Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa) is a cyanobacterium species that can form harmful algal blooms in freshwater bodies worldwide. The use of Artemisia asiatica extracts to control M. aeruginosa inhibition will be environmentally friendly and promising. Artemisia asiatica extracts removed successfully upto 88% of M. aeruginosa pH 8 at $25^{\circ}C$ of temperature. These results was indicated that the amount of 2.24 g/L Artemisia asiatica extracts was removed 1g dryweight/L of M. aeruginosa. The kinetic data showed substrate inhibition kinetics and maximum growth rate was obtained when the M. aeruginosa was grown in medium containing 2.5 g/L of initial concentration of Artemisia asiatica extracts. In the various growth control models, Luong model showed the highest correlation coefficient of 0.9916. Therefore, the Luong model was the most suitable control model for the growth control of M. aruginosa using Artemisia asiatica extracts. In conclusion, the growth control of M. aruginosa using Artemisia asiatica extracts can be applied in the field without controlling the temperature and pH of rivers and streams, and it is possible to control the growth of M. aruginosa efficiently in a short time. The natural extract, Artemisia asiatica extracts, can be a promising inhibition due to its high efficiency and low dose requirements.

Background: Centella asiatica is a well-known medicinal plant having a wound healing effect. In this study, the growth, asiaticoside content, and antioxidant components and activity were investigated in C. asiatica resources under different cultivation and irrigation conditions. Methods and Results: The cultivation and irrigation methods were divided as greenhouse and open field, and sprinkler and sub irrigation. respectively. Growth characteristics were measured in aerial parts of C. asiatica. Asiaticoside content was analyzed using high performance liquid chromatography. Total polyphenol, total flavonoid and 2,2-diphenyl-1picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity were analyzed for antioxidant activities. Growth was higher under greenhouse and sub irrigation than open field and sprinkler conditions. In the leaves, asiaticoside content was 53.45 mg/g (open field) and 34.38 mg/g (sub irrigation), total polyphenol was 41.14 mg/g (open field) and 25.73 mg/g (sub-irrigation), and total flavonoid was 27.26 mg/g (open field) and 23.72 mg/g (sub-irrigation). DPPH radical scavenging activity in the leaves was 85.97 mg·ascorbic acid equivalent (AAE)/g (open field) and 54.83 mg·AAE/g (sub irrigation). Conclusions: Asiaticoside and antioxidant components and activity were not accompanied with high yield, although high growth was observed under greenhouse conditions. Therefore, cultural requirements of C. asiatica should be sufficiently considered to suit each purpose.
Twelve 924 bp cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) mitochondrial DNA sequences from Taenia asiatica isolates from Thailand were aligned and compared with multiple sequence isolates from Thailand and 6 other countries from the GenBank database. The genetic divergence of T. asiatica was also compared with Taenia saginata database sequences from 6 different countries in Asia, including Thailand, and 3 countries from other continents. The results showed that there were minor genetic variations within T. asiatica species, while high intraspecies variation was found in T. saginata. There were only 2 haplotypes and 1 polymorphic site found in T. asiatica, but 8 haplotypes and 9 polymorphic sites in T.saginata. Haplotype diversity was very low, 0.067, in T. asiatica and high, 0.700, in T. saginata. The very low genetic diversity suggested that T. asiatica may be at a risk due to the loss of potential adaptive alleles, resulting in reduced viability and decreased responses to environmental changes, which may endanger the species.

This research was performed to determine the temperature requirements for embryo growth and radicle emergence of Hepatica asiatica Nakai, a perennial herb native to Korea. Seed viability, embryo growth, and radicle emergence were monitored in seeds exposed to various temperatures (10, 15, $20^{\circ}C$ and $30{\rightarrow}15^{\circ}C$). Laboratory experiments at various temperatures revealed that (1) embryo elongation occurred effectively between 10 and $15^{\circ}C$; (2) radicle emergence occurred only at $15^{\circ}C$; (3) a warm stratification (2-8 weeks at $30^{\circ}C$) was not required for embryo elongation and radicle emergence, and led to inhibition of radicle emergence; (4) application of gibberellic acid ($GA_3$) promoted embryo growth, but not radicle emergence. These results suggested that H. asiatica seeds have two separate mechanisms to overcome dormancy, either by $GA_3$ (morphological dormancy) or temperature (physiological dormancy), and warm stratification is not involved in breaking radicle dormancy. These findings indicate that H. asiatica seeds have morphophysiological dormancy.
Periodontal regeneration requires the migration and proliferation of gingival fibroblasts and periodontal ligament cells. These cellular events are influenced and regulated by growth factors and some drugs. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of Rhizoma coptidis and Centella asiatica extracts on human gingival fibroblasts. Gingival fibroblasts were primarily cultured from extracted premolar with non-periodontal diseases. Cells were cultured with ${\alpha}-MEM$ at $37^{\circ}C$, 5% $CO_2$, 100% humidity incubator for 2 or 3 days, as a measure of cell proliferation potential, it was examined that the DNA synthesis using $[^3H]-thyrnidine$ incorporation, the cell numbers (with or without dye), and cell viabilities. Rhizoma coptidis is increased the proliferation of gingival fibroblasts at concentration of $10^{-9}g/ml$, but Centella asiatica is decreased the proliferation at all concentrations. This study demonstrated that Rhizoma coptidis is a potential mitogen for human gingival fibroblasts in vitro, and we can expect the usefulness of this drug in periodontal regeneration.
The cytotoxicity-guided fractionation of the seed of Plantago asiatica extracts led to the isolation of four compounds, responsible for the cytotoxicity against four human tumor cell lines, i. e., A431 (Human Epidermoid carcinoma), KHOS-NP (Human Osteosarcoma). SNU-1 (Human stomach carcinoma), SNU-C4 (Human large intestine carcinoma). The structure were elucidated by the phsyco chemical data: ${\beta}-sitosterol(C1)$, $cholest-5-en-3{\beta}-ol(C2)$, rutin(C3), $coumarin-7-O-{\beta}-glucopyranoside(C4)$. $IC_{50}$ values of compound C2 were 14.6, 13.5, 10.3, 17.8 ${\mu}g/ml$, and compound C3 and C4 showed activity, having $IC_{50}$ values ranging from 10.3 to 20.14 ${\mu}g/ml$.
We report here a human case of Taenia asiatica infection which was confirmed by genetic analyses in Dali, China. A patient was found to have symptoms of taeniasis with discharge of tapeworm proglottids. By sequencing of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) gene, we observed nucleotide sequence identity of 99% with T. asiatica and 96% with T. saginata. Using the cytochrome b (cytb) gene, 99% identity with T. asiatica and 96% identity with T. saginata were found. Our findings suggest that taeniasis of people in Dali, China may be mainly caused by T. asiatica.
This research was made over drought resistance and optimum soil moisture needed with Plantago asiatica L. as the material by means of making out the process of its growth under different soil moisture contents. The soil used for the experiment was a mixture of vermiculite and c-layer soil, and the process of growth was compared with each other controlling its soil mositure as: 7%, 15%, 30%, 45%, and 60%. In 7% range of soil moisture which was of low content, the increase of growth was neither significantly indicated nor any permanent seeding done. In view of this phenomenon, Plantago asiatica L. appeared to be highly drought-resistant. It was found rising at 30% range and reaching the optimum state at 45% range and falling down at 60% range range. In viw of this fluctuation indicated above, the optimum soil moisture content needed for the growth of Plantago asiatica L. is thought to be between 30% and 60%. It is thought the number of seed per capsule is not affected by the soil moisture content. It is expected an ecotypic variation by the soil moisture content will bring forth upon Plantago asiatica L.

The imports of Centella asiatica L. Urban are increasing year-by-year due to the fact that its extract is a raw material used for skin wounds and in cosmetics. However, studies on the cultivation and identification of native C. asiatica species in Korea have been extremely rare. Therefore, this study was conducted in order to investigate the physiological and functional activity of Korean native C. asiatica plant cultivated in Hapcheon, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea. As a result, the highest antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities were examined with methanol extract while skin-whitening and wrinkle improvement were examined with water extract. Seven bacterium and one fungus were treated with 50% methanol extracts of C. asiatica and most of the bacterium showed similar or low levels of antibacterial activity compared to the control group of Omiza (Schisandra chinensis) extract, except for Streptococcus pyogenes, which showed higher antimicrobial activity than that of Omiza extract. However, neither C. asiatica and Omiza extracts showed antimicrobial activity against the fungus, C. albicans. The results of anti-inflammatory effect analyses with Raw 264.7 cells confirmed that the treatment of methanol extract reduced the level of NO by 50% or more compared to the control group. In addition, the water extract showed the highest reduction of melanin content of up to 20% more than the control group when examined with B16F10 cell line, indicating a significant skin-whitening effect. Furthermore, we were able to show the significant skin wrinkle improvement caused by C. asiatica extract with NHDF cell as an indicator, but strong cytotoxicity was also observed, suggesting that further studies are necessary.
This study was performed to investigate the increasing of immune activities from Centella asiatica L. Urban by several solvent extraction with ultrasonification process. Ethanol extracts at $60^{\circ}C$ and associated with ultrasofication showed more 15% yield than normal $100^{\circ}C$ water extracts. And ethanol extracts showed higher yield than water extraction at each process. It can be concluded that yield due to polarity of compound in C. asiatica from HPLC peak. All of extracts from C. asiatica revealed lower cytotoxicity than 32%. The ethanol extracts with ultrasofication showed higher promotion on human B and T cell growth, about 10% compared to the control. The secretion of IL-6 and TNF-a was also enhanced as $4.86\;{\times}\;10^{-4}\;pg/cell$ and $5.73\;{\times}\;10^{-4}\;pg/cell$ each, by the addition ethanol extracts with ultrasonification to T cell. NK cell activation was improved up to 10% higher than the control, through adding the samples. It can be concluded that the ethanol extracts from C. asiatica has higher immune activities followed by ultrasonification process, possibly, by higher yield than conventional extraction process.
