  • $MgB_2$ superconducting sheets have been fabricated by powder rolling method using mixture of Mg and B powders. Sheet-type $MgB_2$ bulk samples of ~10 mm width and 50-100 mm long were squeezed out after compacted by two rotating rolls of 130 mm diameter with gap distance of 0.5 mm and speed of ~40 cm/min (~1 rpm). The nominal composition of Mg, which is ductile metal, was added up to 30% to facilitate forming the $MgB_2$ sheets. The annealed samples at $900^{\circ}C$ and 3 hrs showed superconducting transition temperature of ~32 K and critical current densities at zero fields were ${\sim}10^5A/cm^2$ at 5 K and ${\sim}5{\times}10^4A/cm^2$ at 20 K.

  • Sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy has recently been used to investigate the surface of the various polymers and was able to find the chemical compositions and structures specific to the surface. Here we report our studies on two specific polymer samples to demonstrate its capability. Polyimide thin films were made by spin coating on fused quartz and $CaF_2$ substrates. The sum-frequency signal originating mainly from the air/polymer interface showed markedly different spectra, indicating the structural change of the polymer surface depending on the underlying substrate. Various polyethylene surfaces were also investigated by sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy. The surface of polyethylene samples in the CH-region showed different sum-frequency spectra, presumably due to the trace amount of additives having much higher concentration at the air/polymer interface. These examples demonstrate the surface and interface of the polymer could have different structure and chemical composition from those of a bulk, which can be studied effectively by surface nonlinear optical spectroscopy.

  • This paper describes the factors which control the impedance-relative humidity characteristics of the TiO2-V2O5 humidity sensor. To obtain the quantitative relationships between impedance and many manufacturing parameters such as V2O5mol%, the sintering time and temperature, various sets of samples are preared and tested. With changing relative hymidity from 20% to 80%, it is measrued that the corresponding capacitance and impedance from the semicircles which complex impedance plots make. As a result we found that the impedance-relative humidity characteristics are mainly controlled by the doping amount of V2O5 total pore volume and bulk resistence of the elements. We can assume the equivalent circuits of each samples and finally control the sintering time to get a linear humidity impedance response curve which plays an important role in device making. 4mol% V2O5-TiO2 specimen sintered at 90$0^{\circ}C$ for 10min. show liear log(Z) vs. RH characteristics and 10mol% V2O5-TiO2 specimen sintered at the same temp. for 20min. show linear (Z) vs. RH.

  • Porous SiC samples were prepared with three types of wood (poplar, pine, big cone pine) by simply embedding the wood charcoal in a powder mixture of Si and $SiO_2$ at 1600 and $1700^{\circ}C$. The basic engineering properties such as density, porosity, pore size and distribution, and strength were characterized. The samples showed full conversion to mostly $\beta$-SiC with good retention of the cellular structure of the original wood. More rigid SiC struts were developed for $1700^{\circ}C$. They showed similar bulk density ($0.5{\sim}0.6\;g/cm^3$) and porosity (81~84%) irrespective of the type of wood. The poplar sample showed three pore sizes (1, 8, $60\;{\mu}m$) with a main size of $60\;{\mu}m$. The pine sample showed a single pore size ($20\;{\mu}m$). The big cone pine sample showed two pore sizes (10, $80\;{\mu}m$) with a main size of $10\;{\mu}m$. The bend strength was 2.5 MPa for poplar, 5.7 MPa for pine, 2.8 MPa for big cone pine, indicating higher strength with pine.

  • Oxidation resistance of sintered ${\beta}-FeSi_{2}$ was investigated at intermediate temperature range in air atmosphere. Fully dense and porous bodies of ${\beta}-FeSi_{2}$ samples were fabricated by using the Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS). They were annealed at $900^{\circ}C$ for 5days to obtain ${\beta}-FeSi_{2}$ phase. The bulk samples were oxidized at $800,\;900\;and\;950^{\circ}C$ in air atmosphere. The high temperature oxidation tests reveal that amorphous $SiO_{2}$ layer, similar to Si was formed and grew parabolically on ${\beta}-FeSi_{2}$. Accelerated oxidation is not observed as well as cracks and grain boundary oxidation. Granular ${\varepsilon}-FeSi$ was developed below the oxide layer as a result of oxidation of ${\beta}-FeSi_{2}$. Oxidation resistance of sintered ${\beta}-FeSi_{2}$ was excellent for high-temperature thermoelectric application.

  • Depositional environment off the Shihwa Dam has been studied to investigate the change of sedimentation process and the pollution. In order to understand how the sediments are distributed, polluted and modified, depositional factors have been analyzed and compared with the previous data. Study area, located off the Shihwa Dam, was surveyed to collect 25 bottom samples and 2 cores in 1996 and echo-sounding in 1997. These sediments were analyzed for the study of the global characteristics of sediment such as grain size and organic matter. Among these samples, the selected twenty surface sediments were analyzed for the comparison with their contents of metallic elements (Al, Mn, Fe, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, As). According to field and lab analysis of sediments, three sedimentological zones have been generally identified around study area; near the dam (sandy Silt), near the dike (Sand) and offshore (silty Sand) zones. Textural parameters show that the content of silt and clay is dominant near the dam excepting the dike zone of LNG Storage Base and offshore (Palmido). The total concentration of Mn, Ni, Fe, Zn and Cd in bulk sediments was increased after the construction of the dam, while the content of Mn and Cr were higher near tidal channel than in the offshore area. Meanwhile, the annual increasing pattern of some heavy metal has appeared in this area. Based on this primary study, modification of the depositional environment may be caused by the construction of the dam and LNG Storage Base. Additionally, environmental evaluation on organic/inorganic factors has been suggested for interpreting environmental changes caused by coastal development in the nearshore such as the Shihwa coastal area.

  • Several vermiculite deposits occur as the alteration product from phlogopite in ultramafic rock, in the Hongseong and Cheongyang area, South Korea. Some quarries show well-defined weathering profile. Samples collected from those quarries were examined by XRD and chemistry to define a vertical variations in mineralogy and chemistry of the weathering profile developed on ultramafic rocks. The analysis by X-ray diffractometry showed that mineral compositions changed continuously as depth of profile increasing, the vermiculite-the phlogopite/vermiculite interstratified-the phlogopite. Chemical analysis of bulk samples in altered zone revealed that regardless of composition and kinds of mineral in the rock, there are significant increase of MgO, CaO and $H_2O$, and decrease of K as depth of profile decrease reflecting the characteristics in vermiculitization. Also, there was a tendency that weathering indicies of each sample horizon change gradually with increasing depth. This tendency can be explained as variations of degree of vermiculitization. The regular changes of mineralogical and chemical composition in vertical profile suggest that weathering is the most important process in vermiculitization in this area.

  • Textured bulk $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ superconductors samples were grown directionally using different precursors of $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ power. and a mixture of $YBa_2Cu_3O_5, BaCuO_2 and CuO$ powder. The microstructures and superconducting properties of the samples were compared. The mixture powder produced better microstructures i.e. dense and crack-free so that a higher critical current density was achieved at the same hot-zone temperature of 115$0^{\circ}C$ than the reacted powder does. When the reacted powder used as a precursor, as the hot-zone temperature increased upto 1215$^{\circ}C$, the texture of the sample improved and the critical current density increased. The amount of melt in the sample is of secondary importance for the growth of superconducting $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ grains. The microstructures and superconductivity of good quality superconductors grown directionally were more strongly influenced by the kind of precursor rather than the amount og melt in a sample.

  • The improvement of preparation process of ${YBa_2}{Cu_3}{O_x}$ superconductor and its conducting properties is important for practical applications. In this study, the additives such as $Ag_{2}O$ and PbO were used to improve the preparation conditions of ${YBa_2}{Cu_3}{O_x}$ superconducting bulk samples and the properties of ${YBa_2}{Cu_3}{O_x}$ superconductors prepared with powders using sol-gel method and solid state reaction method were studied. The effects of the different powders and the additives to the density, grain alignment, and porosity of samples, that affect the critical current density of superconductor, also have been investigated. It is found that the properties of ${YBa_2}{Cu_3}{O_x}$ prepared with sol-gel synthesized powder and the additives showed better superconductivities than those of conventionally prepared superconductors.

  • The sediment geochemistry, including REE of surface and core samples in the western part off Jeju Island have been carried out in order to understand the provenance and hydrolic sorting. The sediment in the study area were primarily composed of coarse silt with a mean grain size of $2.8{\sim}82.8{\mu}m$. The ratios of TOC over total nitrogen (TN) showed that the study area sediments contained more organic matters of marine origin than those of terrigenous origin. The total A1203, Fe203, K20, MgO, and MnO contents and REE concentration of the fine sediments are higher than those of the coarse sediments. The higher Zr/Th and Zr/Yb ratios in coarse sediments relative to fine-grained detritus indicates sedimentary sorting. Grain size influence the REE concentrations of the study area sediment significantly. The < $63{\mu}m$ fraction of the sediment has higher REE concentration and different REE patterns when compared with those in bulk samples, due to the presence of REE-enrich heavy minerals. The REE distribution patterns of the western part of Jeju Island sediments are relatively enriched in most LREEs than the Yellow River sediment and depleted in the Changjiang River, but the LaN/YbN ratios are similar to the Changjiang sediment. The Eu/Eu* ratios ranged from 0.594~0.665(0.631) is much similar to the Yellow River sediment, possibly mixture of the sediments from these two rivers.
