  • The PCI Express spec introduces retry buffer in Data Link Layer For data integrity. But this buffer have some restrictions as buffer's usage. So we proposed effective management for retry buffer on PCI-Express interface. Proposed buffer management give increase performance and data integrity simultaneously.

  • This research is concerned with buffer management in a multi-cell FMS(Flexible Manufacturing System) with an AGVS(Automated Guided Vehicle System). To reduce blocking and starving caused by breakdowns, variablility in process times, and diversity of part routing, buffer is needed. Due to the high per unit buffer cost, which primarily consists of floor space and equipment cost, the total capacity of buffers in an FMS is very limited. Therefore, proper buffer management can provide a high system efficiency. This paper presents a buffer management model for a multi-cell FMS with an AGVS and a simulation study to compare the proposed model to a conventional buffer management model in a job shop FMS.

  • ATM network is considered as best suitable technology for multimedia service in various aspects such as bandwidth, capability of traffic expandability and so on. In this paper, we suggested a buffer management algorithm in ATM network to improve overall network performance with threshold and auxiliary buffer whose input consists of superpositiI on of voice and multimedia data traffic. To evaluate the proposed buffer management algorithm simulations are executed with four priorities, that is delay and loss priorities and the results are proved that network throughput is improved better than the existing partial buffer method.

  • NAND flash memory-based Solid State Drives (SSD) have lots of merits compared to traditional hard disk drives (HDD). However, random write in SSD is still far slower than sequential read/write and random read. There are two independent approaches to resolve this problem: 1) using part of the flash memory blocks as log blocks, and 2) using internal write buffer (DRAM or Non-Volatile RAM) in SSD. While log blocks are managed by the Flash Translation Layer (FTL), write buffer management has been treated separately from FTL. Write buffer management schemes did not use the exact status of log blocks and log block management schemes in FTL did not consider the behavior of write buffer management scheme. In this paper, we first show that log blocks and write buffer have a tight relationship to each other, which necessitates integrated management of both of them. Since log blocks also can be viewed as another type of write buffer, we can manage both of them as an integrated write buffer. Then we provide three design criteria for the integrated write buffer management scheme which can be very useful to SSD firmware designers.

Timer-based Buffer Management for Reliable Multicast (신뢰적 멀티캐스트를 위한 타이머 기반 버퍼 관리)

  • In order to deliver multicast traffic efficiently, multicast routing and reliable transmission mechanisms are required. The reliable delivery implies that lost packets must be retransmitted, which in turn requires that transmitted packets be stored in a retransmission buffer. Therefore how to manage a retransmission buffer is important and, in this paper, we try to solve the problem of how many packets should be maintained in the buffer. Our proposed scheme, the timer-based buffer management (TBM), maintains only necessary amount of buffer based on the timer value calculated from the NAKs between the replier and receivers on a multicast tree and can adjust to the dynamic network conditions. By performing simulations, we show that TBM manages the buffer efficiently regardless of the error situation, network size, and so on.

  • TOC(Theory of Constraints) - the emphasis of this philosophy was on identifying and eliminating constraints(bottle-necks) in the system. TOC solves this and optimizes whole system by improving manufacturing constraints that limit system result. In this paper, it is shown that the concept of the "delayed differentiation" can be applied for enhancing the efficiency of the time buffer and thus reducing the of the time buffer.

  • In this letter, we propose a new online buffer management algorithm to simultaneously provide diverse multimedia traffic services and enhance network performance. Our online approach exhibits dynamic adaptability and responsiveness to the current traffic conditions in multimedia networks. This approach can provide high buffer utilization and thereby improve packet loss performance at the time of congestion.

Threshold-based Filtering Buffer Management Scheme in a Shared Buffer Packet Switch

  • In this paper, an efficient threshold-based filtering (TF) buffer management scheme is proposed. The TF is capable of minimizing the overall loss performance and improving the fairness of buffer usage in a shared buffer packet switch. The TF consists of two mechanisms. One mechanism is to classify the output ports as sctive or inactive by comparing their queue lengths with a dedicated buffer allocation factor. The other mechanism is to filter the arrival packets of inactive output ports when the total queue length exceeds a threshold value. A theoretical queuing model of TF is formulated and resolved for the overall packet loss probability. Computer simulations are used to compare the overall loss performance of TF, dynamic threshold (DT), static threshold (ST) and pushout (PO). We find that TF scheme is more robust against dynamic traffic variations than DT and ST. Also, although the over-all loss performance between TF and PO are close to each other, the implementation of TF is much simpler than the PO.

Design and Planning Criteria for the Green Buffer Zone (환경친화적 완충녹지의 기준설정)

  • The purpose of the study is to analyze the existing situation of the green buffer zone in the large scale industrial site and other major residential apartment areas. In this study, it is specifically intended that the planning guideline be upgraded to adopt future landuse trends and thus to suggest design criteria for management of the buffer zone. The framework of the analysis is to review the current landuse, noise reduction, ecological implications and landscape in general. Although the major function of a green buffer zone is considered to protect the residential area from various hazards of industrial, traffic, and visual environment, the situation is that most of the zones are maintained at a minimum level of services by local government. The study carried out intensively almost every type of case studied throughout the country, which implies that the management of the green buffer zone should be expanded physically enough to function for its original objectives. The study recommends that ecological management of the green buffer zone be emphasized and therefore the criteria for this purpose as well as noise issue should be developed prior to the landuse aspects. The study suggests specific guidelines for planning and design for the green buffer zone development. This study should be verified positively through the sustainable monitoring and requires nationwide and overall examination so that it may be applied to whole green spaces.
