  • Recently, a combination of Business Process Management (BPM) and Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is being recommended as the best approach for automating large business systems. And the need to create meaningful information from daily operational data is increased today. In this paper, we propose a methodology for automating business processes based on the BPM-SOA convergence trend and verify the methodology by implementing the project management business process. BPM-SOA convergence provides higher extensibility and productivity due to the loosely coupled system construction and maintenance. The system has good properties for frequent process changes and reuse of duplicate processes. We then analyze extensibility of the system as new business processes are added to the existing system. We finally analyze the data generated by BPM by using SAP business intelligence to support management's decision making and strategy. Business intelligence provides not only useful data for business decisions but also chance to optimize the business processes.

Research design, data and methodology: The study followed a quantitative approach with a descriptive design. The data was collected from leading e-commerce companies in India using a structured questionnaire, and the data was coded and decoded using MS Excel, SPSS, and R language. It was further tested using Cronbach's alpha, KMO, and Bartlett's test for reliability and internal consistency. Results: The results showed that the big data analytics process acts as a robust mediator between big data analytics capabilities and perceived business performance. The 'direct, indirect and total effect of the model' and 'PLS-SEM model' showed that the big data analytics process directly impacts business performance. Conclusions: A complete indirect relationship exists between big data analytics capabilities and perceived business performance through the big data analytics process. The research contributesto e-commerce companies' understanding of the importance of big data analytics capabilities and processes.

  • A workflow management system is a software system to support accurate execution, control and management of business processes. It has been known that the system automatically executes complex processes and effectively manages them to improve the productivities. However though existing systems assure the automatic execution of an individual process, there is a room for enhancement from the view of efficient execution of all the processes. In this paper, we propose a method of executing business processes efficiently by introducing the PERT/CPM techniques in the workflow management systems. We first consider the differences between workflow process models and PERT/CPM models, and then develop a method of calculating the critical path and slack time in workflow processes. This leads us to develop a dispatching rule that can guide task performers to prioritize their tasks to increase the efficiency of ail the processes. We have carried out a set of simulation experiments and analyzed the results to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • The modeling of business processes is key component of any improvement or re-engineering endeavor. Present trends of business modeling methodologies are to include the social context of an organization. Although various methodologies have been developed specially for the business process field and have a social context, it is not in terms of goals and customers, but processes, activities, and tasks. We describe our stance on business process modeling, based on the viewpoint of goal and customer. First, we formalize a goal-oriented business process model and its evaluation mechanism. Second, we propose a methodology of business process modeling, which starts from perceiving and describing interactions between organization and customer from the customer's viewpoint.

  • With the advances in technology and the trend towards increased computer-based experiential learning in education settings, business games are being increasingly used by business educators. This article utilizes Toulmin's Sensemaking Framework to investigate the sensemaking process of business professionals to reveal how they consciously reason about the value of business games for learning complex business concepts and principles. Using the analysis of responses from 43 business professionals, our study identifies key areas where business professionals find value in business games and the limitations of using business games. First, business games are found to be an effective tool when teaching practical business skill sets to business professionals. Second, business games enhance the overall learning process in professional business training. Third, despite the advantages, some pitfalls in applying business games to practice are found. We also found sub-themes, claims, and argument patterns of how business professionals evaluate the value of business games through a grounded theory qualitative analysis method. Analysis results show several ground-warrant patterns exist in the arguments on values of business games including general principle - causal reasoning, personal experience - generalization, and personal projection - generalization. With these findings, we believe this paper contributes to the theory and practice of business game design, development, and the game playing and learning process.

Groupware is one of information technology that typically work in concert to bring out change in processes. This paper attempts to explain the importance of groupware as a critical information technology for business reengineering by developing a methodology of applying groupware to business reengineering. In order to understand the applicability of groupware to business reengineering, this paper has the following objectives. 1) Examines how the capability of groupware can play as a chang lever or enabler of process innovation explicitly. 2) Propose a integrated business reengineering methodology that incorporates process, process environment and information technologies specifically. A case study was used to provide the insight how groupware can play as a enabler of process innovation. The case was analyzed according to the reengineering methodology we proposed.
