Calcium carbonate $(CaCO_3)$ bead immobilized with alginate were developed as buffer system to enhance the cultivation efficiency of bifidobacteria. When Bifidobacteriuim longum KCTC 3128 and HLC 3742 were independently cultivated in 2.5-liter fermenter buffered the $CaCO_3$ bead, NaOH, $Na_2CO_3$, and $NH_4OH$. The proliferation of bifidobacteria and their storage stability were higher in culture broth buffered $CaCO_3$ beads than in culture broth buffered with NaOH, $Na_2CO_3$, and $NH_4OH$. Therefore, $CaCO_3$ bead may be useful as a buffer to enhance of the cultivation efficiency and viability of bifidobacteria.
In this work, effects of limestone powder on hydration of $C_3A-CaSO_4{\cdot}2H_2O$ system was discussed based on the XRD Quantitative analysis, and the possibility of Delayed Ettringite Formation was also discussed. The early hydration of $C_3A$ was delayed by addition of $CaCO_3$ powder. The delay effect was enhanced by increasing of $CaCO_3$ content and finer powder of $CaCO_3$ addition. After consumption of $CaSO_4{\cdot}2H_2O$, the reaction of $CaCO_3$ is started. Delayed Ettringite Formation would take place because monosulfoaluminate is not stable in presence of $CaCO_3$. In order to prevent the delayed ettringite formation in $C_3A-CaSO_4{\cdot}2H_2O-CaCO_3$ system, the reduction of monosulfoaluminate formation is important. Therefore, by increasing the amount of $CaCO_3$ addition and finer $CaCO_3$ powder addition, the delayed ettringite formation can be prevented.
Grain growth behaviors of hot-rolled AZ31 (Mg-3%Al-1%Zn) and AZ31-0.3%CaO alloys at elevated temperatures have been investigated in order to clarify the effect of CaO addition on grain stability of Mg-Al-based wrought alloy. The grain size of CaO-free alloy increased steeply from 673 K with an increase in annealing temperature from 573 to 773 K, whereas the grains of CaO-containing alloy were relatively stable up to 723 K. The activation energies for grain growth ($E_g$) were 12.2 and 18.3 kJ/mole between 573 and 673 K and 119.2 and 126.9 kJ/mole between 673 and 773 K in the AZ31 and AZ31-0.3%CaO alloys, respectively. This result indicates that grains in the CaO-added alloy possess higher thermal stability than CaO-free alloy. SEM observations on the annealed alloy samples revealed that higher grain stability resulting from CaO addition would be associated with the suppression of grain growth by Ca-related precipitate particles distributed in the microstructure.
Bone mineral density depends largely on the status of dietary minerals such as Ca, P, Mg, and F and proteins, physical activities, parathyroid hormone(PTH), calcitonin(CT), and vitamin D. The decrease of bone density often results in bone fractures and osteoporosis which is prevalent among postmenopausal women. This study was intended to examine the role of parathyroid hormone, calcitonin and cholecaliferol in bone density of mice that were fed different dual photon energy beams. We have measured three major parts of the bone : whole body, head and femur. The results are summarized as follows : 1) Bone mineral density (BMD) was more increased by feeding high Ca diet compared to that of the low Ca diet. 2) Both PTH and Vit D3 enhanced BMD in all of the different Ca levels. 3) When the dietary Ca was deequate CT showed a synergistic effect with PTH in boosting bone density, while CT+Vit D3 showed a negative effect. 4) CT tended to inhibit the effect of increasing bone density by PTH and Vit D3 in medium and low Ca groups. 5) The effect of increasing bone density by PTH in the head of mouse increased when dietary Ca was lower : The increment of bone density by PTH in high, medium, and low Ca was 3%, 8%, 19%, respectively. 6) Femur bone density was affected significantly by dietary Ca levels than hormones. The above observations indicate that bone mineral density can be improved by high dietary Ca and hormone injections including PTH, CT and cholecalciferol, and thus proper dietary and hormonal treatment may be used in preventing bone fractures and osteoporosis.

$AI_2O_3/Ca-TZP$ composites was prepared by using the starting powder of alumina and Ca-TZP synthesized by hydrothermal reaction and investigated to its characteristics. The ratio of tetragonal zirconia to monoclinic within $AI_2O_3$ matrix was decreased with an addition of Ca-TZP content, but the absolute amount of tetragonal phase in composites was increased with an addition of Ca-TZP content. The value of fracture toughness in $AI_2O_3/Ca-TZP$composites was proportional to the amounts of transformed tetragonal phase which formed by crack propagation in fracture, and therefore, it was gradually increased with an addition of Ca- TZP content.
Although the blockage of a cell cycle by specific inhibitors of $Ca^{2+}/$calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMK-II) is well known, the activity profile of CaMK-II during the cell cycle in the absence of any direct effectors of the enzyme is unclear. The activity of native CaMK-II in NIH 3T3 cells was examined by the use of cell cycle-specific arresting and synchronizing methods. The total catalytic activity of CaMK-II in arrested cells was decreased about 30% in the M phase, whereas the $Ca^{2+}$-independent autonomous activity increased about 1.5-fold in the M phase and decreased about 50% at the G1/S transition. The in vivo phosphorylation level of CaMK-II was lowest at G1/S and highest in M. The CaMK-II protein level was unchanged during the cell cycle. When the cells were synchronized, the autonomous activity was increased only in M. These results indicate that the physiologically relevant portion of CaMK-II is activated only in M, and that the net activation of CaMK-II is required in mitosis.
$CaSiO_3$-garnet phase was observed in the phase transformation sequences on a natural hedenbergite, (Ca, Fe)$ SiO_3$ between 14 and 24 GPa when quenched from $~1200^{\circ}C$. Bulk modulus K = 155 GPa, $V_{\Phi}$ = 6.58 km/sec and other elastic properties of the $CaSiO_3$-garnet were obtaiend on the basis of the systematics of structural analogs in varius garnet phases and relationship of $KV_{m}$ = constant and $V_{\Phi}$$M^{$\frac{1}{2}$}$ = constant. The quenchable garnet phase apears to be stabilized by the considerable amount of Mn and other cations, and shows a wide stability range. As one of the host minerals of Ca composition, $CaSiO_3$-garnet would be one of the important mineral phases in the mantle transition region.
The increase in the resistance of $BaTio_{3}$ with addition of Ca is attributed to the formation ofthe acceptor impurity by $CaCa^{2+}$" which substitutes Ti4+. However, some authors suggested that $Ca^{2+}$ can not substitute $Ti^{4+}$ because of its larger ionic radius. In this work, the existence of acceptor by Ca hasbeen studied through the high temperature equilibrium electrical conductivity of $BaTiO_{3}$ codoped with Caand Nb, where Ba/(Ti+Ca+Nb) was kept equal to unity. It was measured at $1000^{\circ}C$, and the oxygenpartial pressure was controlled between $10^{-15}$ ~ 1 atm. Changing the amount of added Ca and Nbresulted in the compensation effect between donor and acceptor, i.e., Nb was compensated by the acceptor. And through the defect chemical interpretation of the measured data, it was concluded that Ti canbe substitued with Ca. The existence of such acceptor was reaffirmated by ICTS(Isotherma1 CapacitanceTransient Spectroscopy) measurements.oscopy) measurements.
