  • A thermal barrier coating (TBC) with self-healing property for cracks was proposed to improve reliability during gas turbine operation, including structural design. Effect of healing agent on crack propagation behavior in TBCs with and without buffer layer was investigated through furnace cyclic test (FCT). Molybdenum disilicide ($MoSi_2$) was used as the healing agent; it was encapsulated using a mixture of tetraethyl orthosilicate and sodium methoxide. Buffer layers with composition ratios of 90 : 10 and 80 : 20 wt%, using yttria stabilized zirconia and $MoSi_2$, respectively, were prepared by air plasma spray process. After generating artificial cracks in TBC samples by using Vickers indentation, FCTs were conducted at $1100^{\circ}C$ for a dwell time of 40 min., followed by natural air cooling for 20 min. at room temperature. The cracks were healed in the buffer layer with the healing agent of $MoSi_2$, and it was found that the thermal reliability of TBC can be enhanced by introducing the buffer layer with healing agent in the top coat.

  • This paper investigated structural and electrical properties of $Y_{2}O_3$ as a buffer layer of sin91r transistor FRAM (ferroelectric RAM). $Y_{2}O_3$ buffer layers were deposited at a low substrate temperature below 400$^{\circ}C$ and then RTA (rapid thermal anneal) treated. Investigated parameters are substrate temperature, $O_2$ partial pressure, post- annealing temperature, and suppression of interfacial $SiO_2$ layer generation. for a well-fabricated sample, we achieved that leakage current density ($J_{leak}$) in the order of $10^{-7}A/cm2$, breakdown electric field ($E_{br}$) about 2 MV/cm for $Y_{2}O_3$ film. Capacitance versus voltage analysis illustrated dielectric constants of 7.47. We successfully achieved an interface state density of $Y_{2}O_3$/Si as low as $8.72{\times}10^{10}cm^{-2}eV^{-1}$. The low interface states were obtained from very low lattice mismatch less than 1.75%.

  • In this study, zinc oxide(ZnO) having large misfit(18.2%) with sapphire was tried to be grown on very thin nitride buffer layers. For the creation of various kinds of nitride buffer layer, sapphire surface was modified by an irradiation of nitrogen ion beam with low energy generated from stationary plasma thruster(SPT) at room temperature. After the irradiation of ion beam, Al-N and Al-O-N bonding was identified to be formed as nitride buffet layers. Surface morphology was measured by AFM and then ZnO growth was followed by pulsed laser deposition(PLD). Their properties are analyzed by XRD, AFM, TEM, and PL. We observed that surface morphology was improved and deep level emission related to defects was almost vanished in PL spectra from the ZnO grown on nitride buffer layer.

  • We developed poly (3,4-ethylene dioxylene thiophene):poly (styrene sulfonic acid) (PEDOT:PSS)-free organic solar cells (OSCs) using buffer and anode combined Ta doped $In_2O_3$ (ITaO) electrodes. To optimize the ITaO electrodes, we investigated the effect of $Ta_2O_5$ doping power on the electrical, optical, and structural properties of the co-sputtered ITaO films. The optimized ITaO film doped with 20 W $Ta_2O_5$ radio frequency power showed sheet resistance of 17.11 Ohm/square, a transmittance of 93.45%, and a work function of 4.9 eV, all of which are comparable to the value of conventional ITO electrodes. The conventional bulk heterojunction OSC with ITaO anode showed a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.348% similar to the OSCs (3.541%) with an ITO anode. In addition, OSCs fabricated on an ITaO electrode successfully operated without an acidic PEDOT:PSS buffer layer and showed a PCE of 2.634%, which was much higher than the comparable no buffer OSC with an ITO anode. Therefore, co-sputtered ITaO electrodes simultaneously acting as a buffer and an anode layer can be considered promising transparent electrodes for cost-efficient and reliable OSCs because they can eliminate the use of an acidic PEDOT:PSS buffer layer.

  • In the recent years, thin film solar cells (TFSCs) have emerged as a viable replacement for crystalline silicon solar cells and offer a variety of choices, particularly in terms of synthesis processes and substrates (rigid or flexible, metal or insulator). Among the thin-film absorber materials, SnS has great potential for the manufacturing of low-cost TFSCs due to its suitable optical and electrical properties, non-toxic nature, and earth abundancy. However, the efficiency of SnS-based solar cells is found to be in the range of 1 ~ 4 % and remains far below those of CdTe-, CIGS-, and CZTSSe-based TFSCs. Aside from the improvement in the physical properties of absorber layer, enormous efforts have been focused on the development of suitable buffer layer for SnS-based solar cells. Herein, we investigate the device performance of SnS-based TFSCs by introducing double buffer layers, in which CdS is applied as first buffer layer and ZnMgO films is employed as second buffer layer. The effect of the composition ratio (Mg/(Mg+Zn)) of RF sputtered ZnMgO films on the device performance is studied. The structural and optical properties of ZnMgO films with various Mg/(Mg+Zn) ratios are also analyzed systemically. The fabricated SnS-based TFSCs with device structure of SLG/Mo/SnS/CdS/ZnMgO/AZO/Al exhibit a highest cell efficiency of 1.84 % along with open-circuit voltage of 0.302 V, short-circuit current density of 13.55 mA cm-2, and fill factor of 0.45 with an optimum Mg/(Mg + Zn) ratio of 0.02.

  • We have studied the role of ${\alpha}-Al_{2}O_{3}$ buffer layer as a diffusion barrier in the Ba-ferrite/$SiO_{2}$ magnetic thin films for high-density recording media. In the interface of amorphous Ba-ferrite $(1900-{\AA}-thick)/SiO_{2}$ thin film during annealing, the interfacial diffusion started to occur at ${\sim}700^{\circ}C$. As the annealing temperature increased up to $800^{\circ}C$, the interfacial diffusion abruptly proceeded resulting in the high interface roughness and the deterioration of the magnetic properties. In order to control the interfacial diffusion at the high temperature, we introduced ${\alpha}-Al_{2}O_{3}$ buffer layer ($110-{\AA}-thick$) in the interface of Ba-ferrite/$SiO_{2}$ thin film. During the annealing of Ba-ferrite/${\alpha}-Al_{2}O_{3}/SiO_{2}$ thin film even at ${\sim}800^{\circ}C$, the interface was very smooth. The magnetic properties, such as saturation magnetization and intrinsic coercivity, were also enhanced, due to the inhibition of interfacial diffusion by the ${\alpha}-Al_{2}O_{3}$ buffer layer. Our study suggests that the ${\alpha}-Al_{2}O_{3}$ buffer layer act as a useful interfacial diffusion barrier in the Ba-ferrite/$SiO_{2}$ magnetic thin films.

  • Organic solar cells (OSCs) with low cost have been studied to apply on flexible substrate by solution process in low temperature [1]. In previous researches, conventional organic solar cell was composed of metal oxide anode, buffer layer such as PEDOT:PSS, photoactive layer, and metal cathode with low work function. In this structure, indium tin oxide (ITO) and Al was generally used as metal oxide anode and metal cathode, respectively. However, they showed poor reliability, because PEDOT:PSS was sensitive to moisture and air, and the low work function metal cathode was easily oxidized to air, resulting in decreased efficiency in half per day [2]. Inverted organic solar cells (IOSCs) using high work function metal and buffer layer replacing the PEDOT:PSS have focused as a solution in conventional organic solar cell. On the contrary to conventional OSCs, ZnO and TiO2 are required to be used as a buffer layer, since the ITO in IOSC is used as cathode to collect electrons and block holes. The ZnO is expected to be excellent electron transport layer (ETL), because the ZnO has the advantages of high electron mobility, stability in air, easy fabrication at room temperature, and UV absorption. In this study, the IOSCs based on poly [N-900-hepta-decanyl-2,7-carbazole-alt-5,5-(40,70-di-2-thienyl-20,10,30-benzothiadiazole)] (PCDTBT) : [6,6]-phenyl C71 butyric acid methyl ester (PC70BM) were fabricated with the ZnO electron-transport layer and MoO3 hole-transport layer. Thickness of the ZnO for electron-transport layer was controlled by rotation speed in spin-coating. The PCDTBT and PC70BM were mixed with a ratio of 1:2 as an active layer. As a result, the highest efficiency of 2.53% was achieved.

  • We have fabricated good quality superconducting $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-{\delta}}$ thin films on Hastelloy(Ni-Cr-Mo alloys) with $CeO_2$ buffer layers by in-situ pulsed laser deposition in a multi-target processing chamber. Using one of electrical properties of YBCO superconducting which the resistance approaches to zero dramatically on transition temperature, we have researched to make power transmission line, we have deposited YBCO thin film on flexible metallic substrate. However, it is difficult to make films on flexible metallic substrates due to both interdiffusion problem between metallic substrate and superconducting layer and non-crystallization of YBCO on amorphous substrate. From early research, two ways-using textured metallic substrate and buffer layer-were proposed to overcome theses difficulties. We have chosen $CeO_2$ as a buffer layer which has cubic structure of $5.41{\AA}$ lattice parameter and only 0.2% of lattice mismatch with $3.82{\AA}$ of a-axis lattice parameter of YBCO on (110) direction of $CeO_2$. In order to enhance the crystallization of YBCO films on metallic substrates we deposited $CeO_2$ buffer layers at varying temperature $700^{\circ}C$ to $800^{\circ}C$ and $O_2$ pressure. By X-ray diffraction, we found that each domination of (200) and (111) orientations were strongly relied upon the deposition temperature in $CeO_2$ layer and the change of the domination of orientation affects the crystallization of YBCO upper layer.
