  • In the product design process computer-aided engineering and optimization tools are widely utilized in order to reduce the total development time and cost. Since several simulation tools are involved in the process, information losses, omissions, or errors are common and the importance of seamless information exchange among the tools has been increased. In this study ISO STEP standards are adopted to represent the neutral format for CAE/CAO information exchange. The schema of AP209 is used to define the information of finite element analysis and the new schema is proposed to describe the information of structural optimization based on the STEP methodology. The schema is implemented by EXPRESS, information modeling language, and ST-Developer is employed to generate C++ classes and STEP Rose Library by using the schema denoted. To substantiate the proposed approach, the information access interfaces of the finite element modeling software (FEMAP), structural optimization software (GENESIS) and in-house topology optimization program are developed. Examples of the size optimization of a three-bar truss and topology optimization of a MBB beam are shown to validate the information exchange of finite element analysis and structural optimization using STEP standards.

  • In mechanical design, optimization procedures have mostly been implemented solely by CAE codes combined by optimization routine, in which the model is built, analyzed and optimized. In the complex geometries, however, CAD is indispensable tool for the efficient and accurate modeling. This paper presents a method to carry out optimization, in which CAD and CAE are used for modeling and analysis respectively and integrated in an optimization routine. Application Programming Interface (API) function is exploited to automate CAD modeling, which enables direct access to CAD. The advantage of this method is that the user can create very complex object in Parametric and automated way, which is impossible in CAE codes. Unigraphics and ANSYS are adopted as CAD and CAE tools. In ANSYS, automated analysis is done using codes made by a script language, APDL(ANSYS Parametric Design Language). Optimization is conducted by VisualDOC and IDESIGN respectively. As an illustrative example, a mold design problem is studied, which is to minimize temperature deviation over a diagonal line of the surface of the mold in contact with hot glass.

통합된 CAD/CAE 자동화 System을 이용한 구조강도해석 및 설계최적화에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Structural Analysis & Design Optimization Using Automation System Integrated with CAD/CAE)

  • In this paper, a CAD/CAE integrated optimal design system is developed, in which design and analysis process is automated using CAD/CAE softwares for a complex model in which the modeling by parametric feature is not easy to apply. Unigraphics is used for CAD modeling, in which the process is automated by using UG/Knowledge Fusion for modeling itself and UG/Open API function for the other functions respectively. Structural analyses are also carried out automatically by ANSYS using the imported parasolid model. The developed system is applied for the PLS(Plasma Lighting System) consisting of more than 20 components, which is a next generation illumination system that is used to illuminate stadium or outdoor advertizing panel. The analyses include responses by static, wind and impact loads. As a result of analyses, tilt assembly, which is a link between upper and lower body, is found to be the most critical component bearing higher stresses. Experiment is conducted using MTS to validate the analysis result. Optimization is carried out using the software Visual DOC for the tilt assembly to minimize material volume while maintaining allowable stress level. As a result of optimization, the maximum stress is reduced by 57% from the existing design, though the material volume has increased by 21%.

CAE 기법을 활용한 심해 내압구조물의 최적설계에 관한 연구 (Optimal Design of Deep-Sea Pressure Hulls using CAE tools)

  • 내압구조물의 구조적 성능에 영향을 주는 주요 요소로 형상, 쉘 두께, 보강재 배치 안 그리고 제작 재료 등을 나열할 수 있다. 전통적인 이론적 방법론에 근거한 내압구조물의 설계는 신속하며 만족할 만한 결과를 제공하지만 이는 일부 특정한 형상, 쉘 두께 및 제작 재료 등에 제한되어 있다. 본 논문에서는 최적화된 형상, 쉘 두께, 보강재 배치 안 그리고 복합재료 적층 정보 등을 얻을 수 있는 최적설계 기법에 근거한 진보된 대체 방법론을 다루고 있다. CAE 기반의 최적설계 기법을 활용하여 내압구조물 설계에 요구되는 구조적 성능과 최적화된 설계 인자들을 얻었다. 상용화된 유한요소 프로그램임 ANSYS의 CAE 플랫폼으로부터 메타모델 기반 최적화 기법을 수행하여 원통형 내압구조물의 설계를 위한 최적의 타원형 형상을 결정하였다. 또한 최적설계 프로그램인 OptiStruct의 기울기 기반 최적설계 방법을 이용하여 복합재료 기반 내압구조물의 설계시 최적의 적층순서와 쉘 두께가 얇은 내압구조물에 대한 최적의 보강재 배치 안을 각각 도출하였다. 최적설계 예제를 통해 본 논문에서 제시하고 있는 최적설계 기법에 근거한 방법론이 내압구조물의 설계에 효과적임을 확인할 수 있었다.

금형압축성형공정 해석용 CAE 프로그램 개발 및 적용 (Development of a CAE Tool for P/M Compaction Process and Its Application)

  • Crack generation during die compaction and distortion during sintering have been critical problems for the conventional pressing and sintering process. Until now, trial and error approach with engineers' industrial experiences has been only solution to protect the crack generation and distortion. However, with complexity in shape and process it is very difficult to design process conditions without CAE analysis. We developed the exclusive CAE software (PMsolver/Compaction) for die compaction process. The accuracy of PMsolver is verified by comparing the finite element simulation results with experimental results. The simplified procedures to find material properties are proposed and verified with iron based powder and tungsten carbide powder. Based on the accurate simulation result by PMsolver, the optimal process conditions are designed to get uniform density distribution in a powder compact after die compaction process by using a derivative based optimization scheme. In addition, the effect of non-uniform density distribution in a powder compact on distortion during sintering is shown in case of the fabrication of tungsten carbide insert.

Road Noise 개선을 위한 CAE 기반 DFSS Study (CAE-based DFSS Study for Road Noise Reduction)

  • In the early phase of vehicle development, CAE is conducted as tool for vehicle performance assessment. To maintain acceptable road noise performance, solution for reduced vehicle sensitivity is required. Chassis interface dynamic stiffness characteristics are key component to isolating vibration and noise of road from the vehicle interior. This research provide how to set up the optimized dynamic characteristics under noise effect through DFSS study. CAE-based DOE is performed to build prediction math model, CMS process involves DOE to achieve very fast run times while giving results very comparable. Minimized $95^{th}$ percentile of performance distribution is applied to minimize vehicle sensitivity and road noise levels variation during the optimization process. Finally, the results of optimization were reviewed for performance and robustness.

  • 게이트 위치는 제품 품질 및 생산성 등에 큰 영향을 미치기 때문에 사출성형에 있어서 게이트 위치를 결정하는 것은 대단히 중요하며 이를 위하여 사출성형 CAE가 적용되고 있다. 사출성형 해석의 증가와 3차원 유한요소의 사용은 더 많은 계산 시간을 필요로 하게 되면서, 컴퓨터 자원을 적게 사용하면서도 빠른 시간 내에 게이트 위치 최적화를 수행하는 것은 중요한 이슈가 되었다. 본 논문에서는 유동 균형과 웰드라인을 고려하기 위하여 유동 거리에 기반한 최적화 기법을 제시하였다. 그리고 원판 형상의 모델에 적용하여 웰드라인이 응력집중이 예상되는 슬릿홀을 피하면서도 유동 균형을 유지하는 결과를 도출하였다.

TOPSIS와 전산직교배열을 적용한 자동차 로워암의 다수준 형상최적설계 (Multi-level Shape Optimization of Lower Arm by using TOPSIS and Computational Orthogonal Array)

  • In practical design process, designer needs to find an optimal solution by using full factorial discrete combination, rather than by using optimization algorithm considering continuous design variables. So, ANOVA(Analysis of Variance) based on an orthogonal array, i.e. Taguchi method, has been widely used in most parts of industry area. However, the Taguchi method is limited for the shape optimization by using CAE, because the multi-level and multi-objective optimization can't be carried out simultaneously. In this study, a combined method was proposed taking into account of multi-level computational orthogonal array and TOPSIS(Technique for Order preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution), which is known as a classical method of multiple attribute decision making and enables to solve various decision making or selection problems in an aspect of multi-objective optimization. The proposed method was applied to a case study of the multi-level shape optimization of lower arm used to automobile parts, and the design space was explored via an efficient application of the related CAE tools. The multi-level shape optimization was performed sequentially by applying both of the neural network model generated from seven-level four-factor computational orthogonal array and the TOPSIS. The weight and maximum stress of the lower arm, as the objective functions for the multi-level shape optimization, showed an improvement of 0.07% and 17.89%, respectively. In addition, the number of CAE carried out for the shape optimization was only 55 times in comparison to full factorial method necessary to 2,401 times.

  • The hybrid CAE/CAT methods are widely applied to product development in various fields because this method can predict the response of the whole system when a part of the system is changed. Especially, the hybrid CAE/CAT method is very useful to predict tile vehicle NVH characteristics after changing some parts of the vehicle. Target parts can be established on the basis of test models and FE models of the prototype constructed in the planning stage of car development. In this study, the topic was focused on the proper test-based FBS application process to predict vehicle NVH characteristic. First, the test-based FBS method was apply to vehicle substructure and car-body. And then the test-based model was replaced with FE model to apply hybrid CAE/CAT method. The replaced FE model was modified through the optimization process. The interior noise in vehicle during the drive was predicted with Modified FE model, then the predicted results were verified by experimenting with actual modified model.

Development of a Web-based MDO Framework for Design and Analysis Integration

  • The rapid progress of the Internet and network is affecting the engineering design environment as well as business that use Web technologies to enhance their competitive edge. In product development, experts and organization who take part in the design process are often geographically dispersed. Furthermore, different divisions and business often have heterogeneous CAD/CAE systems and methods for expressing product data, and addressing this heterogeneity creates additional costs and increases development time. Managing distributed CAD, CAE and other related systems in an organic and holistic manner from the initial stages of product development is imperative to ensure successful collaboration in the design process. Therefore, this study suggests a Web-based MDO framework to support interfacing and collective use of design and analysis tools.
