In this paper, the behaviour of axially loaded partially encased composite columns made with light welded H steel shapes is examined using ABAQUS finite element modelling. The results of the numerical simulations are compared to the response observed in previous experimental studies on that column system. The steel shape of the specimens has transverse links attached to the flanges to improve its local buckling capacity and concrete is poured between the flanges only. The test specimens included 14 stubcolumns with a square cross section ranging from 300 mm to 600 mm in depth. The transverse link spacing varied from 0.5 to 1 times the depth and the width-to-thickness ratio of the flanges ranged from 23 to 35. The numerical model accounted for nonlinear stress-strain behaviour of materials, residual stresses in the steel shape, initial local imperfections of the flanges, and allowed for large rotations in the solution. A Riks displacement controlled strategy was used to carry out the analysis. Plastic analyses on the composite models reproduced accurately the capacity of the specimens, the failure mode, the axial strain at peak load, the transverse stresses in the web, and the axial stresses in the transverse links. The influence of applying a typical construction loading sequence could also be reproduced numerically. A design equation is proposed to determine the axial capacity of this type of column.
This paper presents a detailed parametric study, conducted using finite element tools to cover a range of several geometric and material parameters, on the behaviour of thin-walled partially encased composite (PEC) columns. The PEC columns studied herein are composed of thin-walled built-up H-shaped steel sections with concrete infill cast between the flanges. Transverse links are provided between the opposing flanges to improve resistance to local buckling. The parametric study is confined to eccentrically-loaded columns subjected to major axis bending only. The parameters that were varied include the overall column slenderness ratio (L/d), load eccentricity ratio (e/d), link spacing-to-depth ratio (s/d), flange plate slenderness ratio (b/t) and concrete compressive strength ($f_{cu}$). The overall column slenderness ratio was chosen to be the primary variable with values of 5, 10 and 15. Other parameters were varied within each case of L/d ratio. The effects of the selected parameters on the behaviour of PEC columns were studied with respect to the failure mode, peak axial load, axial load versus average axial strain response, axial load versus lateral displacement response, moment versus lateral displacement behaviour and the axial load-moment interaction diagram. The results of the parametric study are presented in the paper and the influences of each of the parameters investigated are discussed.
An investigation of the effectiveness of the interface treatment when column concrete jacketing is performed is presented. Alternative methods of interface connection were used in order to investigate the performance of strengthened concrete columns. These connecting techniques involved roughening the surface of the original column, embedding steel dowels into the original column and a combination of these two techniques. The experimental program included three strengthened specimens, one original specimen (unstrengthened) and one as-built specimen (monolithic). The specimens represented half height full-scale old Greek Code (1950's) designed ground floor columns of a typical concrete frame building. The jackets of the strengthened specimens were constructed with shotcrete. All specimens were subjected to displacement controlled earthquake simulation loading. The seismic performance of the strengthened specimens is compared to both the original and the monolithic specimens. The comparison was performed in terms of strength, stiffness and hysteretic response. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the strengthening methods and indicate that the proper construction of a jacket can improve the behaviour of the specimens up to a level comparable to monolithic behaviour. It was found that different methods of interface treatment could influence the failure mechanism and the crack patterns of the specimens. It was also found that the specimen that combined roughening with dowel placement performed the best and all strengthened columns were better at dissipating energy than the monolithic specimen.

In this study, the local buckling behavior of steel built-up columns, fabricated with grade 800MPa high performance (HSA800), was investigated to verify the suitability of width-to-thickness ratio limits adopted by the current design code. For this purpose, an experimental program was designed and performed for HSA800 steel column specimens with various width-to-thickness ratios. Then the experimental results were compared and verified with finite element analysis results. The parametric analytical studies with various width-to-thickness ratios were also performed to investigate the missing data from the limited experimental studies. From the experimental and analytical studies, It was found that the finite analysis models could reasonably estimate the test results within the 5.3% average differences. The local buckling behaviors of HSA800 steel columns were found to be largely depend on the values of initial imperfection introduced into finite element analyses.
For an axially loaded box-shaped member, the width-to-thickness ratio of the plate elements preferably should not be greater than 40 for Q235 steel grades in accordance with the Chinese code GB50017-2003. However, in practical engineering the plate width-to-thickness ratio is up to 120, much more than the limiting value. In this paper, a 3D nonlinear finite element model is developed that accounts for both geometrical imperfections and residual stresses and the ultimate capacity of welded built-up box columns, with larger width-to-thickness ratios of 60, 70, 80, and 100, is simulated. At the same time, the interaction buckling strength of these members is determined using the effective width method recommended in the Chinese code GB50018-2002, Eurocode 3 EN1993-1 and American standard ANSI/AISC 360-10 and the direct strength method developed in recent years. The studies show that the finite element model proposed can simulate the behavior of nonlinear buckling of axially loaded box-shaped members very well. The width-to-thickness ratio of the plate elements in welded box section columns can be enlarged up to 100 for Q235 steel grades. Good agreements are observed between the results obtained from the FEM and direct strength method. The modified direct strength method provides a better estimation of the column strength compared to the direct strength method over the full range of plate width-to-thickness ratio. The Chinese code and Eurocode 3 are overly conservative prediction of column capacity while the American standard provides a better prediction and is slightly conservative for b/t = 60. Therefore, it is suggested that the modified direct strength method should be adopted when revising the Chinese code.
It is an well-known fact that dynamic properties should be considered in design and maintenance of civil structures undergoing dynamic force such as rail track. For designing of the rail tack structures, dynamic properties of track bed soil such as shear modulus (G) and damping coefficients(D) obtained in small to medium range of shear strain must be known. In general, small size sample of D=5 cm and H=10cm has been used mostly for test convenience. However, ratio of largest particle diameter of the soil to sample diameter is very important and affects to the values of dynamic soil properties in track bed. In this study, an RC/TS test apparatus was built and was run for testing a medium size soil sample that can handle with compacted soil sample up to 10 cm diameter and 20 cm height.

A lattice model of a typical bridge column section is analyzed, and results are presented. The lattice is built as an ensemble of line elements and masses, that can capture strain rate dependency of concrete material. The research mainly breaks up into two parts: First, a micro level analysis of the material is executed, and control parameters of the governing equations are derived by matching the results with the common macroscopic properties of concrete material. Then, the properties exhibited by the micro model, which extends the classical material properties are applied to the mesoscale model. Hence, the analysis of the target structure can be performed. In the mesoscale analysis, ramp-like impulse loads are applied at different velocity, so that the contribution of the material level rate dependency to the global behavior of the structure can be tracked.
Recently, high performance(strength) steels have been utilized to structural materials in buildings and bridges with the demand for high-rise and long-span of main structures. This paper is a series of basic study for the design specification of structural members using high performance steel, material properties of high performance rolled steel building structures. HSA800 was compared with the requirements of Korean Standards(KS) for HSA800. Welded square tube stub columns with variables of width-to-thickness ratios are planned in order to investigate the local buckling behaviors and check the current design limit of width-to-thickness ratio and uniaxial compressive tests are carried out. In addition, the local buckling behaviors of stub columns obtained finite element analysis were compared with those of test results.
Recently, In recognition of outstanding structural performance the use of Concrete Filled steel Tube(CFT) columns has been increased. Research is ongoing that effective use of cross-sectional because steel strength development and rising prices. In this Lab, suggests new shape by Thin steel plates bent to be L-channel welded to form square steel tube to maximize efficiency of the cross section. In addition, since the rib placed at the center of the tube width acts as an anchor; higher load capacity of buckling is acceptable. we have developed New shape welded built-up square tube for broader usability which were bent to be L-shaped and thin Plate each unit member were welded. In order to apply the new shape built-up square columns, we predicted structure behavior, stress distribution with parameter Width thickness ratio. The experimental results presented in standards and even exceed the b/t of the rib anchors installed in the role due to exert enough strength and deformation to improve performance was favorable.
