body.

  • In this research, the submersible fish cage was designed to avoid structural and biological damage during harsh sea conditions. The submersible cage system consists of netting, mooring ropes, a floating collar, floats, sinkers and anchors. Whole elements of the cage were modeled on the mass-spring model. The computer simulations were carried out to investigate the dynamic behavior of the cage and to calculate mooring line tension subjected to tidal currents and waves. As expected, the tension values in the mooring line of the submerged position are 36% less compared to that of the surface cage under the same loading conditions. As the wave was used in combination with the current velocity of 1m/s, the average tensile load for the submerged cage showed 85% of the value for the floating cage. The simulation results provide an improved understanding of the behaviors of the structure and valuable information on the optimized design of the cage system exposed to open ocean environmental factors.

  • Unexpected postoperative changes, such as growth in rib hump, has been occasionally reported after corrective surgery for scoliosis. However there has been experimental data for explanation of these changes, nor the suggestion of optimal correction method. This numerical study was designed to investigate the main correlating elements in operative kinematics with post-operative changes of vertebral rotation and rib cage deformation in the corrective surgery of scoliosis. To develop a scoliotic spine model automatically, a special program for converting normal spine model to scoliotic spine model was developed. A mathematical finite element model of normal spine including rib cage, sternum, both clavicles, and pelvis was developed with anatomical details. The skeletal deformity of scoliosis was reconstructed, by mapping the X-ray images of a scoliosis into this three dimensional normal spine and rib cage model. The geometric mapping was performed by translating and rotating the spinal colume with the amount analyzed from the digitized 12 built-in coordinate axes in each vertebral image. By utilizing this program, problems generated in mapping procedure such as facet joint overlapping, vertebral body deformity could be automatically resolved.

  • Mobile fish-cage was developed assuming a cage net with an enclosed area, which and estimated the hydrodynamic characteristics of the cage through the model experiment. Flux-shielding plates, installed in the bow were compared with the resistance test carried out by making a hole, bilge keel and stud, and basic block flow rate consisting of the results to a flat surface plate. The experimental results confirmed the improved resistance performance effect of 3~6% in the bilge keel and the stud form. To assess the stability of the fish-cage, evaluation of the stability in accordance with the stability criteria for determining the floating docks had confirmed that it satisfied the static stability performance under operating conditions at sea.

  • This paper examines the design feasibility of cage aquaculture coexistent with an offshore wind farm in the southwestern sea of South Korea. Among the many types of fish farms, 2 × 3 cage aquaculture was selected for the investigation and the initial design including mooring lines, bridles, etc. was drawn with iterative numerical simulations using Orcaflex. Experimental campaigns were conducted to validate the numerical results, and they were found to be in good agreement with the experiments. Using a validated numerical model, the tension of mooring lines and the deformed volumes of the facility were examined under given operating and survival conditions. The validated model will be further used to investigate various aspects of the cage farm design for design optimization.

  • Negative corona onset characteristics of the stranded conductors based on the ultra-high voltage (UHV) corona cage were studied in the paper. Based on the corona self-sustaining criterion in extreme uneven electric fields and the secondary emission process of the photoelectrons, the corona onset calculation model in the UHV corona cage is established and the corona current tests of the single LGJ900-75, 6 bundle LGJ900-75, 8 bundle LGJ400-35 conductors in dry and rain conditions were done in the UHV corona cage, and the rain rates are 2.4 mm/h, 20 mm/h and 30 mm/h. Corona onset electric field strength is gained by E-I tangent method, and the onset electric field strength in dry condition proves that the calculation model can be used to calculate the corona onset characteristics of the bundle conductors in the UHV corona cage. A further analysis proves that: the negative corona onset voltage of the conductor increases with the bundle number and the diameter of the sub conductor, but decreases with the bundle space in the corona cage. The onset electric field strength is influenced little by bundle space and bundle number, but decreases with the increase of the diameter of the sub-conductor. The surface irregularity coefficient decreases with the rain rate.
