  • In this study, the heat transfer characteristics and NOx and CO emissions of a heat exchanger were investigated using a premixed burner. The experiments involved changing the distance between the burner and heat exchanger to 30, 40, and 50 mm with various equivalence ratios. The results showed that the NOx and CO emissions increased as the equivalence ratio was increased because the flame temperature increased, regardless of the distance between the burner and heat exchanger. In particular, the CO emission increased significantly as the distance between the burner and heat exchanger was decreased. The optimal equivalence ratio for the A-type heat exchanger (distance between the burner and heat exchanger: 30 cm) was 0.7 in the experimental range. In this case, the CO and NOx emissions were 94.5 ppm and 11.2 ppm, respectively, and the efficiency was 84.1%.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the combustion characteristics of dual type of sintering burner as a function of design parameters using lab-scale sintering burner through experimental and numerical approaches. Combustion characteristics were evaluated by the radical method. The numerical model was verified as a temperature using R type of thermocouple at the bed surface. The effect of nozzle distance and angle were performed through the CFD analysis, and the comparison of burner types. As a results, dual type burner has more wider and uniform flame distribution than single type burner. Asymmetry and 45 degree angle condition have been suggested as an optimal condition for the ignition of the sintering bed surface.

  • Experiments have been performed for the burners used in the non-oxidizing direct fired furnaces for the cold rolled plate to investigate the effect of fuel/air mixing patterns of the burner nozzle on flame shape, temperature and combustion gas concentration. CFD simulation has also been performed to investigate the mixing state of air-fuel for a nozzle mixing burner and a partially pre-mixing burner. A partially pre-mixing burner showed that flame temperature increased up to $26^{\circ}C$ on average compared than that of the nozzle mixing. It also showed that the mixing distance is important at the partially pre-mixing burner. Test results for a partially pre-mixing burner showed that the residual oxygen concentration and the volume ratio of $CO/CO_2$ of the flame were applicable to be used in field furnaces.

  • Experimental study is conducted to identify the existence of a shrinking flame disk and to clarify its flame characteristics through the inspection of critical mole fraction at flame extinction and edge flame oscillation at low strain rate flames. Experiments are made as varying global strain rate, velocity ratio, and burner distance. The transition from a shrinking flame disk to a flame hole is verified through gradient measurements of maximum flame temperature. The evidence of edge flame oscillation in flame disk is also provided through numerical simulation in microgravity. It is found at low strain rate flame disks in normal gravity that buoyancy effects are importantly contributing to lateral heat loss to burner rim, and is proven through critical mole fraction at flame extinction, edge flame oscillation, and measurements of flame temperature gradient along flame disk surface.

  • After burner which is main part of inert gas generator(IGG) is studied for the development of IGG. The results of many experimental equations are applied to estimate characteristics of the spray nozzle and evaporation of spray, and selected the optimum design point of after burner. The selected design point of after burner are validated experimentally through the pilot plant of after burner. The flame stability is favorable at design point(150mm), that distance from stabilizer to nozzle. The emission of $NO_x$ and CO is lower than gas turbine combustor which was used in primary combustor.

  • Swirl flow in the gun type burner has an impact on the stabilization of the flame, improvement of the combustion efficiency. The swirl flow is created by the spinner which is inside the airtube that guide the combustion air. Gun type burner has generally the inner devices composed electronic spark plug, injection nozzle, combustion device adaptor, and spinner. These inner components change the air flow behavior passing through airtube. So, this study conducted the measurement using by hot-wire anemometer and analyzed effect of the swirl number of spinner on the exhaust air of gun type burner. Turbulence characteristics come up in this study was mean velocity, turbulence intensity, kinetic energy, shear stress and flattness factor of the air flow with the change of the distance of axial direction and tangential direction from the exit of the airtube.

  • This paper presents the combustion characteristics of hydrocarbon fuel from a conventional pressure-swirl nozzle of a small-scale burner. The nozzle has orifice diameters of 0.256 mm and liquid flow rates ranging from 50 to 64 mL/min were selected for the experiments. The furnace temperature distribution along the axial distance, the gas emission such as CO, $CO_2$, NOx, $SO_2$, flue gas temperature, and combustion efficiency were studied. The local furnace and flue gas temperatures decreased with an increase in air velocity. At injection pressures of 1.1 and 1.3 MPa the maximum furnace temperatures occurred closer to the burner exit, at an axial distance of 242 mm from the diffuser tip. The CO and $CO_2$concentrations decreased with an increase in air velocity, but they increased with an increase in injection pressure. The effect of air velocity on NOx was not clearly seen at low injection pressures, but at injection pressure of 1.3 MPa it decreased with an increase in air velocity. The effect of air velocity on $SO_2$ concentration level is not well understood. The combustion efficiency decreased with an increase in air velocity but it increased with an increase in injection pressure. It is recommended that injection pressure less than 0.9 MPa with air velocity not above 8.0 m/s would be suitable for this burner.

  • The high loading combustion is accomplished by making the turbulent intensity strong and the scale small in the premixed combustor. The Da-mkoler number, which is decreased by short turbulent characteristic time or by long chemical reaction time, can make the distributed reaction flame. So we developed a doubled jet burner for high loading combustion. The doubled jet burner was designed to make the scale of the flame small by the effect of impingement and increasing shear stress with doubled jet. We investigated the turbulence characteristics of unburned mixture and visualized several flames with the typical schlieren photography. Then we studied the influence of several factors that related the scale of flame. Consequently, the doubled jet burner can make the eddy very small. And we can obtain the detail information of the flame scale through ADSF(the Average Distance between Successive Fringes) in the micro- schlieren photography. The ADSF is not a exact flame scale, but it has qualitative trend with increasing turbulent intensity. The ADSF is diminished remarkably with increasing turbulent intensity. The reason is that strong turbulent intensity makes the flame zone thick and flamelets numerous. We can confirm this fact by the signal analysis of ion currents.

  • This paper represents the vector fields, three dimensional mean velocities, the turbulent intensities, the turbulent kinetic energy, and the Reynolds shear stresses in the X-Y plane of gas swirl burner with a cone type baffle plate measured by using X-probe from hot-wire anemometer system. This experiment is carried out at flow rates 350 and 450ℓ/min respectively, which are equivalent to the combustion air flow rate necessary for heat release 15,000 kcal/hr in gas furnace, in the test section of subsonic wind tunnel. The vector plot shows that the maximum axial mean velocity component exists in the narrow slits situated radially on the edge of gas swirl burner, for that reason, there is some entrainment phenomena of ambient air in the outer region of burner. Moreover, mean velocities in the initial region are largely distributed near the outer region of burner at Y/R≒0.97, but they diffuse and develop into the center flow region of burner according to the increase of axial distance. The turbulent intensities and the turbulent kinetic energy due to large inclination of mean velocity and swirl effect show that the maximum value in the initial region of burner is formed in the narrow slits situated radially on the edge of gas swirl burner and large values are mainly formed in the entire region of burner after X/R=2.4358, hence, the combustion reaction is anticipated to occur actively near this region. And the Reynolds shear stresses are also largely distributed from slite to vanes of gas swirl burner in the intial region, but their values largely disappear after X/R=3.2052.
