A visualization study to evaluate bubble motion in a tab water filled cylindrical tank with a varying flow rate of compressed air is conducted. The flow rate of compressed air varies from 1 to 5 L/min. Time resolved images are acquired by a high speed camera in 10 bit gray level at 100 fps and the measurement volume is irradiated by a 230 W halogen lamp. It is observed that there are three different regions; the bubble formation region, the rising bubble region and the free surface region. During the rise of bubble, the shape is changed as if an elastic body. Based on the binarized bubble image, the mean diameters of rising bubbles are estimated at beneath of the free surface. As the gas flow rate increases, the mean diameter is increased and the rising velocity also increases with buoyancy force.
Local two-phase flow parameters of subcooled flow boiling in inclined annulus were measured to investigate the effect of inclination on the internal flow structure. Two-conductivity probe technique was applied to measure local gas phasic parameters, including void fraction, vapor bubble frequency, chord length, vapor bubble velocity and interfacial area concentration. Local liquid velocity was measured by Pilot tube. Experiments were conducted for three angles of inclination; 0$^{\circ}$(vertical), 30$^{\circ}$, 60$^{\circ}$. The system pressure was maintained at atmospheric pressure. The range of average void fraction was up to 10% and the average liquid superficial velocities were less than 1.3 m/sec. The results of experiments showed that the distributions of two-phase How parameters were influenced by the angle of channel inclination. Especially, the void fraction and chord length distributions were strongly affected by the increase of inclination angle, and flow pattern transition to slug flow was observed depending on the How conditions. The profiles of vapor velocity, liquid velocity and interfacial area concentration were found to be affected by the non-symmetric bubble size distribution in inclined channel. Using the measured distributions of local phasic parameters, an analysis for predicting average void fraction was performed based on the drift flux model and flowing volumetric concentration. And it was demonstrated that the average void fraction can be more appropriately presented in terms of flowing volumetric concentration.

Slug flow is the most common multi-phase flow encountered in oil and gas industry. In this study, the hydrodynamic features of flow in pipes investigated numerically using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations for the effect of slug flow on the vertical and bent pipeline. The compressible Reynold averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equation was used as the governing equation, with the volume of fluid (VOF) method to capture the outline of the bubble in a pipeline. The simulations were tested for the grid and time step convergence, and validated with the experimental and theoretical results for the main hydrodynamic characteristics of the Taylor bubble, i.e., bubble shape, terminal velocity of bubble, and the liquid film velocity. The slug flow was simulated with various air and water injection velocities in the pipeline. The simulations revealed the effect of slug flow as the pressure occurring in the wall of the pipeline. The peak pressure and pressure oscillations were observed, and those magnitudes and trends were compared with the change in air and water injection velocities. The mechanism of the peak pressures was studied in relation with the change in bubble length, and the maximum peak pressures were investigated for the different positions and velocities of the air and water in the pipeline. The pressure oscillations were investigated in comparison with the bubble length in the pipe and the oscillation was provided with the application of damping. The pressures were compared with the case of a bent pipe, and a 1.5 times higher pressures was observed due to the compression of the bubbles at the corner of the bent. These findings can be used as a basic data for further studies and designs on pipeline systems with multi-phase flow.
The objectives of this study are to examine a bubble trap mechanism of the turbidimeter for low turbidity and to acquire it's technology concerned. Reynolds-Averaged Wavier-Stokes equation and Laglangian discrete phase model were applied to analyze a flow field in the bubble trap. 3D hybrid grid system was used to simulate the flow field of bubble trap and numbers of it's node point are about 110,000. From the comparison between the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model and the laminar state, it was found that the former estimated less the velocity in the outlet of bubble trap than the latter did, and that the former estimated more the shear stress at the wall of bubble trap than the latter did. And, it was possible to visualize the path of bubbles in the bubble trap and to copy the removal process of bubbles out bubble trap. Also, it was found that nearly most of bubbles in the bubble trap disappeared.

Nucleate pool boiling experiments were performed using pure R11 for various surface angles under constant heat flux conditions during saturated pool boiling. A 1-mm-diameter circular heater with an artificial cavity in the center that was fabricated using a MEMS technique and a high-speed controller were used to maintain the constant heat flux. Bubble growth images were taken at 5000 frames per second using a high-speed CCD camera. The bubble geometry was obtained from the captured bubble images. The effects of the surface angle on the bubble growth behavior were analyzed for the initial and thermal growth regions using dimensional scales. The parameters that affected the bubble growth behavior were the bubble radius, bubble growth rate, sliding velocity, bubble shape, and advancing and receding contact angles. These phenomena require further analysis for various surface angles and the obtained constant heat flux data provide a good foundation for such future work.
Bubble columns are widely encountered in several industries, especially in the field of nuclear safety. The Eulerian-Eulerian and the Eulerian-Lagrangian methods are commonly used to investigate bubble columns. Eulerian approaches require additional tasks such as strict volume conservation at the interface and a predefined well-structured grid. In contrast, the Lagrangian approach can be easily implemented. Hence, we introduce a fully Lagrangian approach for the simulation of bubble columns using the discrete bubble model (DBM) and moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) methods. Additionally, we propose a rigorous method to estimate the volume fraction accurately, and verified it through experimental data and analytical results. The MPS method was compared with the experimental data of Dambreak. The DBM was verified by analyzing the terminal velocity of a single bubble for each bubble size. It agreed with the analytical results for each of the four drag correlations. Additionally, the improved method for calculating the volume fraction showed agreement with the Ergun equation for the pressure drop in a packed bed. The implemented MPS-DBM was used to simulate the bubble column, and the results were compared with the experimental results. We demonstrated that the MPS-DBM was in quantitative agreement with the experimental data.
It is well known that an air bubble trapped in water emits light at its collapse robustly with a proper forcing amplitude of ultrasound. Instability mechanism which causes deviation from sphericity of bubble wall was investigated theoretically. The rapid change of the bubble wall velocity which is both dependent on the forcing amplitude, was found to be a major factor of instability of the interface. The Rayleigh-Taylor instability which occurs when rapid acceleration is directed from the lighter towards the heavier fluid is found to be not related to the instability of the sonoluminescing gas bubble. A good agreement between the calculation results and experimental data is found.
This paper presents a new concept to reduce turbulent frictional drag by injecting micro-bubble into buffer layer of turbulent boundary layer on flat plate. The buffer layer of boundary was specified by minus velocity gradient of law of the wall. When the buffer layer region of turbulent boundary layer is filled with micro-bubble of air and viscous of the region is kept low, the velocity profile in the region should be changed substantially. Then the Reynolds stress in the buffer layer region becomes less, which guide to higher velocity gradient there. It results in reduction of velocity gradient at the viscous sublayer, which gives the reduction of shear stress at the wall.
To verify floatability of ABB (Air bubble barrier), we compared bubble swarm behavior with and without the air-driven ejector. Experiment was conducted using the fabricated air-driven ejector with 5 mm nozzle on the bottom of 1 m3 water tank. Reynolds number of air in the nozzle was ranged 1766-13248. We analyzed data with statistical method using image processing, particle mage velocimetry (PIV) and proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) analysis. As a result of POD analysis, there was no significant eigenmode in bubbly flow generated from the ejector. It means that more complex turbulent flows were formed by the ejector, thereby (1) making bubbles finer, (2) promoting three-dimensional energy transfer between bubble and water, and (3) making evenly distributed velocity profile of water. It is concluded that the air-driven ejector could enhance the performance of ABB.
