  • 본 논문에서는 모바일 통신 방송 융합분야는 세계 각국이 서로 상이한 표준을 가지고 있어 해외 시장 진출 시 제품 신뢰성 확보를 위한 해외 현지에서의 테스트가 중요시 되어서 국내 기업의 테스트 비용과 개발기간 면에서 경쟁력 확보의 악재로 작용하고 있다. 따라서 모바일 통신 방송의 세게 각 국 표준의 테스트 인프라를 확보하고 이를 활용하는 테스트의 전반적인 시스템을 구축하여 국내 기업의 테스트 비용 절감 및 개발기간 단축과 다양한 서비스 개발이 가능하다.

  • MPEG-21은 디지털 객체를 정의하고 이를 네트워크상에서 생성, 변형, 전달, 소비를 위한 통합적 멀티미디어 프레임워크에 대한 국제 표준이다. 디지털 아이템(DI: Digital item)은 MPEG-21 프레임워크 내에서 표준화 된 식별체계, 서술 형식을 따르는 구조화된 디지털 객체이며, 유통, 처리의 최소 단위이다 본 논문에서는 이러한 디지털 아이템을 최종 소비하는 MPEG-21 터미널 구조를 제안하고 이에 대한 설계 및 구현, 그리고 실험 결과를 제시한다

  • MPEG-21은 사용자가 다양한 멀티미디어 데이터를 네트워크상에서 생성, 변형, 전달, 소비하기 위한 통합적 멀티미디어 프레임워크를 정의한 국제 표준이 다. MPEG-21 DIA(digital item adaptation)는 멀티 미디어 데이터를 사용자의 환경, 단말기 특성, 네트워크 특성에 대한 정보를 기술할 수 있는 표준을 정의하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 DIA에서 정의한 여러 가지 적응 변환 중 사용자의 관심 영역을 중심으로 한 의미론적 변환 엔진을 구현하였으며, 이에 대한 실험결과를 제시한다 기존의 변환 방법이 비디오 프레임의 전체 크기, 해상도 화질을 조정하였다면, 의미론적 변환은 사용자의 관심 영역을 중심으로 변환을 수행함으로써, 사용자의 관심도를 반영할 수 있는 장점이 있다.

Context-aware Multimedia Framework based on Software Agent Platforms

  • We address an integrated multimedia framework based on a software agent platform for context-aware multimedia computing. We adopt the FIPA (Foundation for Intelligent Physical Agents) platform which provides agent communications and management mechanisms. In order to express context information, we use MPEG-21 metadata for describing user characteristics and usage environment. We encapsulate such context information as a FIPA message to be delivered between agents. Based on context information, appropriate multimedia content delivery becomes possible. We present our system implementation with a use case scenario and show that our proposed framework is effective for context-aware multimedia computing so that personalization of multimedia consumption can be possible.

QoS-Oriented Solutions for Satellite Broadcasting Systems

  • In this paper, we analyze the capability of satellite broadcasting systems to offer different levels of quality of service (QoS). We focus on the European telecommunications standards institute satellite digital radio and digital video broadcasting satellite handheld (DVB-SH) standards, which have recently been proposed for satellite broadcasting communications. We propose a strategy to provide different levels of QoS for the DVB-SH standard on the basis of an extension of the interleaving scheme, referred to as molded interleaver, which supports low latency service requirements for interactive services. An extensive analysis based on laboratory measurements shows the benefits of this solution. We also present a multilevel coding (MLC) scheme with multistage decoding designed for broadcasting communications as an alternative to the existing standards, where services with different levels of QoS are provided. We present a graphical method based on mutual information for the design and evaluation of MLC systems used for broadcasting communications. Extensive simulations for a typical satellite channel show the viability of the proposed MLC scheme. Finally, we introduce multidimensional constellations in the proposed MLC scheme in order to increase the number of different protection levels.

An Analysis of the Economic Effects of the Project which Constructs the Platfonn for Broadcasting and Communications Convergence Public Service (방통융합 공공서비스 플랫폼 구축사업의 경제적 파급효과 분석)

  • This paper is to analyze the economic effects of the broadcasting & communications convergence public service platform build-up. For the economic effect analysis, we reclassified the Broadcasting & Communications Convergence Industry Classification System and re-drew up 2009 Inter-industry Relations Table by using the 2003 Inter-industry Relations Table issued by the Bank of Korea and the RAS techniques. And we analyzed the economic effects that can be drawn from the broadcasting & communications convergence public service platform establishment. As a result, the gross production inductive effect which appears with the economic effect of the broadcasting & communications convergence public service platform establishment project from 2009 to 2014 came out to be about 3trillion 325.1 billion KW, added value inductive effect of 2trillion 976.5billion KW and the employment inductive effect of the job creation of about 13,806 people. Afterward, it is anticipated that the broadcasting & communications convergence public service platform build-up project to contribute to the improvement of Koreans' daily life. Moreover, this research will be used as a valued basic material in the pursuit of the future broadcasting & communications convergence projects.

  • An efficient intra mode selection algorithm is proposed to reduce the computational complexity of inter frames for the H.264|AVC video encoding system. We propose an adaptive thresholding algorithm based on distribution characteristics of the sum of the absolute differences (SAD) of the best inter mode. Through comparative analysis, the proposed algorithm shows better speed up ratio with a negligible quality loss.

  • There are several data broadcasting standards that the developers should apply when develops any interactive digital TV contents. In Korea, we adopts ACAP(Advanced Common Application Platform) as terrestrial data broadcasting standard, MHP(Multimedia Home Platform) fur satellite data broadcasting and OCAP(OpenCable Application Platform) for cable data broadcasting. Therefore, content providers must develop different applications which suited for different standards - even if the application is exactly same. This is waste of time and energy. This paper suggests a solution to solve this problem among different broadcasting platforms - MHP, OCAP and ACAP. We compared these specifications, and found out what APIs are typically used far applications. Then we designed XML file structures that can be used to define contents of applications. We also implemented an authoring tool which automatically generates XML files by interaction with users. This paper also ascertains Xlet applications, produced by the authoring tool, works properly on each different data broadcasting standard - MHP, OCAP and ACAP.

  • Multi-view video has recently gained much attraction from academic and commercial fields because it can deliver the immersive viewing of natural scenes. This paper presents multi-view video processing being composed of intermediate view reconstruction (IVR), graphics composition, and multi-view video viewer. First we generate virtual views between multi-view cameras using depth and texture images of the input videos. Then we mix graphic objects to the generated view images. The multi-view video viewer is developed to examine the reconstructed images and composite images. As well, it can provide users with some special effects of multi-view video. We present experimental results that validate our proposed method and show that graphic objects could become the inalienable part of the multi-view video.

  • It is expected that an intelligent broadcasting service (IBS) will be able to provide broadcast programs based on user preference and program-associated information (metadata) in order to assist users in easy navigation of the program content being broadcast. In this way, users will be able to access program content anytime, anywhere, and in the manner they wish. This type of IBS will be a basis for future broadcasting services such as customized broadcasting or personal casting. In this paper, we introduce an agent-based multimedia broadcasting framework using the Foundation for Intelligent Physical Agents (FIPA) and MPEG-7 technologies within MPEG-21. We use a FIPA implementation called FIPA open source as a platform for exchanging user preferences and program information as FIPA messages between a server and its clients. The user preference is modeled as the User Preference description scheme in MPEG-7 multimedia description schemes. We discuss a framework structure and implementation for the IBS.
