Dissimilar joining of AI 6013-T4 alloys and austenite stainless steel was carried out using friction stir welding technique. Microstructures near the weld zone and mechanical properties of the joint have been investigated. Microstructures in the stainless steel side and AI alloy were depended on the thermo-mechanical condition which they received. TEM micrographs revealed that the interface region was composed of the mixed layers of elongated stainless steel and ultra-fine grained AI alloy and intermetallic compound layer which was identified as the $Al_{4}Fe$ with hexagonal close packed structure. Mechanical properties were lower than those of 6013 AI alloy base metal, because tool inserting location was deviated to AI alloy from the butt line, which resulted in the lack of the stirring.

The Friction Stir Welding (FSW) has mainly been used for making butt joints in Al alloys. The development of Friction Stir Lap Welding (FSLW) would expand the number of applications. In this study, for effective application on thin aluminum alloy lap joint, non-heat treatment A5052 alloys were joined by FSLW with the length of probe 2.3 mm and 3.0 mm. Investigating the characteristics of joint area showed the results were as below ; When the length of probe was 2.3 mm, good joint area was formed at all welding condition except for 600 rpm-700 mm/min. In the case of 3.0 mm probe length, there was formed good joint area without defects at 1500 rpm-100 mm/min. The width of joint area, position and size of defects were very important factors for FSLW, due to heat input and stirring intensity.
The proportion of the welding in the production process of machinery, buildings and marine structures is increasing and the joining are mainly conducted by butt and fillet weld. In the case of fillet weld, the shape of structures is complicated depending on the constraint on the geometry of the structures, therefore, the full penetration is mostly difficult. Accordingly, it is necessary to establish safe and economical criteria of design of the structures through the strength based on the penetration state of the fillet weld. Patterns of fatigue failure in cruciform fillet weld jont appear in the form of the root, toe and mixed failure. In the case of toe and mixed failure, the fatigue strength is higher than root failure. Therefore, we have to make the enough depth of penetration or perform the welding work through improving the fatigue strength of cruciform joints in welded structures. So it is necessary to optimize the penetrated depth in the range of the possible mixed failure and find the way in the cost-effective design to lessen the amount of the welding work.

Burr grinding, Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) dressing, ultrasonic impact treatment, and peening are used to improve fatigue life in steel structures. These methods improve the fatigue life of weld joints by hardening the weld toe, by improving the bead shape, and by creating the compressive residual stress. In this study, a new post-weld treatment method improving the weld bead shape and metal structure at the welding zone using Friction Stir Processing (FSP), a welding process, is proposed to enhance fatigue life. For that, a pin-shaped tool and processing condition employing Friction Stir Processing (FSP) is established through experiments. Experimental results revealed that fatigue life is improved by around 50% compared to as-welded fatigue specimens by reducing the stress concentration at the weld toe and by generating a metal structure finer than that of flux-cored arc welding (FCAW).

An attempt was made to develop commercially pure titanium frames of glasses with a high-precision laser beam welding machine, in which a resonator with 12kw of the peak power and 200 W of maximum mean power has the capacity of variable in the range of 0.08~10 ms pulse width. In addition the optical fiber beam transmission with 400 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of the core diameter and a weld chamber to contain specimens in the inert gas atmosphere were also designed and used. In the present study. titanium frames of glasses parts such as temple plus spring hinge. bridge and top bar were experimentally manufactured by utilizing the optimum welding parameters with the optical fiber of GI 400 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, 2.9J energy per pulse, and focussing position for Tee and butt joints. The titanium welded joints with laser beam welding did not reveal any severe weld defects or weld bead appearance except some pores in the weld section.

To evaluate the applicability of dissimilar joining between Mg and Al alloys in automobile manufacturing process, solid state joining processes such as magnetic pulse welding(MPW), friction stir welding(FSW) and friction spot joining(FSJ) were attempted successfully. MPW process has been concentrated mainly on round section tube to tube and tube to bar welds. AZ31 Mg alloy has been successfully welded to pure Al A1070 as well as to Al alloy A3003. While, for friction stir welding of dissimilar sheet joints, AZ31B/A6061 with the thickness of 2mm were used and a square butt joint with a good quality was obtained at the conditions of 0.8mm/sec of travel speed and tool rotation speed of 850rpm. The maximum tensile strength of 179 MPa, which was about 80 % of the Mg base metal tensile strength, has been obtained. Finally, friction spot joining was attempted to make a dissimilar lap joint between AZ31(0.8mm) and A6061(1mm), while the joint exhibited the same level of tensile shear strength as that of similar Mg joint.

For the research on the fatigue fracture behavior in the welded joints of steel structures, base metal specimens and welded ones were selected, and the direct fatigue tests were carried out. Thereafter, fatigue-life (S-N) curves, plastic strain-number of cycles (${\varepsilon}_p$-N) curve, the extrapolated fatigue-life (${\varepsilon}_p$-$N_c$) curve, and da/dN-${\Delta}K$ curves were plotted. By these results the followings were obtained. It was shown that the ratio of fatigue strength at $2{\times}10^6$ cycles of the welded specimen to that of the base metal one was 0.6, and that 0.72 for the base metal and 0.65 for the welded one were the ratio of fatigue strength at $2{\times}10^6$ cycles to yielding stress. The S-N curve for the welded specimen was separated into two sections, the low gradient section and the steep section. As this result, it was shown that the more stress became to reduce, the more the reduction of fatigue strength became to be great. It was shown that fatigue strength at $2{\times}10^6$ cycles from this case was about 83 % of that from the S-N curve plotted with one section. It was thought that the reason was that weld flaw acted greatly on the fatigue strength within the low stress range. It was shown that at the instart of crack initiation plastic strain increased abrupt1y in the case of the welded specimen more than the case of the base metal specimen, and increased abruptly in the upper stress range in both cases. It was shown that the experimental constant ${\alpha}$, 0.42, in the base metal nearly accorded with Manson-Coffin's result, but this made a great difference with the case in the welded specimen. It was thought that it was due to the abrupt change of plastic strain and the influence of weld flaw.

Reduction of weld distortions and increase in productivity are some of the major goals of the shipbuilding industry. To address these issues, many researchers have attempted to apply new welding processes. In the shipbuilding industry, steel is the candidate material of choice owing to its good weldability. However, conventional welding techniques are not feasible for avoiding welding problems. Tip-rotating arc welding is one of the high-efficiency welding process that has several advantages, such as high welding speed, high melting rate, low heat input, and less distortion. The present study investigates the influence of the welding variables on the weld characteristics of tip-rotating arc welding. Welding was performed using EH36 as the base metal and SM-70s as the filler metal, which are widely used in shipbuilding. Basic experiments were conducted to understand the effects of the major welding variables, such as welding and tip-rotating speeds. The distortion and mechanical properties of the optimal welding conditions were used to evaluate the tip-rotating arc welding performance. Consequently, the feasibility of the tip-rotating arc welding process for joining steel components was investigated, so that the optimized welding conditions could be applied directly to ship body welding to enhance the quality of the welded joints.
In this study, the optimal welding condition of an extruded AZ61 magnesium alloy plate was investigated through evaluation of the mechanical properties and microstructure in the friction stir welding zones. The friction stir welding conditions considered in this study were the tool rotation speeds of 400, 600, and 800rpm and the welding speeds of 200, 300, and 400mm/min. To evaluate the welding strength, tensile and hardness tests were carried out. Microstructures of the welded regions were examined using optical microscopes. Under a tool rotation speed of 800rpm and welding speed of 200mm/min, the joint showed the best joining properties. The UTS, yield strength, and elongation of the welded region showed values of 79.0%, 65.4%, and 30.1%, respectively, of those of the base metal.
On this research, laser welding technology for manufacturing automobile body is studied. Laser welding technology is one of the important technologies used in the manufacturing of lighter, safer automotive bodies at a high level of productivity; the leading automotive manufacturers have replaced spot welding with laser welding in the process of car body assembly. Korean auto manufacturers are developing and applying the laser welding technology using a high output power Nd:YAG laser and a 6-axes industrial robot. On the other hand, the robot-based remote laser welding system was equipped with a long focal laser scanner system in robotic end effect. Laser system, robot system, and scanner system are used for realizing the high speed laser welding system. The remote laser welding system and industrial robotic system are used to consist of robot-based remote laser welding system. The robot-based remote laser welding system is flexible and able to improve laser welding speed compared with traditional welding as spot welding and laser welding. The robot-based remote laser systems used in this study were Trumpf's 4kW Nd:YAG laser (HL4006D) and IPG's 1.6kW Fiber laser (YLR-1600), while the robot systems were of ABB's IRB6400R (payload:120kg) and Hyundai Heavy Industry's HX130-02 (payload:130kg). In addition, a study of quality evaluation and monitoring technology for the remote laser welding was conducted. The welding joints of steel plate and steel plate coated with zinc were butt and lapped joints. The quality testing of the laser welding was conducted by observing the shape of the beads on the plate and the cross-section of the welded parts, analyzing the results of mechanical tension test, and monitoring the plasma intensity and temperature by using UV and IR detectors. Over the past years, Trumf's 4kW Nd:YAG laser and ABB's IRB6400R robot system was used. Nowadays, the new laser source, robot and laser scanner system are used to increase the processing speed and to improve the efficiency of processes. This paper proposes the robot-based remote laser welding system as a means of resolving the limited welding speed and accuracy of conventional laser welding systems.
