  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this paper is to develop a methodology to estimate level of service of arterial including Exclusive Median Bus Lanes. METHODS : On 6 Exclusive Median Bus Lanes routes in Seoul, bus travel time and number of bus-stop per km were investigated. Also whether or not passing lane exists at bus-stop was checked. Based on the data from sites, bus travel time was estimated according to length of segment, number of bus-stop per km and whether or not passing lane exists at bus-stop. RESULTS : A bus travel time table was developed according to length of segment, number of bus-stop per km and whether or not passing lane exists at bus-stop. After bus travel speed and passenger car travel speed is estimated based on each travel time table and length of segment, two speeds are combined with weighted average speed using traffic volume of each lane group. Then weighted average speed is a measure of effectiveness of arterial including Exclusive Median Bus Lanes. CONCLUSIONS : It can be concluded that the proposed methodology can estimate level of service of arterial including Exclusive Median Bus Lanes considering the operation characteristics of Exclusive Median Bus Lanes.

But in spite of the change of latent demand to the bus by the variety of regional structural change, the existing bus route can not supply effective feeder service. For cope with the latent demand to the bus, this study establish a concept that frame of the bus operation and management. This study tackled to evidence this fact by analyzing the bus transport problems in terms of the urban growth, and following issues were discussed: 1) the strategy for improvement of bus operation, 2) the land use control which is appropriate for the public transport network, 3) the economical range to justify the bus operation, 4) the allowance for the private transport mode. On the second part of this study, the difference on the bus operation was compared to determine the range within which the bus operation can be justified. This would provide the direction to improve the management for bus operation and fundamental information to develop the bus operation system.

  • A new bus-invert coding circuit, called Two-bit Bus-Invert Coding (TBIC) is presented. TBIC partitions a bus into a set of two-bit sub-buses, and applies the bus-invert (BI) algorithm to each sub-bus. Unlike ordinary BI circuits using invert-lines, TBIC does not use an invert-line, so that it sends coding information through a bus-line. To transmit 3-bit information with 2 bus-lines, TBIC allows one bus-line to have a mid-level state, called M-state. TBIC increases the performance of BI algorithm, by suppressing the generation of overhead transitions. TBIC reduces bus transitions by about 45.7%, which is 83% greater than the maximum achievable performance of ordinary BI with invert-lines.

  • PURPOSES : This study was initiated to analyze the characteristics of bus traffic accidents, by bus types, using the decision tree in order to establish customized safety alternatives by bus types, including the intra-city bus, rural area bus, and inter-city bus. METHODS : In this study, the major elements involved in bus traffic accidents were identified using decision trees and CHAID algorithm. The decision tree was used to identify the characteristics of major elements influencing bus traffic accidents. In addition, the CHAID algorithm was applied to branch the decision trees. RESULTS : The number of casualties and severe injuries are high in bus accidents involving pedestrians, bicycles, motorcycles, etc. In the case of light injury caused by bus accidents, different results are found. In the case of intra-city bus accidents, the probability of light injury is of 77.2% when boarding a non-owned car and breaching of duty to drive safely are involved. In the case of rural area bus accidents, the elements showing the highest probability of light injury are boarding an owned car, vehicle-to-vehicle accidents, and breaching of duty to drive safely. In the case of intra-city bus accidents, boarding owned car, streets, and vehicle-to-vehicle accidents work as the critical elements. CONCLUSIONS : In this study, the bus accident data were categorized by bus types, and then the influential elements were identified using decision trees. As a result, the characteristics of bus accidents were found to be different depending on bus types. The findings in this study are expected to be utilized in establishing effective alternatives to reduce bus accidents.

  • It is occurred bus arrival time errors when a bus arrives at a bus stop because of a variety of traffic condition such as traffic signal cycle, the time to get on and off a bus, a bus-only lane and so on. In this paper, bus delay time which is occurred as the result of traffic condition was estimated with Markov Chain process and bus arrival time at each bus stop was predicted with it. As the result of the study, it is confirmed to improve accuracy than the method of bus arrival time prediction with existing method (weighed moving average method) in case predicting bus arrival time using 7 by 7 and 9 by 9 matrixes.

  • Many studies on bus scheduling optimization have been done from the 1960s to recent years for establishing rational bus schedule plan that can improve convenience of bus passengers and minimize unnecessary runs. After 2000, as part of the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), the importance of the schedule management and providing schedule information through bus schedule optimization has become a big issue, and much research is being done to develop optimization models that will increase bus passenger convenience and, on the side of bus management, minimize unnecessary bus operation. The purpose of this study is to calculate the optimal bus frequency and create a timetable for each bus stop by applying DTR or DTRC model that use data for each bus stop and route segment. Model verification process was implemented using data collected from bus management system (BMS) and integrated transit-fare card system for bus route of Seoul's No. 472 line. In order to evaluate the reliability and uncertainty of optimal solution, sensitivity analysis was implemented for the various parameters and assumptions used in the bus scheduling model.

But in spite of the change of latent demand to the bus by the variety of regional structural change, the existing bus route can not supply effective feeder service. For cope with the latent demand to the bus, this study establish a concept that frame the feeder bus route design system for changing of the existing bus route or creating of bus route. The concept of feeder bus route design system from this study is not to frame the whole bus network but to frame the single route to a unit OD pair. So, this study have assumption that do not consider the wating time at bus stop and transfer time. This system is consist of three phase. First is limitation of examination road network, second is enumeration of a most suitable route, and final is determination of the optimum bus route. However, a precondition is that the necessary time from the origin to the destination is brief, and having many demand.

  • Punctuality of bus operation can be defined as "timely operation of buses according to their operation schedules." It tis often considered as one of the important measures of bus operation reliability in evaluating bus operation performance from the viewpoint of bus users. Passenger waiting times are severely influenced by the punctuality of bus operations. However, there exist many situations that predetermined schedules cannot be met. In these cases, other definitions of punctuality should be given. This paper is to develop punctuality indexes of bus operation based on various bus operating situations. Bus operation data sampled from Seoul bus system were analyzed to calculate punctuality indexes for a number of bus routes. Then, bus operation punctuality was characterized by various operating conditions. Several interesting results were obtained and explained.

  • Recently, the need to introduce bus lines on a welfare basis is increasing as public intervention in bus routes is accelerated through semi-public bus system. The main objective of this study is to establish the concept of PSO (public service obligation) bus line on a welfare basis and propose a classification method of PSO bus line under semi-public bus system. We introduced 3 indexes such as "equity" in terms of bus line distribution, "publicity" in terms of age distribution, and "profitability" in terms of bus operating revenues. On the basis of 3 indexes, we introduced the PSO bus line, which is fair and public, even if it is not profitable. Based on the concept established in this study, we divided 130 ordinary city bus lines in Busan Metropolitan City into 8 PSO bus lines. Also, considering the positive impact of public buses, which are less profitable, but improve the mobility of residents and secure public community, we suggested the need to introduce public buses in bus service shortage areas.
