  • Accounting information is essential for users. Useful information helps users to make appropriate investment-related decisions. Segment reporting disclosure plays a practical role for an investor in a business. The article data was surveyed by ordinary least squares to test the effects of corporate governance on the segment reporting disclosure. The article employed time-series data with 136 observations of the top 100 non-financial Vietnamese enterprises listed on the stock exchange in the period of 2018-2019. The research used two popular theories related to stakeholder and agency to explain the effects of factors on segment reporting disclosure. The results have identified two factors that have a positive impact on segment reporting disclosure, namely, the size of the board and the ratio of foreign members to the total number of the board. Accordingly, the managers of the top 100 Vietnamese listed enterprises should increase the number of board members as well as pay attention to the number of foreign members to contribute to improving the information disclosure on the segment reporting. It is the basis to improve the quality of information to ensure completeness and transparency. It contributes to attracting foreign investment to meet the trend of international economic integration.

  • This study examines whether oil and gas companies comply with the requirements of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) 6 on Exploration and Evaluation (E&E) of Mineral Resources. For this purpose, a comprehensive checklist divided into eight different parameters was prepared by including every requirement of IFRS 6. While building on the previous studies, the annual reports of the top five Indian and top five Global companies engaged in this business have been investigated in detail against the checklist using content analysis as the research method. Results show that a majority of the companies (both Indian as well as global companies) have not been complying with the requirements of IFRS 6. In five out of eight parameters the companies have not complied with even half of the requirements. The overall compliance ratio is as low as 41.54 percent and 43.68 percent for Indian and Global companies respectively. While analyzing the non-compliance, it has been observed that despite having distinct accounting standards, different kinds of companies are reporting differently. Thus, it is not in line or consistent with the goal of IFRS i.e., to establish a universal language for the companies to prepare the accounting statements. The research findings identify the exact area of non-compliance while citing the relevant paragraph number of IFRS 6.

  • This research is carried out to investigate the relationship between sustainability practices and performance in a financial sense for Malaysian Oil and Gas sector. Objectives include to study the state of sustainability disclosure among Malaysian oil and gas companies, to understand if companies that practiced sustainability had better performances to their financial bottom-line and to conduct a data analysis to understand the relationship between Environmental, social and governance performance [represented by the acronym ACSI] and financial performance. Sustainability performance is measured using ACSI checklist, which is an adaptation of the GRI 3.0 by Global reporting initiative while financial performance was measured on financial and profitability parameters namely EBITDA, EPS and PE ratio. Secondary data sources are used which were then converted into a rating scale to develop quantitative data. SPSS 21 is used for the analysis. The result shows that the majority of oil and gas companies in Malaysia had poor performance in terms of sustainability disclosure. On all three chosen profitability parameters, the companies that practiced sustainability were found to perform better than their counterparts that did not. Strong and significant relationship exists between sustainability practices and better financial performance.

  • Purpose - This paper compares current requirements for depreciation accounting from the Financial Accounting Standards Board in America for equity securities and all debt securities with determinable fair value, and disclosure requirements related to the fair value of securities below registered cost with the requirements of the international Financial Reporting Standards Board and accounting standards committee. Research design, data, and methodology - Mini-review statements are examined relating to depreciation of investments in America and the Financial Accounting Standards depreciation of investments in Iran that meet the requirements of international reporting standards and the Iranian Accounting Standards Committee. Results - Accounting rules for depreciation of investments in securities requires a good deal of judgment. In particular, devaluation decisions during the recession and market crisis were controversial, although even with no clear guidelines on devaluation, sometimes such decisions were simple. Conclusions -Companies can choose from formal policies applied uniformly and documentations of interest to provide a summary of the principles and conclusions obtained through disclosure, enabling market participants to assess the entity's conclusions reasonably, thereby easing investor and market worries.

  • With the aim of examining the effects of implementing international financial reporting standards (IFRS) on teaching accounting and auditing at universities and colleges in Vietnam, a case study was conducted at 30 universities, colleges, and 208 lecturers in Vietnam. Next, the study employed the structural model analysis method by PLS_SEM software to process and analyze the collected data. The research results show that: (1) There are eight factors that affect how IFRS is applied to teaching, including the training program, (ii) teaching staff, (iii) IFRS application regulations, (iv) related party requirements, (v) faculty/school administrators, (vi) teaching aids, (vii) IFRS teaching methods, and (iii) students; (2) there are three factors that affect the quality of teaching staff, including applying IFRS to teaching at the university and colleges, (ii) Regulations on the application of IFRS, (iii) Requirements from related parties. At the same time, the study also shows that, regarding the indirect relationships, applying IFRS to teaching does not play an intermediary role in these relationships. However, at the 10% significance level, it was found that there is an indirect relationship between regulations on the application of IFRS by the Ministry of Finance and the quality of teaching staff through the variable applying IFRS to teaching.

  • This study examined the association between key audit matters (KAM) and the cost of debt. Financial records and auditors' reports were used to collect data for the fiscal years 2016 and 2017, which were the first two years after KAM was implemented in Thailand. Samples are listed companies in Thailand, where the financial system is primarily debt-based and external auditors play an important role in maintaining financial reporting quality. The final samples for the two-year period consist of 770 observations. The KAM is measured in three aspects: the number of issues, the number of words, and the readability, while the cost of debt is measured by the ratio of interest expense to total debt. The research finds that the KAM readability is significantly and negatively related to the cost of debt. Meanwhile, the number of issues and words have no significant effect on the cost of debt. The finding suggests that auditors' writing skills play a crucial role in the lending decisions of creditors.

  • The study aims to investigate the relationship between hedging with derivatives and subsequent firm-level stock price crash risk. Our sample consists of KOSPI- and KOSDAQ-listed companies from 2004 to 2014. The total firm-year observation is 4,886. We find that hedging with derivatives is related to greater possibilities of crash risk. The results suggest that the complexity of economic and financial reporting for derivatives may aggravate the company's information opacity, ultimately increasing the crash risk. We contribute to the growing body of literature on hedging with derivatives. Academics and practitioners have debated on whether or not hedging enhances transparency or rather makes the information environment more opaque. Theoretical research on the role of corporate hedging on information environment shows that hedging enhances earnings informativeness. Meanwhile, pieces of anecdotal and empirical evidence show that the economic and financial reporting complexity of derivatives can harm information transparency. Our results shed light on the question of whether and how hedging with derivatives affects information environment by examining the relationship between hedging with derivatives and crash risk. Furthermore, our findings provide useful insights for policymakers and practitioners. Specifically, our results raise a need for a more transparent disclosure on corporate hedging activities with derivatives.

  • Purpose: This study looks at the relevance between discretionary revenue and book-tax differences (hereafter BTDs). While the study of earnings management, which focused on discretionary accruals and real earnings management, has largely made, it has not yet been actively researched on discretionary revenues. Therefore, it was believed that discretionary revenue would expand the preceding study by looking at its relevance to BTD, known as financial reporting quality and measures of tax avoidance. In general, prior research suggested that earnings management make BTDs larger. Thus, the relationship between discretionary revenue and the amount of BTD is predicted positive. Research design, data and methodology: To this end, the method of discretionary revenues was used and BTDs measured in four ways. First, Earnings before income tax - estimated taxable income divided by total asset (BTD). Second is fractional rank variable of BTDs (FBTD). Third is Indicator variable equals 1 if the firm-year has a positive BTD, 0 otherwise (PBTD). Fourth is that Indicator variable equals 1 if the firm-year has a BTDs in top(bottom) quartile, 0 otherwise (LPBTD, LNBTD). 4,251 samples were analyzed in the Korean Security market (KOSPI) from 2003 to 2014. Results Empirical analysis shows that BTDs increases as discretionary revenue increases. These results were equally observed when BTDs was measured as a ranking variable or as a indicating variable. These results indicate that earnings management through the revenue of managers exacerbate the quality of financial reporting. Conclusions: In sum, discretionary revenues can be used as an indicator of making BTDs larger and meaningful as the first study of the Korean capital market where discretionary revenues affect accounting information quality. Investors need to increase interest in discretionary revenues because intervention in financial reporting through revenue accounts by managers can increase information asymmetry and agency costs. This means that studies on discretionary revenues that have been relatively small should be expanded. The results also provide important implications for the relevant authorities and investors. Despite these benefits, however, measurement error problems with estimates still appear as limited points, and prudent interpretations are required, and additional follow-up studies are needed in that variables that are not yet considered in this study may affect our findings.
