Flame Extinguishing Characteristics of Clean Gaseous Agents and Effects of Additives (가스계 청정소화약제의 소화특성과 첨가제에 따른 영향)

  • Halon was known as a cause of the ozone layer destruction. In 1987, it was designated as one of the ozone-layer-destroying materials in the Montreal Protocol. Therefore substitutes of Halon agent has been developed including inert gas extinguish system, which is one of the most widely used fire extinguishing system. This study intended to increase the efficiency of inert gas extinguishing agent by using inert gas additives. As IG-541 shows high extinguishing power, the experiment was performed to measure the effects of gaseous additives to it. Cup-burner fire extinguishing apparatus was used with n-Heptane fuel. Among many of pure inert gaseous agents, Helium showed the most excellent extinguishing power. When Helium was added to IG-541, fire extinguishing power was increased and the concentration of oxygen in chimney also risen. By adding Helium to IG-541, the effectiveness of inert gas fire extinguishing system is able to be increased.

Fire Extinguishing Ability of Binary Gaseous Extinguishing Agents Evaluated by Cup Burner and Numerical Studies (이성분계 가스계소화약제 소화성능의 컵버너실험 및 이론적 고찰)

  • The search for a new fire-extinguishing agent with all the desirable properties of halon 1301 has not been successful. To study binary gaseous extinguishing agents instead, one has to determine the extinguishing concentrations for several compositions of a given chemical in an inert gas. This process is expensive and time consuming. The fire suppression efficiencies of gas mixtures of HFC 125 and HFC 227ea with nitrogen as total flooding agents were studied by cup burner method. It was shown that addition of small amounts of those extinguishants to nitrogen can enhance the suppression effectiveness of the inert gas. As expected, the degree of synergism was highest at low concentrations of the chemical. For each binary system, extinguishing concentrations of the pure compounds and one binary data were used to predict the extinguishing concentrations for the entire range of binary composition. The predicted values were very close to experimental data.

Experimental testing and evaluation of coating on cables in container fire test facility

  • Fire tests were conducted on cables using fire-retardant paint employed in nuclear power plants that transmit electrical power, control and instrument signals. The failure criteria of various power and control cables coated with fire retardant coating at three different coating thicknesses (~0.5 mm, 1.0 mm & 1.5 mm) were studied under direct flame test using Container Fire Test Facility (CFTF) based on standard tests for bare cables. A direct flame fire test was conducted for 10 min with an LPG ribbon burner rated at ten by fixing the cable samples in a vertical cable track. Inner sheath temperature was measured until ambient conditions were achieved by natural convection. The cables are visually evaluated for damage and the mass loss percentage. Cable functionality is ascertained by checking for electrical continuity for each sample. The thickness of cable coating on fire exposure is also studied by comparing the transient variation of inner sheath temperature along the Cable length. This study also evaluated the adequacy of fire-retardant coating on cables used for safety-critical equipment in nuclear power plants.

The Applicable Investigation of Response Surface Methodology(RSM) for the Prediction of the Ignition Time, the Heat Release Rate and the Maximum Flame Height of the Interior Materials (내장재의 발화시간, 열방출율 및 최대화염 높이의 예측을 위한 반응표면방법론의 활용성 고찰)

  • The aim of this study is to predict the ignition times and the HRR(heat release rate) for building interior materials. By using the literature data and RSM(response surface methodology), the new equations for predicting the ignition time and the HRR of building interior materials are proposed. The A.A.P.E.(average absolute percent error) and the A.A.D.(average absolute deviation) of the reported and the calculated ignition times by means of the thickness and the density were 4.35 sec and 1.57 sec, and the correlation coefficient was 0.987. The correlation coefficient of the reported and the calculated the net HRR by means of burner width and power was 0.983. Also the correlation coefficient of the reported and the calculated the total HHR by means of burner width and power was 0.999. The correlation coefficient of the reported and the calculated the maximum flame height by means of burner width and power was 0.999. The values calculated by the proposed equations were in good agreement with the literature data.

  • The isothermal flow structure and mixing characteristics of a hybrid/dual swirl jet combustor for micro-gas turbine (MGT) were numerically investigated. Location of pilot burner, swirl angle and direction were varied as main parameters with the identical thermal load. As a result, the variations in location of pilot nozzle, swirl angle and direction resulted in the significant change in turbulent flow field near burner exit, in particular, center toroidal recirculation zone (CTRZ) as well as turbulent intensity, and thus the flame stability and emission performance might be significantly changed. With the comparison of experimental results, the case of swirl angle $45^{\circ}$ and co-swirl flow including optimum location of pilot burner were chosen in terms of the flame stability and emissions for the development of hybrid/dual swirl jet combustor.

A Fire Test Measuring the Heat Release Rate of Railway Car Interior Materials Satisfying the Korean Safety Guideline (안전기준을 만족하는 철도차량 내장재의 화재 열방출율 측정시험)

  • A large-scale fire test was conducted for interior materials from a vehicle installed within a fire test room (ISO 9705). The interior materials are satisfying the Korean guideline for the safety of rail vehicles, where the guideline has taken effect since December 2004 in Korea. The output of ignition source (gas burner) was increased in several controlled steps. The objectives of this test are to assess the fire performance in terms of ignition and flame spread on interior lining materials and to provide data on an enclosure fires involving train interior materials that grow to flashover. These data will be used to develop and calibrate models for fire growth on the interiors of the railway vehicle.

Extinguishing Concentration of Inert Gases in Heptane Pool Fires (헵탄 풀화재에서 불활성기체 소화농도)

  • The coflow velocity effect on the minimum extinguishing concentration(MEC) was investigated experimentally in heptane cup-burner flames. Various inert gases($N_2$, Ar, $CO_2$, He) were added into the oxidizer to find the critical concentration and the effectiveness of the agents on flame extinction. The experimental results showed that the MECs were increased with increasing coflow velocity for most inert gases except helium, but the higher coflow velocity induced the lower burning rates of heptane. This indicated that the increase of coflow velocity resulted in the decrease of fuel velocity evaporated from fuel surface, and hence the stain rate on the reaction zone was also decreased. In the case of helium as a additive, the extinguishing concentration was independent of the coflow velocity because the heat conductivity was ten times larger than the other inert gases and flow effect by a strain rate might be compensated for heat loss to the surroundings.

Numerical Study on Propylene Vertical Wall Fires (프로필렌 수직벽 화재의 수치적 연구)

  • The Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS), a computational fluid dynamics model for fire simulation, was applied to propylene vertical wall fires, to confirm its accuracy in simulation of vertical wall fires. The temperature profiles at the center of the burner obtained for mass loss rates per unit area in the range of $7.0{\sim}29.29g/m^2-s$ were compared with those of experiment. Comparisons of the heat flux distributions along the vertical centerline on the wall surface were made with the measurements. It was shown that the computed temperature profiles were in good agreement with the experiment. It was also noted that the peak temperature near the wall was underpredicted, the heat flux was too high compared with the measurements, and hence improvements are required for FDS in simulation of the vertical wall fires.

  • A series of measurements and visualization to investigate the interaction of water sprays with pool fires is presented. Fire source is a small-scale pool burner with methanol, ethanol and gasoline. Measurements of temperatures, $O_2$, $CO_2$, and CO concentrations along the plume centerline are carried out to observe pool fire structures without water sprays. Visualization by the Ar-ion laser sheet shows flow pattern of droplets of the sprays above the pool fires. It is observed that in the case of methanol and ethanol, water sprays continuously penetrate into the center of fuel surfaces. The gasoline pool fire allows intermittent penetration of water sprays because of pulsating characteristics of the gasoline flame. To evaluate the cooling effect of the fuel surface by the sprays, the temperature was measured at the fuel surface. As soon as the mists reach the fuel surface of methanol and ethanol, the temperatures of the fuel surface decrease rapidly below the boiling point, and then the fires are extinguished. Due to the application of mist upon the gasoline fire, though the fuel temperature decrease abruptly at the time of the injection, such a rapid decrease do not continue till the extinction point.

A Gas Accident Statistics and Analysis (가스사고 통계 및 분석에 관한 고찰)

  • Among the various cases of fire accident, gas accident which is roost essential have a lot of forms and causes. The quantity consumed of gas is increasing because of increment of gas-using families and variations of gas machinery. The quantity consumed of gas in 2007 was 35078 tons and the average rate of increasement was 9.4%. The amount of gas accident was on the peak at 1995 when 557 accidents occurred in a year. In 2007, 123 gas accidents was occurred and the average rate of diminution was 11.5%. Accidents by LP gas took 80% of the whole accident and city gas and high pressure gas took 20%. In case of LP gas, accidents were usually occurred because of lack of blocking after the removal of gas machinery and moveable butane burner. Especially, the accidents cause by carelessness of a provider is increasing. Gas accidents which generate damage of human life and property, are caused by users' carelessness, providers' carelessness, inferiority of structure and old products. In this thesis, We will classify the gas accidents. Furthermore through the classification of accidents by forms, causes and regions, this thesis going to be a reference to understand and prevent the accidents.
