S-N fatigue tests were conducted to investigate the fatigue strength of small diameter socket and butt welded joints made of carbon steels. Experimental parameters were pipe diameter, throat depth, shape of socket welds and welding procedure. Filler metals used in SMAW and GTAW procedure were E9016-G with diameter of 4.0 mm and ER70S-G with diameter of 2.4 mm. API 5L Gr.B pipes were adopted as a small diameter branch pipes. All socket fittings were machined from ASTM A105 carbon steel. Tensile strength was not affected by the welding procedure. Fatigue strength in socket weld joints increased with increasing pipe diameter, area of weld metal and weld leg length of pipe side.

A lot of fatigue tests on a material, JIS SM490A, with yielding strength of about 350 MPa and tensile strength of about 520 MPa were carried out. Various butt-welded specimens such as reinforcement removed, as-welded and weld toe ground, several types of fillet-welded specimens and full-size box type components were used. After having obtained S-N curves for the above- mentioned specimens, fatigue strengths were compared to those of foreign design codes, AWS, BS 7608 and ENV. It was found the fatigue strengths at low cycles are not in a good agreement with the foreign codes, but the fatigue limits are in a good agreement.
The problem of residual stresses and fatigue behavior in welded structures is the main concern of welding research fields. The residual stresses and distortions of structures by welding exert negative effect on the safety of mechanical structures. Postweld heat treatment is usually carried out to relieve this residual stresses of welded joints. In this paper the influence of postweld heat treatment on fatigue life of butt-welded joint was investigated. To predict the effect of PWHT, an analytical model is developed by finite element and local strain approach and the result of fatigue life analysis is compared to experimental results. It is demonstrated that fatigue life estimates closely approximate the experimental results and PWHT provides some increase of fatigue lives in long-life fatigue region and no increase in short-life fatigue region because of the residual stress relaxation under tensile loads.

According to our fatigue tests carried out at 20 Hz, R=0.1 on transversely butt-welded joints, fatigue strengths of as-welded specimens, that is, specimens having residual stress are higher than those of annealed specimens in short life range, but vice verse in long life range. This behavior seems to be concerned mainly with residual stress relaxation by applied loading. After analyzing the welding process, we conducted finite element analysis to quantify the degree of residual stress relaxation. By taking into account residual stress relaxation, modified Goodman diagram, and nominal stress, we evaluated the fatigue life of the welded joint from the S-N curve for the parent material. The estimated results are in a good agreement with the experimental results.

A comprehensive review of through thickness transverse residual stress distributions in a range of as-welded and mechanically bent components made up of a range of steels has been carried out, and simplified generic transverse residual stress profiles for a plate and pipe components have been proposed. The geometries consisted of welded pipe butt joints, T-plate joints, tubular T-joints, tubular Y-joints and a pipe on plate joints as well as cold bent tubes and pipes. The collected data covered a range of engineering steels including ferritic, austenitic, C-Mn and Cr-Mo steels. Measured residual stress data, normalised with respect to the parent material yield stress, has shown a good linear correlation versus the normalised depth of the region containing the residual stress resulting from the welding or cold-bending process. The proposed simplified generic residual stress profiles based on the mean statistical linear fit of all the data provides a reasonably conservative prediction of the stress intensity factors. Whereas the profiles for the assessment procedures are fixed and case specific, the simple bilinear profiles for the residual stresses obtained by shifting the mean and bending stress from the mean regression line have been proposed and validated.
When material properties depend much on positions in a material or it is difficult to make test specimens from a material or component, an instrumented indentation test described in ISO 14577-1, 14577-2 or KS B 0950 can be used to measure material properties and damage. In this study, first of all, the principals of the instrumented indentation test, KS B 0950 are introduced and yield strengths, tensile strengths and work hardening exponents of base materials, heat affected zones and weld materials are measured. In addition, the influence of post-weld heat treatment on the material properties is investigated. Finally the fatigue lift of butt welded specimens are evaluated by the local strain approach. To calculate local strains and stresses, elasto-plastic finite element analysis is conducted using the measured properties.
Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) is a common practice to join thick plates such as the structural members of large scale offshore structures and very large container ships. The objective of this study was to investigate the mechanical properties and variability of the fatigue crack initiation life in the flux cored arc welded API 2W Gr.50 steel joints typically applied to offshore structures with a focus on the effect of the materials in fatigue crack growth life from the notch root of a compact tension specimen. Offshore structural steel (API 2W Gr.50) plates (60-mm thick) were used to fabricate multi-path flux core arc welded butt welded joints to clearly consider fatigue fractures at the weld zone from the notch. Fatigue tests were performed under a constant amplitude cyclic loading of R = 0.4. The mean fatigue crack initiation life of the HAZ specimen was the highest among the base metal (BM), weld metal (WM), and heat affected zone (HAZ). In addition, the coefficient of variation was the highest in the WMl specimen. The variability of the short fatigue crack growth rates from the notch tips in the WM and HAZ specimens was higher than in BM.
The fatigue crack growth behavior in GTA butt welded joints of Al-Alloy 5052-H38 was examined using Single Edge Notched(SEN) specimens. It is well known that welding residual stress has marked influence on fatigue crack growth rate in welded structure. In the general area of fatigue crack growth in the presence of residual stress, it is noted that the correction of stress intensity factor (K) to account for residual stress is important for the determination of both stress intensity factor range(.DELTA.K) and stress ratio(R) during a loading cycle. The crack growth rate(da/dN) in welded joints were correlated with the effective stress intensity factor range(.DELTA.Keff) which was estimated by superposition of the respective stress intensity factors for the residual stress field and for the applied stress. However, redistribution of residual stress occurs during crack growth and its effect is not negligible. In this study, fatigue crack growth characteristics of the welded joints were examined by using superposition of redistributed residual stress and discussed in comparison with the results of the initial welding residual stress superposition.
