The determination of the shape and rising velocity of gas bubbles in a liquid pool is of great importance in analyzing the radioactive aerosol emissions from nuclear power plant accidents in terms of the fission product release rate and the pool scrubbing efficiency of radioactive aerosols. This article suggests a simple parameterization for the gas bubble rising velocity as a function of the volume-equivalent bubble diameter; this parameterization does not require prior knowledge of bubble shape. This is more convenient than previously suggested parameterizations because it is given as a single explicit formula. It is also shown that a bubble shape diagram, which is very similar to the Grace's diagram, can be easily generated using the parameterization suggested in this article. Furthermore, the boundaries among the three bubble shape regimes in the $E_o-R_e$ plane and the condition for the bypass of the spheroidal regime can be delineated directly from the parameterization formula. Therefore, the parameterization suggested in this article appears to be useful not only in easily determining the bubble rising velocity (e.g., in postulated severe accident analysis codes) but also in understanding the trend of bubble shape change due to bubble growth.
This study aims to investigate injection rate and microscopic spray characteristics of diesel fuel containing fine air bubble (FBD). fine bubble was generated by cavitation theory using bubble generator. Fuel spray was injected into constant volume chamber and visualized by high speed camera. The injection rate data was acquired with bosch tube method. Injection rate of finebubble diesel was very similar with that of diesel. It showed slightly faster injection start by 5 ㎲ attributed to the low viscosity characteristics. In microscopic spray visualization, fine bubble diesel spray showed unsymmetric spray shape compared with diesel spray. It also showed very vigorous spray atomization performance during initial spray development. Improved atomization was also attributed to the low viscosity and surface tension of finebubble diesel fuel.
The gas ventilated by supercavitation splits into smaller bubbles and follows the water passage of the cavitation tunnel. The bubbles quickly return to the test section by rather high speed flow, and interrupt the observation of the supercavitation. To secure clear observation in the test section, the bubble collecting section(settling chamber) of large volume is prepared to collect bubbles in the water passage ahead of the test section. The bubble collecting section should provide enough buoyancy effect to the bubbles for proper bubble collecting. However, rather high-speed oncoming flow produces non-uniform velocity distribution and deteriorates buoyancy effect in the bubble collecting section. In the present study, the bubble collecting space and three porous plates are designed and analyzed through numerical methods, and the bubble collecting function is experimentally validated by 1/10-scaled model in terms of the formation of uniformly low velocity distribution in the bubble collecting section.
Photobioreactor (PBR) that houses and cultivates microalgae providing a suitable environment for its growth, such as light, nutrients, CO2, heat, etc. is now getting more popular in the last decade. Among the many types of PBRs, the bubble column type is very attractive because of its simple construction and easy operation. However, despite the availability of these PBRs, only a few of them can be practically used for mass production. Many limitations still holdback their use especially during their scale-up. To enlarge the culture volume and productivity while supplying optimum environmental conditions, various PBR structures and process control are needed to be investigated. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was economically used to design a bubble-column type PBR taking the place of field experiments. CFD is a promising technique which can simulate the growth and production of microalgae in the PBR. To study bubble column PBR with CFD, the most important factor is the possibility of realizing bubble. In this study, multi-phase models which are generally used to realize bubbles were compared by theoretical approaches and comparing in a 2D simulation. As a result, the VOF (volume of fluid) model was found to be the most effective model to realize the bubbles shape as well as the flow inside PBR which may be induced by bubble injection. Considering the accuracy and economical efficiency, 0.005 second time step size was chosen for 2.5 mm mesh size. These results will be used as criteria for scale-up in the PBR simulation.
We conduct numerical simulations of the interaction of a deformable structure with two-phase compressible flow. The finite volume method (FVM) is used to simulate fluid phenomena including a shock wave, a gas bubble, and the deformation of free surface. The deformation of a floating structure is computed with the finite element method (FEM). The compressible two-phase volume of fluid (VOF) method is used for the generation and development of a cavitation bubble, and the immersed boundary method (IBM) is used to impose the effect of the structure on the fluid domain. The result of the simulation shows the generation of a shock wave, and the expansion of the bubble. Also, the deformation of the structure due to the hydrodynamic loading by the explosion is identified.
One of the most important subjects to develop a LPDi engine is to suppress the bubble generated inside the liquid LPG direct injector. For the purpose of this, the analogy visualization injector to visualize the generation and behaviors of bubble is manufactured, and the bubbling phenomenon and behaviors of bubble are visualized and investigated according to the change of the temperature around an injector wall, fuel pressure and a needle configuration. As results, it was found that the bubble inside the injector is generated around an injector hole and after rising by buoyancy it disappears around the top of a nozzle. The number of bubbles generated is little changed regardless of the lapse of time but it remarkably increases as the temperature around the injector increases. Also, it was known that as the sac volume in LPDi injector decreases the generation of bubble is more active and the rising velocity of bubble generated is increased.
Recently, the major trends of NIL are high throughput and large area patterning. For UV NIL, if it can be proceeded in the non-vacuum environment, which greatly simplifies tool construction and greatly shorten process times. However, one key issue in non-vacuum environment is air bubble formation problem. In this paper, numerical analysis of bubble defect of UV NIL is performed. Fluent, flow analysis focused program was utilized and VOF (Volume of Fluid) skill was applied. For various resist-substrate and resist-mold angles, effects of velocity inlet and residual layer thickness of resist on bubble defect formation were investigated. The numerical analyses show that the increases of velocity inlet and residual layer thickness can cause the bubble defect formation, however the decreases of velocity inlet and residual layer thickness take no difference in the bubble defect formation.
Nucleate boiling experiments on heating surface of constant wall temperature were performed using R113 for almost saturated pool boiling conditions. A microscale heater array and Wheatstone bridge circuits were used to maintain a constant wall temperature condition of heating surface and to measure the heat flow rate with high temporal and spatial resolutions. Bubble images during the bubble growth were taken as 5000 frames per second using a high-speed CCD camera synchronized with the heat flow rate measurements. The bubble growth behavior was analyzed using the new dimensionless parameters for each growth regions to permit comparisons with previous experimental results at the same scale. We found that the new dimensionless parameters can describe the whole growth region as initial and later (thermal) respectively. The comparisons showed good agreement in the initial and thermal growth regions. In the initial growth region including surface tension controlled, transition and inertia controlled regions as divided by Robinson and Judd, the bubble growth rate showed that the bubble radius was proportional to $t^{2/3}$ regardless of working fluids and heating conditions. And in the thermal growth region as also called asymptotic region, the bubble showed a growth rate that was proportional to $t^{1/5}$, also. Those growth rates were slower than the growth rates proposed in previous analytical analyses. The required heat flow rate for the volume change of the observed bubble was estimated to be larger than the heat flow rate measured at the wall. Heat, which is different from the instantaneous heat supplied through the heating wall, can be estimated as being transferred through the interface between bubble and liquid even with saturated pool condition. This phenomenon under a saturated pool condition needs to be analyzed and the data from this study can supply the good experimental data with the precise boundary condition (constant wall temperature).
The Rayleigh-Taylor instability, the bubble rising in both partially and fully filled containers and the droplet splash are simulated by an in-house solution code(PowerCFD), which are typical benchmark problems among multiphase flows with material interface due to density difference. The present method(code) employs an unstructured cell-centered method based on a conservative pressure-based finite-volume method with interface capturing method(CICSAM) in a volume of fluid(VOF) scheme for phase interface capturing. The present results are compared with other numerical solutions found in the literature. It is found that the present method simulates efficiently and accurately complex free surface flows such as multiphase flows with material interface due to both density difference and instability.
