Effect of Harvest Date after Heading. Storage Temperature and Duration on the Dormancy and Germination Percentage in Barley Cultivars (보리종자의 수확시기, 저장온도 및 기간에 따른 휴면성과 발아율에 관한 연구)

  • To investigate the effect of harvest time after heading, storage temperature and duration on the dormancy and germination in barley cultivars, the kernels were collected at 5 day intervals from 20 days after heading until 35 days. The kernels were dried at 2$0^{\circ}C$ for 7 days and storaged in freezing chamber (-15$^{\circ}C$). The kernels germinated better at 15$^{\circ}C$ than at $25^{\circ}C$, and 1% $H_2O$$_2$ and 3 ppm GA$_3$ treatments gave much higher germination percentage than non-treatment; $H_2O$$_2$ and GA$_3$ treatments were good for promoting germination of immature harvested kernels. Germination rate index were significantly correlated with germination percentage under $25^{\circ}C$ and 15$^{\circ}C$ temperature conditions. Hangmi, Jogangbori and Muanbori had deep or slight dormancy at the different harvesting time, especially Dusan #8 had the deepest dormancy. The dormancy broke more rapidly under 3$0^{\circ}C$ than 2$0^{\circ}C$ storage conditions, so high temperature accelerated dormancy breaking. Those results showed that dormancy was various with the cultivars, harvesting time, storage temperature and storage duration.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel hardware architecture to facilitate the applicable SoC chip design of H.264/SVC which has a great deal of advancement in the international standardization in recent. Moreover, a new C-model simulator based on the proposed hardware system will be presented to support optimal SoC circuit development. Since the proposed SVC decoder is consist of some hardware engine for processing of major decoding tools and core processor for software processing, the system is simply implemented with the conventional embedded system. To improve the feasibility and applicability, and reduce the decoder complexity, the hardware decoder architecture is constructed with only the consideration of IPPP structure scalability without using the full B-picture. Finally, we present results of decoder hardware implementation and decoded picture to show the effectiveness of the proposed hardware architecture and C-model simulator.

  • Stability of the anthocyanin pigment isolated from 'Comet' radish was decreased with increase of pH from 1.0 to 8.0. The destruction rate of anthocyanin at early stage was faster at pH 1.0 than pH 2.0 and 3.0, increased with increase of storage temperature from $0^{\circ}C\;to\;40^{\circ}C$. Thus the pigment preservability at $0^{\circ}C\;and\;40^{\circ}C$ after 10 days was 92.5% and 48.1%, and the half life at $0^{\circ}C\;and\;40^{\circ}C$ was 94.9 and 12.1 days, respectively Pigment was decreased with increase of ascorbic acid content from 0.015g to 0.05g.

  • Dry gel composed of primary particles more homogeneous than starting boehmite powder was prepared by dispersing and gelling the boehmite powder. The transformation temperatures of boehmite powder, dry gel seeded with 0, 1, 3, 5 wt% $\alpha$-Al2O3, and ball milled gel were 1192$^{\circ}C$, 1184$^{\circ}C$, 1141$^{\circ}C$, 1119$^{\circ}C$, 1117$^{\circ}C$, and 1106$^{\circ}C$, respectively. Sintering behavior of dry gel without seed was similar to that of boehmite powder, but the sintered density of dry gel was improved as much as 10%~15% than boehmite powder. In the case of dry gel seeded with 5 wt% $\alpha$-Al2O3, sintering behavior was much improved. The relative density of the gel seeded with 5 wt% $\alpha$-Al2O3 was 96% when sintered at 140$0^{\circ}C$ for 1h. On the other hand, ball milling of the non-seeded sol for 48h resulted in the relative density of 97% when sintered at 130$0^{\circ}C$ for 1h. The size and amount of $\alpha$-Al2O3 particles added by ball milling were 0.107 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 0.5 wt%.

Transcriptional regulation of genetic variants in the SLC40A1 promoter

  • Solute carrier 40A1 (SLC40A1) encodes ferroportin, which is the only known transmembrane protein that exports elemental iron from mammalian cells and is essential for iron homeostasis. Mutations in SLC40A1 are associated with iron-overload disorders. In addition to ferroportin diseases, SLC40A1 expression is downregulated in various cancer types. Despite the clinical significance of the SLC40A1 transporter, only a few studies have investigated genetic variants in SLC40A1. The present study was performed to identify genetic variations in the SLC40A1 promoter and functionally characterize each variant using in vitro assays. We investigated four haplotypes and five variants in the SLC40A1 promoter. We observed that haplotype 3 (H3) had significantly lower promoter activity than H1, whereas the activity of H4 was significantly higher than that of H1. Luciferase activity of H2 was comparable to that of H1. In addition, four variants of SLC40A1, c.-1355G>C, c.-662C>T, c.-98G>C, and c.-8C>G, showed significantly increased luciferase activity compared to the wild type (WT), whereas c.-750G>A showed significantly decreased luciferase activity compared to the WT. Three transcription factors, cAMP response element-binding protein-1 (CREB-1), chicken ovalbumin upstream promoter transcription factor 1, and hepatic leukemia factor (HLF), were predicted to bind to the promoter regions of SLC40A1 near c.-662C>T, c.-98G>C, and c.-8C>G, respectively. Among these, CREB1 and HLF bound more strongly to the variant sequences than to the WT and functioned as activators of SLC40A1 transcription. Collectively, our findings indicate that the two SLC40A1 promoter haplotypes affect SLC40A1 transcription, which is regulated by CREB-1 and HLF.

Preparation and Maghemite Using Waste Pickling Acid (산세폐액을 이용한 Maghemite의 제조)

  • In this study, we tried to synthesis iron hydroxide suitable for longitudinal magnetic recording media from waste acid, which is a by-product of an iron works factory. Effects of initial pH of reactants, reaction temperature, reaction time for the synthesis of acicular iron hydroxide were studied in relation to particle properties of iron hydroxide and magnetic properties of maghemite powders. As the pH in reactant solution increased, $\beta$-FeOOH(pH=4.5), mixture of $\beta$-FeOOH and $\alpha$-FeOOH(4.5$\alpha$-FeOOH and Fe3O4(6.4$\alpha$-FeOOH (pH>13) was found to from in order. Especially, $\alpha$-FeOOH formed above pH 13 was single phase with superior acicularity. The temperature range over which the single-phase goethite can be formed increased as the initial pH of reactants increased (pH 13:10~5$0^{\circ}C$, pH 13.2:10~7$0^{\circ}C$, pH 13.5:0~8$0^{\circ}C$). The goethite formed between 40~6$0^{\circ}C$ has superior characteristics because the acicularity increased with increasing temperature but at high temperature (>6$0^{\circ}C$) Fe3O4 (pH=13) was found to start to form. Generally, single phase of goethite was found to form after one hour when an optimized condition. The particle size of goethite did not change as the reaction time increased over one hour. Accordingly, the magnetic properties of ${\gamma}$-Fe2O3 produced from goethite were not altered.

Downregulation of bcl-xL Is Relevant to UV-induced Apoptosis in Fibroblasts

  • Exposure to ultraviolet light (UV) induces apoptosis in mammalian cells, The caspase group of proteases is required for the appotosis. This pathway is initiated by a release of cytochrome c from the mitochondria into the cytosol. Several Bcl-2 family proteins can regulate the release of cytochrome c by stabilizing the mitochondrial membrane. Here we show that expression of the endogenous bcl-xL was strongly downregulated in NIH3T3 cells within 2 h after UV-C irradiation, and that of bax was upregulated from 8 h after irradiation. Apoptosis was induced in more than 50% of the NIH3T3 cells 48 h after irradiation. Constitutive overexpression of bcl-xL in NIH3T3 cells protected the UV-induced apoptosis by preventing the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential and the activation of caspase 9. There results suggest that downregulation of Bcl-xL is relevant to UV-induced apoptosis of tibroblasts.

  • The temperature effects on the equilibria between polymolybdatd anions in 1M sodium perchlorate solution has been investigated in the temperature range of 20~50$^{\circ}$C. The polymolybdate anions formed are heptamolybdate ($Mo_7O_{24}^{6-}$) ions and the protonized forms of heptamolybdate ions ($H_LMo_7O_{24}^{(6-L)-}$). The equilibrium constants for the formation of heptamolybdate ions calculated by Sillen's method are as follow;$8H^{+}+7MoO_4^{2-}=Mo_7O_{24}^{6-}+4H_2O$, $k_{7.8}=2.77{\times}10^{53}:20^{\circ}C= 9.29{\times}10^{51}:40^{\circ}C$,$k_{7.8}= 4.22{\times}10^{52}:30^{\circ}C = 9.29{\times}10^{51}:50^{\circ}C$ The enthalpy change for calculated for the above reaction is 31.51 kcal/mole. A method of calculation of the equilibrium constants for the formation of protonized heptamolybdate ions from heptamolybdate ions and hydrogen ions has been derived. The equilibrium constants calculated for the formation of protonized heptamolybdate ions are as follow; $ LH^++ Mo_7O_{24}^{-6} = H_LMo_7O_{24}^{(6-L)-} : L = 1\;or\;2$, $k_1 = 2.31{\times}10^4=2.53{\times}10^4=2.76{\times}10^4= 3.10{\times}10^4$, $k_2 = 6.19{\times}10^7\;20^{\circ}C = 7.80{\times}10^7\;30^{\circ}C = 1.22{\times}10^8\;40^{\circ}C = 2.03{\times}10^8\;50^{\circ}C$The enthalpy change for the following step reactions are as follow;$H^{+}+Mo_7O_{24}^{6-}= HMo_7O_{24}^{5-}\;{\Delta}H^{\circ}=1.90 kcal/mole$, $2H^{+}+Mo_7O_{24}^{6-}=H_2Mo_7O_{24}^{4-}\;{\Delta}H^{\circ}=7.50kcal/mole$

  • A comet that passes extremely close to the Sun at perihelion is called a sungrazing comet (of sungrazer). Around 1270 sungrazing comets have been discovered on coronagraph images from the SOHO (SOlar and Heliospheric Observatory) spacecraft since 1996 up to April, 2007. The major groups orbiting around the Sun in similar orbits are named as Kreutz, Meyer, Marsden, and Kracht 1&2 families. About 85% of SOHO comets belong to the Kreutz family with perihelion on distances of less than about $2{\sim}3R_{\bigodot}$. The distributions of perihelia and the orbital elements of SOHO sungrazing comets are analyzed. We investigated closely spaced pairs and clusters in the orbital element space. Here, we suggest three prospective groups of the sungrazing cornets: [(C/2000 Y6, C/2000 Y7), (C/2000 V4, C/2001 T5), (C/2003 H6, C/2003 H7)].
