코이어배지의 재활용이 채소 작물의 생육에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Recycled Coir Organic Substrates on Vegetable Crop Growth)

  • The present study was investigated the effect of recycled coir organic substrates on the growth of different vegetable crops. The recycled coir had better physical and chemical properties than the new coir. The growth of tomato plant was better on the coir substrate that had been used for 2 years than that on the new coir substrate. The average number of tomato fruits was 108 on the new coir substrate, while it was 179 and 165 on the coir substrate used for 1 and 2 years, respectively. The growth of cherry tomato plant was also better on the coir substrate used for 2 years than that on the new coir substrate. The average number of cherry tomato fruits was 43 on the new coir substrate, while it was 206 and 164 on the coir substrate used for 1 and 2 years, respectively. The growth of brussel sprout was better on the coir substrate used for 3 years than that on the new coir substrate and the average number of brussel sprout leaves was 26.8 on the new coir substrate, while it was 34.3 on the coir substrate used for 3 years. The growth of Korean cabbage improved on the coir substrate used for 1 years compared to the new coir substrate and the number of leaves was 15.1 on the new coir substrate, while it was 24.3 on the coir substrate used for 1 year. Thus, used coir can be recycled to improve vegetable yields compared to using new coirs.

Comparative analysis of active components and antioxidant activities of Brussels sprouts (Brassica oleracea var. gemmifera) and cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata)

  • The applicability of Brussels sprouts, which are widely cultivated in Jeju, as a functional biomaterial in the cosmetics and food industries is investigated. The active ingredients (total phenols and flavonoids, β-carotene, vitamin C, free sugar, minerals, glucosinolates, and isothiocyanates) and antioxidant activities of 70% ethanol extracts of Brussels sprouts and cabbage were analyzed. The total phenol, flavonoid, vitamin C, and β-carotene contents of Brussels sprouts were approximately 36%, 2.5 times, 2.3 times, and 65% higher than those of cabbage, respectively. The total free sugar content of Brussels sprouts was 58%-72% lower than that of cabbage. The K content was the highest among the other minerals, and there was little difference between the two samples. The Na content was approximately three times higher in cabbage than in Brussels sprouts. The total glucosinolate content of Brussels sprouts was 34.5 mol SE/g DW, twice that of cabbage. The sinigrin content of Brussels sprouts was thrice (10.06 μmol/g DW) that of cabbage. The isothiocyanate (sulforaphane, I3C) content in Brussels sprouts was double that of cabbage. The antioxidant activity of Brussels sprout extract was 2.5 to 2.8 times higher in 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging capacity and 3.3 to 3.6 times higher in 2,2'-Azino-bis(3-ethybenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical scavenging capacity than those of cabbage extract. These are important basic data for the study of glucosinolates and isothiocyanates, which have anticancer activity, as well as antioxidant-related substances of Brussels sprout, which has high potential for use as a biomaterial in functional foods and cosmetics.

Sinapine누출을 이용한 십자화과 채소의 퇴화종자 선별법 (Screening Method for Non-viable Seeds in Brassicaceae Vegetable Crops by Sinapine Leakage)

  • 종자가 수분을 흡수할 경우 종자의 내용물이 밖으로 누출되는데 일반적으로 퇴화종자에서 건전종자보다 월등하게 많이 누출되는 특성이 있다. 십자화과 식물의 종자는 형광물질인 sinapine을 함유하고 있어서 수분을 흡수할 경우 퇴화종자에서 다량의 형광물질을 밖으로 배출한다. 이러한 특성을 이용하여 종자를 cellulose로 코팅하여 sinapine을 Cellulose층에 흡착토록 함으로써 퇴화종자를 쉽게 종자 개개의 단위로 선별하는 방법을 개발하였다. 따라서 본 시험에서 국내에 재배되는 십자화과 채소종자에 대해서 이러한 새로운 종자선별법을 이용하여 종자를 선별한 결과 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 1. 십자화과 채소종자의 퇴화종자에서 건전종자 보다 많은 양의 형광물질이 누출되었다. 2. 종자코팅을 통하여 형광종자와 무형광종자를 쉽게 구별할 수 있었다. 3. 형광종자의 비율은 퇴화종자가 많은 품종일수록 높았다. 4. 형광종자를 분리하여 제거하므로써 발아율이 약 5∼35%까지 향상되었다. 5. 무형광종자는 건전한 종자로써 발아율 및 종자세가 무처리종자보다 월등하였고, 형광종자는 대부분 발아하지 않았으며 발아한 묘는 거의가 비정상묘 였다.
