Objectives : The effects of ethanol extract of Plantago asiatica L. were investgated on adipocyte differentiation, lipopogenesis, lipolysis and apoptosis using differnentiated 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Methods : Plantago asiatica L. was extracted with ethanol (CCE). We carried on MTT assay for cell proliferation, Oil Red O staining for determination of cell differentiation and intracelluar adipogenesis. TUNEL staining assay for cell apoptosis, and Western blot analysis for measurement of pAMPK and pACC, $C/EBP{\alpha}$, $PPAR{\gamma}$ protein expressions were performed. Results : The addition of CCE up to 0.2 mg/ml into cell culture media showed no cytotoxicity. Treatment of 0.2 mg/ml CCE significantly inhibited differentiation in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. Lipid accumulation of the CCE treated cells was decreased compared with that of control. Induction of cell apoptosis was increased in CCE treated cells compared with that of control. AMPK and ACC levels of the cells with 0.2 mg/ml CCE were led to phosphorylation and also expressions of $C/EBP{\alpha}$ and $PPAR{\gamma}$, as adipogenic transcription factors, were suppressed compared with those of control. Conclusions : Taken together, these results provide evidence that CCE has a regulatory role in lipid metabolism that is related to differentiation into adipocytes, adipogenesis and apoptosis.

A key component of wound healing is epithelialization, which involves the proliferation and migration of epidermal keratinocytes surrounding the wound. Increasing cortisol, a stress hormone, is known to slow the healing process by inhibiting cell proliferation and migration. This study aims to develop an ingredient that can promote delayed wound healing by cortisol through a combination of Centella asiatica (C. asiatica), known for its excellent wound healing effect, and Rosamarinus officinalis (R. officinalis) leaf known for their antipsychotic effect. R. officinalis leaf extract was found to inhibit the activity of 11β-HSD1, an enzyme involved in the production of cortisol. A combination of C. asiatica and R. officinalis leaf extracts (AlfaCalm) was found to enhance cortisol induced delayed keratinocyte migration to a greater extent than C. asiatica extract. AlfaCalm enhanced the expression of CDC42 and the formation of filopodia, which are crucial for the relaxation of the actin skeleton. These results suggest that AlfaCalm can be used as an effective wound healing material in stress condition.
To investigate the distribution of Plantago asiatica Linne, almost, restricted on the road-side, the plant growth analyzed by experimental cultivation under the condition of tread-pressure; 10 times/day (7.33kg/$cm^2$
), 20 times/day (12.27kg/$cm^2$), 30 times/day (20.05kg/$cm^2$
) and the control plot (1.68kg/$cm^2$
). The matter production in the 10-time-per-diem plot (7.33kg/$cm^2$
) of tread-pressure howed more large value than that inthe control one (1.68kg/$cm^2$
) and those in the 20-0time-per-diem plot (12.27kg/$cm^2$
) and the 30-time-per-diem one (20.05kg/$cm^2$
) small values than that of the control plot. Especially, the growth of roots and spikes was extremely repressed. The number of leaves, scapes and lateral buds tend to increase in the tread-pressure of 20 times/day (12.27kg/$cm^2$
) and 30 times/day (20.05kg/$cm^2$
). The water contents of roots along the increase of tread-pressure to continuosly decreased. By the increase of tread-pressure, T/R ratio and C/F ratio their group decreased. The plant growth (7.33kg/$cm^2$
) in the 10-time-per-diem plot increased more than that in the control one is regarded as the effect of tread-pressure affection on the road-side distribution of this plant.
Mycoplasma-like organisms (MLO) were identified from three plants. The disease symptoms show stunting, yellowing and witche's broom on Cnidium officinale Makino collected from Ulreung Island, Bupleurum falcatum L. collected from Jangsu, and Plantago asiatica L. collected from Daegwanreung. The particles of MLO were observed in the phloem tissues by a Hitachi Hu-11E electron microscope. C. officinale infected with MLO was frequently observed in Ulreung Island.
History and current status of human taeniasis in the Republic of Korea, due to Taenia solium, Taenia asiatica, and Taenia saginata, are briefly reviewed. Until the 1980s, human taeniasis had been quite common in various localities of Korea. A study from 1924 reported 12.0% egg prevalence in fecal examinations. Thereafter, the prevalence of Taenia spp. ranged from 3% to 14% depending on the time and locality. Jeju-do, where pigs were reared in a conventional way, was the highest endemic area of taeniasis. An analysis of internal transcribed spacer 2 and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase 1 genes of 68 taeniasis cases reported from 1935 to 2005 in Korea by a research group revealed the relative occurrence of the 3 Taenia spp. as follows: T. solium (4.4%), T. asiatica (75.0%), and T. saginata (20.6%). However, national surveys on intestinal helminths conducted every 5 years on randomly selected people revealed that the Taenia egg prevalence dropped from 1.9% in 1971 to 0.02% in 1997 and finally to 0.0% in 2004. With the exception of 3 egg-positive cases reported in 2008 and 2 worm-proven cases in 2011, no more cases have been officially recorded. Based on these surveys and also on other literature, it can be concluded that taeniasis has virtually disappeared from Korea, although a few sporadic cases may remain hidden. Human cysticercosis is also expected to disappear within a couple of decades in Korea.

Centella asiatica (L.) Urban is a medicinal plant containing madecassic acid, triterpenoids and asiaticoside, and has a wound healing effect. However, since it grows only in some regions of Korea, it is necessary to breed stable varieties. In this study, it were analyzed for the growth characteristics, asiaticoside, anxiodant components and 2,2-diphenyl-1picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavening activity of C. asiatica collected from domestic natural habitat (Hapcheon, Gyeongnam). In the growth characteristics of each resource, CA9 and CA10 were superior in characteristics of aerial part and in dry weight. In asiaticoside content analysis, CA5 and CA3 were high with 53.96 mg/g and 52.40 mg/g, respectively. CA12 showed the possibility of development because the resource showed high in total flavonoid (7.3 mg/g), total polyphenol (10.64 mg/g) and DPPH activity (11.96 mg AAE/g) among other resources. However, it is necessary to select a resource suitable for each characteristic of C. asiatica and to study charateristics through additional resources collection since the excellent growth characteristics of the collected resources do not necessarily coincide with the content and antioxidant activities.

Phosphatidylcholine was used to encapsulate aqueous extracts of Centella asiatica, and its biological activity was compared with another aqueous extracts. Nanoparticle of C. asiatica was made by encapsulation to w/o type spherical liposome which of aqueous extracts seized with oil phase as 78.2 nm average diameter. Cytotoxicity of the nanoparticle was measured on human skin fibroblast cells, CCD-986sk, and showed lower cytotoxicity on 1.0 mg/$m{\ell}$ of highest concentration as 28% than that of another extracts. The nanoparticle showed the highest promotion of human B and T cell growth up to 138% and 135%, respectively, compared to the control. and the NK cell growth was promoted up to 8% higher than the control in proportion to secretion of IL-6 and TNF-$\alpha$ from immune cell growth. Also nanoparticle showed highest inhibition activity of hyaluronidase on 1.0 mg/$m{\ell}$ of highest concentration as 60.5%. It seems that because of enhanced biological application of aqueous extracts on cell through nano-encapsulation process.

Enhancement effect of ultrasonification process on UV-protection and skin-whitening activities using Centella asiatica L. Urban extract was investigated. Cytotoxicity of the extracts measured on human skin fibroblast cells, CCD-986sk, and then, ultrasonification associated extracts showed 5~9% lower cytotoxicity then normal crude extracts on 1.0 mg/$m{\ell}$ of highest sample concentration. The associated extrats showed highest inhibition activity of hyaluronidase on 1.0 mg/$m{\ell}$ of concentration as 54.2%. Also, the associated extract reduced expression of MMP-1 on UV-irradiated CCD-986sk cells down to 100.2% from 136.1%, and revealed high inhibitory potency on tyrosinase as 74.6% by adding 1.0 mg/$m{\ell}$ of concentration. Ultrasonification associated extract showed strong inhibition effect of melanin production on Clone M-3 cells as 84.2% by adding 1.0 mg/$m{\ell}$ of concentration. From the preliminary observations, we considered that the extracts from C. asiatica could be potent natural materials for skin-whitening and anti-aging agent, and could enhance the activities by ultrasonification process.
Allelopathic activity of dominant upland weed species was determined using aqueous and methanol extracts and dried residues of the weeds. Germination and seedling growth of radish (Raphanus sativus L.) and sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) were greatly inhibited by 2% (w/v) aqueous extracts of Artemisia asiatica Nakai and Portulaca oleracea L., respectively. Great phytotoxicity on both indicator plants occurred by 2% (w/v) aqueous extracts of Capsel/a bursa-pastoris (L.) Medik. A complete inhibition in germination and seedling growth of radish was caused by 2% (w/v) methanol extract of A. asiatica. There was about 90% inhibition in germination and seedling growth of sesame due to 2% (w/v) methanol extracts of A. asiatica, P. oleracea and Trifolium repens L. Phytotoxic effects varied with extract solution, weed species and indicator plants employed, indicating that the weed species contained different contents and kinds of allelopathic chemicals. Water potential and pH adjusted to those of the extracts did not affect germination and seedling growth of the indicator plants. Phytotoxicity increased with increasing concentration of the extracts obtained from four suspected alleopathic weeds. Soil-incorporated plant residues of A. asiatica and P. oleracea caused greater phytotoxicity on radish than those of C. bursa-pastoris and T. repens.
Artemisia Herb is the dry aboveground part of Artemisia asiatica (Compositae). This is listed officially in the Korean Herbal Pharmacopoeia and used mainly in stopping all kinds of bleeding, regulating menses and curing menstrual disorders as well as in alleviating pain. Eupatilin and jaceosidin were isolated from Sazabalsuk and Sajuarisuk. and identified by means of spectral methods $(UV,\;^1H\;and\;^{13}C-NMR,\;MS) $ and quantitative analysis using HPLC. Regression equations for two flavonoid component standards obtained from Artemisia asiatica were $y=76069_x\;+\;107329\;(r=0.9999^{**})$ for eupatilin, $y=76651_x\;+\;77399\;(r=0.9996^{**})$ for jaceosidin. The eupatilin content of Sazabalsuk was 240mg, jaceosidin was 10mg in 100 g dry leaves. The Sajuarisuk were 330mg, 123mg in 100g dry leaves, respectively.
