  • $Al/SiC/Al_{2}O_{3}$ hybrid composites are fabricated by squeeze infiltration method. From the misconstructive of $Al/SiC/Al_{2}O_{3}$ hybrid composites fabricated by squeeze infiltration method, uniform distribution of reinforcements and good bondings are found. Hardness value of $Al/SiC/Al_{2}O_{3}$ hybrid composites increases linearly with the volume fraction of reinforcement because SiC whisker and $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$ fiber have an outstanding hardness. Optimal aging conditions are obtained by examining the hardness of $Al/SiC/Al_{2}O_{3}$ hybrid composites with different aging time. Tensile properties such as Young's modulus and ultimate tensile strength are improved up to 30% and 40% by the addition of reinforcements, respectively. Failure mode of $Al/SiC/Al_{2}O_{3}$ hybrid composites is ductile on microstructural level. Through the abrasive wear test and wear surface analysis, wear behaviour and mechanism of 6061 aluminum and $Al/SiC/Al_{2}O_{3}$ hybrid composites are characterized under various testing conditions. The addition of SiC whisker to $Al/SiC/Al_{2}O_{3}$ composites gives rise to improvement of the wear resistance. The wear resistance of $Al/SiC/Al_{2}O_{3}$ hybrid composites is superior to that of Al/SiC composites. The wear mechanism of aluminum alloy is mainly abrasive wear at low speed range and adhesive and melt wear at high speed range. In contrast, that of $Al/SiC/Al_{2}O_{3}$ hybrid composites is abrasive wear at all speed range, but severe wear when counter material is stainless steel. As the testing temperature increases, wear loss of aluminum alloy decreases because the matrix is getting more ductile, but that of $Al/SiC/Al_{2}O_{3}$ hybrid composites is hardly varied. Oil lubricant is more effective to reduce the wear loss of aluminum alloy and $Al/SiC/Al_{2}O_{3}$ hybrid composites at high speed range.

  • $SiC_f$/SiC composites with whiskers and pyrolytic carbon (PyC) coated whiskers in the matrix were fabricated for enhancement of the fracture behaviors by the whisker growing assisted chemical vapor infiltration (WA-CVI) process, respectively. $SiC_f$/SiC composites were also prepared by the conventional CVI process as reference material. The mechanical properties and fracture behaviors were analyzed by comparison of the two types of composites prepared by WA-CVI and conventional CVI. The densities of $SiC_f$/SiC composites were in the range of $2.6{\sim}2.65g/cm^3$. The flexural strengths of composite with whiskers and with those coated by PyC were 650 MPa and 600 MPa, respectively. The tensile strength of composites with whiskers was ${\sim}285$ MPa.

  • Mechanical properties of carbon coated $SiC_f/SiC$ composites have been investigated, in conjunction with a detailed analysis of microstructure. Especially, the fracture behavior of $SiC_f/SiC$ composites by the induction of carbon coating layers has been examined. The matrix region of $SiC_f/SiC$ composites with ultra-fine SiC powders were consolidated by a liquid phase sintering (LPS) process, using a sintering additive of $Al_2O_3-Y_2O_3$ powder compound. In this composite, plain and satin- woven Tyranno SA fabrics were also utilized as a reinforcing material. A carbon interfacial layer was coated around satin-woven SiC fabrics. The characterization of LPS-$SiC_f/SiC$ composites was investigated by means of SEM and three point bending test.

  • This study investigates the macroscopic wear behaviors of C/C and C/C-SiC composites coated with hafnium carbide (HfC). To improve the wear resistance of C/C composites, low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) was used to obtain HfC coating. The CVD coatings were deposited at various deposition temperatures of 1300, 1400, and $1500^{\circ}C$. The effect of the substrate material (the C/C substrate, the C/C-CVR substrate, or the C/C-SiC substrate deposited by LSI) was also studied to improve the wear resistance. The experiment used the ball-on-disk method, with a tungsten carbide (WC) ball utilized as an indenter to evaluate the wear behavior. The HfC coatings were found to effectively improve the wear resistance of C/C and C/C-SiC composites, compared with the case of a non-coated C/C composite. The former showed lower friction coefficients and almost no wear loss during the wear test because of the presence of hard coatings. The wear scar width was relatively narrower for the C/C and C/C-SiC composites with hafnium coatings. Wear behavior was found to critically depend on the deposition temperature and the material. Thus, the HfC-coated C/C-SiC composites fabricated at deposition temperatures of $1500^{\circ}C$ showed the best wear resistance, a lower friction coefficient, and almost no loss during the wear test.

  • The influences of ZrB$_2$ additions to SiC on microstructural, DDM(Electrical Discharge Machining), mechanical and electrical properties were investigated. composites were prepared by adding 15, 30, 45 vol.% ZrB$_2$particles as a second phase to SiC matrix. SiC-ZrB$_2$ composites obtained by hot pressing for high temperature structural application were fully dense with the relative densities over 99%. The fracture toughness of the composites were increased with the ZrB$_2$contents. In case of composite containing 30vol.% ZrB$_2$, the flexural strength and fracture toughness showed 45% and 60% increase, respectively compared to that of monolithic SiC sample. The electrical resistivities of SiC-ZrB$_2$ composites decreased significantly with the ZrB$_2$ contents. The electrical resistivity of SiC-30vol.% ZrB$_2$ composite showed 6.50$\times$10$^{-4}$ $\Omega$.cm. Cutting velocity of EDM of SiC-ZrB$_2$ composites are directly proportional to duty factor of pulse width. Surface roughness, however, are not all proportional to pulse width. Higher-flexural strength composites show a trend toward smaller crater volumes, leaving a smoother surface; the average surface roughness of the SiC-ZrB$_2$ 15 vol.% composite with the flexural strengthe of 375㎫ was 3.2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, whereas the SiC-ZrB$_2$ 30.vol% composite of 457㎫ was 1.35${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. In the SEM micrographs of the fracture surface of SiC-ZrB$_2$ composites, the SiC-ZrB$_2$ two phases are distinct; the white phase is the ZrB$_2$and the gray phase is the SiC matrix. In the SEM micrographs of the EDM surface, however, these phases are no longer distinct because of thicker recast layer of resolidified-melt-formation droplets present. It is shown that SiC-ZrB$_2$ composites are able to be machined without surface cracking.

  • The effect of the additives, $Y_2O_3$ and MgO, on the sintering and properties of $Al_2O_3-TiC$ composites was investigated. It is known that MgO is used as additive for improving densification and $Y_2O_3$ is applied as sintering aid. In this study, the amounts of TiC were varied in the range of 30-47 wt%. The 0.5 wt% MgO and also varied amounts of $Y_2O_3$ from 0.3 to 1 wt% were added into the composites. The sintering of $Al_2O_3-TiC$ composites was performed in a graphite-heating element furnace at different sintering temperature, 1700 and $1900\;^{\circ}C$, for 2 hr under an argon atmosphere. The results demonstrated that the properties of the composites sintered at $1700\;^{\circ}C$ were much better than those sintered at $1900\;^{\circ}C$. The comparisons on physical properties, mechanical properties and microstructure of composites with and without additives were reported. Comparing with other samples, $Al_2O_3-30wt%TiC$ composites with 0.5wt% MgO and $1\;wt%Y_2O_3$ exhibited the highest density of approximately 98% of theoretical and flexural strength of 302 MPa.

  • By using an oxynitride glass as a sintering additive, the effects of BN content on microstructure and mechanical properties of the hot-pressed and subsequently annealed SiC-BN composites were investigated. The microstructures developed were analyzed by image analysis. The morphology of SiC grains was strongly dependent on BN content in the starting composition. The aspect ratio of SiC decreases with increasing BN content and the average diameter of SiC shows a maximum at 5 wt% BN and decreases with increasing BN content in the starting powder. The fracture toughness increased with increasing BN content while the strength decreased with increasing BN content. The strength and fracture toughness of SiC or SiC-TiC composites were strongly dependent on the morphology of SiC grains, but the strength and fracture toughness of SiC-BN composites were strongly dependent on BN content rather than morphology of SiC grains. These results suggest that fracture toughness of SiC ceramics can be tailored by manipulating BN content in the starting composition. Typical fracture toughness and strength of SiC-10 wt% BN composites were 8 MPa$.$m$\^$1/2/ and 445 MPa, respectively.

  • [ $C_f/C-Cu$ ]composites were fabricated by infiltrating molten Cu into different $C_f/C$ preforms prepared by chemical vapor infiltration, resin impregnation and carbonization. The microstructure and properties of the composites were investigated. The results show that Cu in the composites filled the pores and showed network-like distribution. Compared with homemade J204 brush material and certain grade pantograph slider from abroad, the composites have higher flexural strength and better electrical conductivity. The friction and wear properties of the composites are better than that of J204, and closed to that of the abroad material.

  • The $\beta$-SiC+ZrB$_2$ and $\beta$-SiC+TiB$_2$ceramic electroconductive composites were pressureless-sintered and annealed by adding l2wt% A1$_2$ $O_3$+Y$_2$ $O_3$(6 : 4wt%) powder as a function of sintering temperature. The relative density showed highest value of 84.92% of the theoretical density for SiC-TiB$_2$ at 190$0^{\circ}C$ sintering temperature. The phase analysis of the composites by XRD revealed of $\alpha$-SiC(6H), TiB$_2$, $Al_{5}$Y$_2$ $O_{12}$ and $\beta$-SiC(15R). Flexural strength showed the highest of 230 MPa for SiC-ZrB$_2$ composites sintered at 190$0^{\circ}C$. The vicker's hardness increased with increasing sintering temperature and showed the highest for SiC-ZrB$_2$ composites sintered at 190$0^{\circ}C$. Owing to YAG, the fracture toughness showed the highest of 6.50 MPa . m$^{1}$2/ for SiC-ZrB$_2$ composites at 190$0^{\circ}C$. The electrical resistivity was measured by the Rauw method from $25^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$. The electrical resistivity of the composites showed the PTCR(Positive Temperature Coefficient Resistivity).).

  • The characterization of monolithic SiC and SiCf/SiC composite materials fabricated by NITE and RS processes was investigated in conjunction with the detailed analysis of their microstructure and density. The NITE-SiC based materials were fabricated, using a SiC powder with average size of 30 nm. RS- SiCf/SiC composites were fabricated with a complex slurry of C and SiC powder. In the RS process, the average size of starting SiC particle and the blending ratio of C/SiC powder were $0.4\;{\mu}m$ and 0.4, respectively. The reinforcing materials for /SiC composites were BN-SiC coated Hi-Nicalon SiC fiber, unidirectional or plain woven Tyranno SA SiC fiber. The characterization of all materials was examined by the means of SEM, EDS and three point bending test. The density of NITE-SiCf/SiC composite increased with increasing the pressure holding time. RS-SiCf/SiC composites represented a great decrease of flexural strength at the temperature of $1000\;^{\circ}C.$
