  • New infrastructures and buildings are being constructed increasingly in congested urban areas, and excavation-induced ground movements often cause distortion and damage to adjacent buildings. Protection of adjacent structures occupies a major part of the cost, schedule and third-party impacts of urban development. To limit damage or mitigate their effects on nearby structures, it is highly important to understand the whole mechanism from excavation to building damage, and to estimate building damage reliably before excavation and provide appropriate measures. This paper investigates the effects of excavation-induced ground movements on nearby structures, considering soil-structure interactions for ground and structures, and a building damage criterion, which is based on the state of strain, is proposed. The criterion is compared with other existing damage estimation criteria and a procedure is finally provided for estimating building damage due to excavation-induced ground movements.

  • A method is presented in this paper to analyze the dynamic response behavior of suspended building structures. The effect of semi-rigid connections that link suspended floors with their supporting structure on structural performance is investigated. The connections, like the restrains in non-structural suspended components, are designed as semi-rigid to avoid pounding and as energy dissipation components to reduce structural response. Parametric study is conducted to assess the dynamic characteristics of suspended building structures with varying connection stiffness and suspended mass ratios. Modal analysis is applied to identify the two distinct sets of vibration modes, pendulum and bearing, of a suspended building structure. The cumulative modal mass is discussed to ensure the accuracy in applying the method of response spectrum analysis by SRSS or CQC modal combination. Case studies indicate that a suspended building having semi-rigid connections and proper suspended mass ratios can avoid local pounding failure and reduce seismic response.

  • In this study, we propose an innovative lateral force distribution building system between tall buildings by utilizing the difference of moment of inertia, as the alternative design for highly integrated city area. Considering a tri-axial symmetric conditions and boundary conditions for the three-dimensional building structure system, a two-dimensional model is composed. In the proposed indeterminate structural model, important design variables are determined for obtaining minimum horizontal deflections, reactions and bending moments at the ground level of the buildings. Regarding a case of the provided two spatial structures connected to 4 buildings, the optimum location of middle located spatial structure is 45% from the top of the building, which minimize the end moments at the bottom of the buildings. In the considered verification examples, reduced drifts at the top location of the building systems are validated against static wind pressure loads and static earthquake loads. The suggested hybrid building system will improve the safety and reliability of the system due to the added internal truss-dome structures in terms of more than 30% reduced drift and vibration through the development of convergence of tall buildings and spatial structures.

  • The vibration on building structures due to exciting vibration forces has been studied only for the vibration level on existing buildings. Recently, several researches have been performed on the prediction of vertical vibration on structures by using an analytical method. However, these studies have been focused on mainly the vibration analysis through analytical modeling of structures. This study aims to investigate the dynamic characteristics of vertical vibration transfer from lower stories to upper ones on the Rahmen building structures due to traffic loads. In order to examine the characteristics of vertical vibration transfer, the mode analysis and the impact experiment were conducted several times on one building structures. The results of this study suggest that the characteristics of vertical vibration transfer are different in terms of the type of trains.

  • The pushover analysis is becoming a popular tool for seismic design of building structures. In this paper the state-of-art on static nonlinear analysis of building structures is presented with the emphasis on the effects of analysis parameters; i. e., lateral load patterns, modeling of members, and analysis computer programs. The analysed results may have variation even if a same structure is analysed. This paper is to investigate how large the variation is and what the main causes of the variation are. The difference of analysed results, the resultant variation of lateral story shear force and flexural strength of structural members are discussed. The pushover analysis procedure are routinely used in the seismic design of building structures, but some problems must yet be clarified, such as the effects to evaluate the parameters of analysis on the basis of a lateral load patterns and modeling of members.

  • Building structures generally have inherent low damping capability and hence are vulnerable to seismic excitations. Control devices therefore play a useful role in providing safety to building structures subject to seismic events. In recent years semi-active dampers have gained considerable attention as structural control devices in the building construction industry. Magneto-rheological (MR) damper, a type of semi-active damper has proven to be effective in seismic mitigation of building structures. MR dampers contain a controllable MR fluid whose rheological properties vary rapidly with the applied magnetic field. Although some research has been carried out on the use of MR dampers in building structures, optimal design of MR damper and combined use of MR and passive dampers for real scale buildings has hardly been investigated. This paper investigates the use of MR dampers and incorporating MR-passive damper combinations in building structures in order to achieve acceptable levels of seismic performance. In order to do so, it first develops the MR damper model by integrating control algorithms commonly used in MR damper modelling. The developed MR damper is then integrated in to the seismically excited structure as a time domain function. Linear and nonlinear structure models are evaluated in real time scenarios. Analyses are conducted to investigate the influence of location and number of devices on the seismic performance of the building structure. The findings of this paper provide information towards the design and construction of earthquake safe buildings with optimally employed MR dampers and MR-passive damper combinations.

  • The recent completions of free-form spatial structures provide us a very attractive form. To realize such an extraordinary shape, it is absolutely necessary that the connector systems have to be investigated the characteristics of the systems and analyzed with a practicable method. In this context, this research consists of not only literature research but also numerical analysis with selected connector systems, which was adopted in real free-form spatial structures. For numerical analysis, especially, finite element analysis (FEA) is performed with a various test parameter using a commercial program ANSYS. Consequently, the general characteristics of node connectors the moment-rotation-curves are presented by considering a large deformation effect as well as a multi-linear material properties.

  • For vibration control of civil structures, especially large civil structures, one of the important issues is how to place a minimal number of actuators and sensors at their respective optimal locations to achieve the predetermined control performance. In this paper, a methodology is presented for the determination of the minimal number and optimal location of actuators and sensors for vibration control of building structures under earthquake excitation. In the proposed methodology, the number and location of the actuators are first determined in terms of the sequence of performance index increments and the predetermined control performance. A multi-scale response reconstruction method is then extended to the controlled building structure for the determination of the minimal number and optimal placement of sensors with the objective that the reconstructed structural responses can be used as feedbacks for the vibration control while the predetermined control performance can be maintained. The feasibility and accuracy of the proposed methodology are finally investigated numerically through a 20-story shear building structure under the El-Centro ground excitation and the Kobe ground excitation. The numerical results show that with the limited number of sensors and actuators at their optimal locations, the predetermined control performance of the building structure can be achieved.

  • The dynamic response of structures under extremely short duration dynamic loads is of great concern nowadays. This paper investigates structures' response as well as the associated structural damage to explosive loads considering and ignoring the supporting soil flexibility effect. In the analysis, buildings are modeled by two alternate approaches namely, (1) building with fixed supports, (2) building with supports accounting for soil-flexibility. A lumped parameter model with spring-dashpot elements is incorporated at the base of the building model to simulate the horizontal and rotational movements of supporting soil. The soil flexibility for various shear wave velocities has been considered in the investigation. In addition, the influence of variation of lateral natural periods of building models on the obtained response and peak response time-histories besides damage indices has also been investigated under blast loads with different peak over static pressures. The Dynamic response is obtained by solving the governing equations of motion of the considered building model using a developed Matlab code based on the finite element toolbox CALFEM. The predicted results expressed in time-domain by the building model incorporating SSI effect are compared with the corresponding model results ignoring soil flexibility effect. The results show that the effect of surrounding soil medium leads to significant changes in the obtained dynamic response of the considered systems and hence cannot be simply ignored in damage assessment and response time-histories of structures where it increases response and amplifies damage of structures subjected to blast loads. Moreover, the numerical results provide an understanding of level of damage of structure through the computed damage indices.
