Numerical models of fluid dynamics inside the micro actuator chamber and nozzle are presented. The models include ink flow from reservoir, bubble formation and growth, ejection through the nozzle, and dynamics of refill process. Since high tapered nozzle is one of the very important parameters for overall actuator performance design. The effects of variations of nozzle thickness, diameter, and taper angles are simulated and some results are compared with the experimental results. It is found that the ink droplet ejection through the thinner and high tapered nozzle is more steady, fast, and robust.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to estimate the applicability of regional sample collection of environmental samples. The concentration of asbestos fibers were analyzed with two devices. One was an existing commercial air sampling pump that has been proved to be accurate and exact, and the other is a remodeled pump for sample collection which was made from an electric bubble generator originally designed for aquarium fish. Samples were collected with the two devices under the same environmental conditions and collection equipment. A comparative analysis of the concentration of ambient asbestos fiber was then performed. Methods: Based on previous research, six farmhouses with asbestos fiber slate roofs known to have high concentrations of asbestos fiber were selected. Using the existing commercial air sampling pump and the remodeled electric bubble generator, four to seven samples were collected each day one meter downwind from the edge of the slate roof at high volume (about 4 L/min) and low volume (about 1.4 L/min). The analyzer responsible for sample quality control of asbestos fibers counted the number of asbestos fibers with a phase microscope. Results: The rates of flow change of the existed sampler and the remodeled pump at high volume were 0.82% and 0.17%, respectively. The rates of flow change at low volume were 3.83% and 1.09%, but there was not significant difference. The rates of flow change are within the error range (${\pm}5%$) of OSHA analyzing methods. For the high volume sampler, the average asbestos fiber concentration in the air collected by the existed sampler is 6.270 fibers/L and for the remodeled one 5.527 fibers/L, not a significant difference. For the low volume sampler, the average asbestos fiber concentration in the air collected by the existed sampler is 7.755 fibers/L and for the remodeled one 7.706 fibers/L, not a significant difference. The total area of the slate roof of the targeted farmhouse has an effect on the concentration of asbestos fibers in the air from the existing pump and the remodeled one (p<0.01). Conclusions: The sampling function between the existing commercial pump and the remodeled one shows little difference. Therefore, the remodeled pump is considered a pump with a good availability for collecting ambient air asbestos samples.
Nucleate boiling experiments with constant wall temperature of heating surface were performed using R113 for almost saturated pool boiling conditions. A microscale heater array and Wheatstone bridge circuits were used to maintain a constant wall temperature condition and to measure the heat flow rate with high temporal and spatial resolutions. Bubble images during the bubble growth were taken as 5000 frames a sec using a high-speed CCD camera synchronized with the heat flow rate measurements. The geometry of the bubble during growth time could be obtained from the captured bubble images. The bubble growth behavior was analyzed using the new dimensionless parameters for each growth regions to permit comparisons with previous results at the same scale. We found that the new dimensionless parameters can describe the whole growth region as initial and later respectively. The comparisons showed good agreement in the initial and thermal growth regions. The required heat flow rate for the volume change of the observed bubble was estimated to be larger than the instantaneous heat flow rate measured at the wall. Heat, which is different from the instantaneous heat supplied through the heating wall, can be estimated as being transferred through the interface between bubble and liquid even with saturated pool conditions. This phenomenon under a saturated pool condition needs to be analyzed and the data from this study can supply the good experimental data with the precise boundary condition (constant wall temperature).
In two-fluid simulations of flow boiling, the modeling of the mean bubble diameter is a key parameter in the closure relations governing the intefacial transfer of mass, momentum, and energy. Monodispersed approach proved to be insufficient to describe the significant variation in bubble size during flow boiling in a heated pipe. A population balance model (PBM) has been employed to address these shortcomings. During nucleate boiling, vapor bubbles of a certain size are formed on the heated wall, detach and migrate into the bulk flow. These bubbles then grow, shrink or disintegrate by evaporation, condensation, breakage and aggregation. In this study, a parametric analysis of the PBM aggregation and breakage models has been performed to investigate their effect on the radial distribution of the mean bubble diameter and vapor volume fraction. The simulation results are compared with the DEBORA experiments (Garnier et al., 2001). In addition, the influence of PBM parameters on the local distribution of individual bubble size groups was also studied. The results have shown that the modeling of aggregation process has the largest influence on the results and is mainly dictated by the collisions due to flow turbulence.
Nucleate pool boiling experiments for R11 under a constant wall temperature condition were carried out. A microscale heater array was used for the heating and the measurement of high temporal and spatial resolution by the Wheatstone bridge circuit. Very sensitive heat flow rate data were obtained by the control for the surface condition with high time resolution. The measured heat flow rate shows a discernable peak at the initial growth stage and reaches an almost constant value. In the thermal growth region, bubble shows a growth proportional to $t^{\frac{1}{5}}$. The bubble growth behavior is analyzed with a dimensionless parameter to compare with the previous results in the same scale. As the wall superheat increases, the departure diameter and the departure time increase, and the waiting time decreases. But the asymptotic growth rate is not affected by the wall superheat change. The effect of the wall superheat is resolved into the suggested growth equation. Dimensionless parameters of time and bubble radius characterize the thermal growth behavior well, irrespective of wall condition. The comparison between the result of this study and the previous results shows a good agreement at the thermal growth region. The quantitative analysis for the heat transfer mechanism is conducted with the measured heat flow rate behavior and the bubble growth behavior. The required heat flow rate for the volume change of the observed bubble is about twice as much as the instantaneous heat flow rate supplied from the wall.
The air-bubble sheet has been widely used to wrap fragile products for long-distance transportation. The further usage of the air-bubble sheet as a thermal-insulation material for the reduction of the thermal conductivities of window systems has occurred because of its low price, in addition to its thermal-conductivity properties. In this study, the thermal performances of a variety of commercial air-bubble sheets according to various applications were evaluated. The experiments were performed with single-glazed and double-glazed windows and three types of air-bubble sheets of different air volumes. U-values are used and were calculated for the determination of the thermal performances that are based on the KS F 2278. The maximum decrease of the U-value was measured as 1.092 when a sheet was attached onto the frame of single-glazed window. The square-like air-bubble sheet that contains the largest air volume shows the highest thermal-resistance value. Double layers of the air-bubble sheets show better performances than those of the single layers on both sides of the windows.

Slug flow is the most common multi-phase flow encountered in oil and gas industry. In this study, the hydrodynamic features of flow in pipes investigated numerically using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations for the effect of slug flow on the vertical and bent pipeline. The compressible Reynold averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equation was used as the governing equation, with the volume of fluid (VOF) method to capture the outline of the bubble in a pipeline. The simulations were tested for the grid and time step convergence, and validated with the experimental and theoretical results for the main hydrodynamic characteristics of the Taylor bubble, i.e., bubble shape, terminal velocity of bubble, and the liquid film velocity. The slug flow was simulated with various air and water injection velocities in the pipeline. The simulations revealed the effect of slug flow as the pressure occurring in the wall of the pipeline. The peak pressure and pressure oscillations were observed, and those magnitudes and trends were compared with the change in air and water injection velocities. The mechanism of the peak pressures was studied in relation with the change in bubble length, and the maximum peak pressures were investigated for the different positions and velocities of the air and water in the pipeline. The pressure oscillations were investigated in comparison with the bubble length in the pipe and the oscillation was provided with the application of damping. The pressures were compared with the case of a bent pipe, and a 1.5 times higher pressures was observed due to the compression of the bubbles at the corner of the bent. These findings can be used as a basic data for further studies and designs on pipeline systems with multi-phase flow.
The cavitating noise of underwater propeller is considered numerically in this study. The main purpose of this research is to analyze these noise sources from marine propeller. The approach for investigation is a potential based panel method coupled with acoustic analogy. To predict propeller sheet cavitation noise, the blade surface cavity is considered as a single valued pulsating volume of vapor attached to the blade surface. The time dependent cavity volume data are used for noise prediction. Furthermore, we analyze hydrofoil cavitation bubble behavior and noise using Eulerian/Lagrangian approach. Through this study, we can analyze dominant noise source of marine propeller and provide a basis for proper noise control strategies.
