  • The performance of the daylighting in buildings depends on building site and shape. As an energy saving design strategy, daylighting is a key issue in green building design. In this paper, the influence of the adjacent or obstructed building on daylighting performance of the office building in urban area was analyzed. A typical office building about 20 storeys with obstructed buildings has been modeled and simulated using Radiance. The parametric simulations have been performed to analyze the influence of the daylighting performance (illuminance, luminance) of the analyzed office. The results show that the possibility of the glare was decreased when the obstructed building is located in south, also the illuminance level was significantly decreased. When the obstructed building is located in north, the changes of the illuminance level and luminance possibility were somewhat small compared to the unobstructed condition. The daylighting performance of the analyzed building was most affected by the obstructed building in winter season.

  • This paper presents results from analysis of architectural plan drawings of 355 elementary schools recently designed for 4 years. Theses plans are analyzed by factors such as local distribution, number of classes, type of plan, total construction area, area per a class, area per a student, and area status of each space. The purpose of this study is to provide fundamental resources for architectural designing and planning of elementary schools through finding trend and status of elementary school buildings that have no detailed data of area index. The results of this study are as follows: 1. As a result from analyzing number of classes in the surveyed schools, schools having 36 classes are dominant and schools having 72 classes are also shown. Average number of classes is 34.1. This result reflect s that elementary schools have been planned as large-scale schools. 2. In terms of type of plan, we found out that instead of disappearing traditional single corridor type building, the open school building that have multi-purpose spaces are mainly designed. In addition to that, there are few schools with large class rooms. 3. In the status of area of each school, they have much larger areas than areas provided by building guidelines. Secondly, there are some schools with two times area difference even though they have same class number. Therefore, it needs to adjust the school building guidelines to practical needs in the consideration of elementary school building for compulsory education. Though the plans of recently designed school for 4 year s are more differentiated than past, there are few schools planned by appropriate plan design and area distribution scheme. As a consequence, some improvements like improvement of building guidelines are desperate.

  • New methodology is proposed to predict the hourly cooling load of the next day using maximum/minimum temperature and building area. The maximum and minimum temperature are obtained from forecasted weather data. The cooling load parameters related to building area are set through a database provided from reference buildings. To validate the performance of the proposed method, the predicted cooling loads in hourly bases are calculated and compared with the measured data. The predicted results show fairly good agreement with the measured data for benchmarking building.

  • Recently, it is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore carbon emission implication of building operations due to the significant rate of energy usage in buildings. In the building sector, our normal expectation implies that large building floor area induces more greenhouse gas (GHG) emission. In this research, the correlation between building total floor areas and GHG emission was explored by simple linear regression and analyzing the yielded residuals for confirming this seemingly obvious conjecture. By looking at the generated regression lines drawn based on the data sets representing public facilities in Ontario, Canada, we were able to confirm that carbon emission rate shows a proportional increase or decrease depending on the total floor area of buildings as has been implied as a conjecture. Some buildings were found to emit significantly large and small amount of GHG, and we addressed potential reasons why those buildings show the deviation from the confirmed proportional interrelation between a building's total floor area and the amount of GHG emission.

  • This study explores changes of industrial scales and building activities in the semi-industrial area of Seoul's Seong-su, responding to the shifts of industrial structures and policies in the Korean society. The purpose of this study is to investigate patterns of construction activities of factory buildings in the Seong-su semi-industrial area by analyzing changes in industrial facilities. As a result of the analysis, the change of the factory building area come out from the recent survey implies the possibility of entrepreneurial inflow as much and the new constructions and some remodeling cases which are characterized by complexity seem to correspond to the industrial structure. However, it is unreasonable to believe that this phenomenon is a mainstream movement involving small-scale factory buildings and companies. This is because there are aspects that are not included in this movement, such as changing the use of buildings without accompanying physical changes. On the other hand, compared to various movements of individual companies in response to the industrial structure, the physical plan suggests a limited alternative centering on the floor area ratio and the building area ratio. This means that the efforts to attract and grow the power of knowledge based-industry through the designation of the Industrial Development Promotion District in part of the case sites, overlook the natural change through remodeling and reuse of existing buildings. In addition, considering the fact that the production space of industrial use can be greatly influenced by the behavior of users compared to general buildings such as residential and commercial, it is necessary to pay attention to various phenomena occurring in the area more locally than the uniform supply policy. Based on these findings, this study contributes to illuminate the legal system related to building act in the Seong-su semi-industrial area and the potential direction of architectural suggestions in related policies and researches.

  • A demand of public using building in rural residential area changes over times. With the changes, the function and the scale of the public using building are also changed, the building is more influences on people in rural area. However, the most of facilities have been focused on the agricultural productions, and thus the facilities of health care, culture, and daylife supporting were not enough comparing to the facilities in urban area. This study surveys the facility and grasps the current status and problem of 37 rural residential area. In addition, three different revitalizing plans of public using building as a current availability and plan for use are suggested. A new community center where is expected that the public usage is increased should be managed intensively regarding an air conditioning, and waterproofing work, while an old community center and the warehouse where are expected that the public usage is decreased, but have locational advantage should be used as a rural life experience facilities and a accommodations with remodeling unless the safety matter A parking lots are considered that the availability is gradually increased and needed for public while it is difficult to get a new available site because of the ownership. Therefore, it is national decision to secure the site by removing the discarded facilities.

  • Terrain, building location and area, and building shape information is in need of implementing 3D map. This paper proposes a method of extracting a building area by an improved semi-automatic snake algorithm. The method consists of 3-stage: pre-processing, initializing control points, and applying an improved snake algorithm. In the first stage, after transforming a satellite image to a gray image and detecting the approximate edge of the gray image, the method combines the gray image and the edge. In the second stage, the user looks for the center point of a building and the system sets the circular or rectangular initial control points by an procedural method. In the third stage, the enhanced snake algorithm extracts the building area. In particular, this paper sets the one tenn of the snake in a new way in order to use the proposed method for specializing building area extraction. Finally, this paper evaluated the performance of the proposed method using sky view satellite image and it showed that the matching percentage to the exact building area is 75%.

  • This study investigates how much building area among total building area concentrates on urban region in a local government region and then, I applies 'The Index of Building Concentration in Urban Area' for the first time in a study. The finding shows that Cities' Index is higher than counties', and also shows that a lower index is associated with a higher rate of older adult population, and is also associated with higher general budget expenditure by the local government based on the index of Building Concentration in Urban Area in Gyeongbuk Province. This study provides evidence that the Index of Building Concentration in Urban Area can be utilized in measuring shrinkage level, effectiveness of municipal finance, and in establishing shrinkage city/county planning by basic data.
