  • In this paper, an OFDM-CDMA broadband system is considered for a possible candidate of fixed wireless broadband access network applications. With an emphasis on a preamble design for multi-channel separation, we address a channel estimation based on the time-domain windowing and its imperfectness in OFDM-based multiple-antenna transmission systems. By properly designing each preamble for multiple antennas to be orthogonal in the time domain, the channel estimation can be applied to the ETSI HlPERLAN/2 and IEEE-802.11a standards in the case of more than two transmit antennas. Also, an effect of diversity techniques on the performance of OFDM-CDMA based broadband wireless access networks is investigated and the maximum achievable diversity gain for a two-path Rayleigh fading environment is evaluated Simulation results show that the OFDM-CDMA system applying a space-time-frequency diversity with a full-rate full diversity code can give the diversity of D = 4 and D = 8 for both multi-user cases of maximum user and half user capacities, respectively.

  • In this paper, we analyzed the performance of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing/ frequency hopping multiple access(OFDM/FHMA) hybrid system that in impulsive interference and broadband wireless communication channel then we applied the turbo code scheme to make satisfied in data and voice transmission service. Also, we compared the bit error rate(BER) performance of turbo coded diversity scheme in the OFDM/FHMA hybrid system. As a result of simulation, proposed OFDM/FHMA hybrid system shows the enhancement of 10 times compared to the general OFDM/FHMA system.

  • Recently, there have been intensive researches on the wireless Internet access through WiFi WLAN using WiRro network as backhaul link in the Internet service providing business area. However, in the wireless Internet access method, we need to solve the compatibility problem for different user authentications between licensed WiBro network and unlicensed WiFi network for billing and user management. In this paper, we propose an authentication method for WiFi users by BWAN operators through WiNNERs which is RS connecting the two networks, and discuss the effectiveness of the method.

  • Currently, IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN (WLAN) is rising as the most popular means for the broadband wireless access network. In this thesis, we propose a QoS(Quality of Service)-Oriented mechanism using handshaking method of scanning phase in IEEE 802.11 handoff. In conventional process for handoff, the major criterion to select the best AP(Access Point) among candidates is normally based on the RSS(Received Signal Strength), which does not always make the selected network guarantee the maximum achievable performance. Even though the link quality with a neighboring AP is excellent, the AP may not be a good candidate to handoff to simply because MAC(Medium Access Control) protocol of IEEE 802.11 standard is contention-based such as CSMA/CA. Therefore, if we apply network level information to AP selection criteria, we can achieve better handoff efficiency rather than before. The analysis and simulation results applied to our new mechanism show clearly better performance than AP selection based on traditional handoff method.

  • In this paper we designed a high speed wireless multiple access protocol, which is suitable for future multimedia wireless LAN systems which support high quality video teleconferencing, telephony and graphic databases. In the proposed protocol, Slotted-ALOHA protocol is used for transmitting random data packets and the packet reservation multiple access(PRMA) protocol for transmitting periodic data packets. The use of minislot is introduced for the reservation scheme. In order to measure the performance characteristic of the proposed protocol, a simulator is designed using an object oriented programming language, C++, and an exhaustive simulation study is carried out. From the simulation results, it is observed that the proposed protocol and the existing PRMA protocol have almost the same delay characteristic when network traffic is low. However, the proposed protocol is superior to the PRMA protocol when traffic becomes higher. The proposed protocol and the results can be utilized for the design of the wireless access systems and future broadband wireless LANs.

  • The wireless mesh network (WMN) has attracted significant interests as a broadband wireless network to provide ubiquitous wireless access for broadband services. Especially with incorporating multiple orthogonal channels and multiple directional antennas into the WMN, each node can communicate with its neighbor nodes simultaneously without interference between them. However, as we allow more freedom, we need a more sophisticated algorithm to fully utilize it and developing such an algorithm is not easy in general. In this paper, we study a joint channel assignment, link scheduling, routing, and rate control problem for the WMN with multiple orthogonal channels and multiple directional antennas. This problem is inherently hard to solve, since the problem is formulated as a mixed integer nonlinear problem (MINLP). However, despite of its inherent difficulty, we develop an algorithm to solve the problem by using the generalized Benders decomposition approach [2]. The simulation results show the proposed algorithm provides the optimal solution to maximize the network utility, which is defined as the sum of utilities of all sessions.

  • In this paper, we attempt to predict the future of broadband access market where new convergence access technologies and additional services are introduced, based on consumer preferences. Conjoint analysis and mixed logit model is used for estimation, From the results, consumers value convergence access technologies such as PLC and wireless LAN, and TV-related service, However, valuation on new beneficial features of convergence access technologies is not enough to overcome their technological inferiorities in data transfer speed and quality stability at current technological stage, Additionally, consumer preferences are so heterogeneous that differentiated business strategies are required, Finally, some managerial and policy implications are presented.

  • In this paper we introduce a bandwidth allocation algorithm and admission control policy for IEEE 802.16 broadband wireless access standard. The proposed mechanism is practical and compatible to the IEEE 802.16. Our scheme provides QoS support to high priority traffic and high throughput in low priority traffic. The simulation show that the proposed scheme includes QoS support for real-time traffic and we presented that BS determine a efficient contention mini-slot size. We have shown the relationship between traffic size and its QoS requirements and the network performance.

  • The workgroup of IEEE 802 proposed the IEEE 802.16 standard, also known as WiMAX, to provide broadband wireless access (BWA). The standard specifies two operational modes, one is popular PMP mode, and the other is optional mesh mode. In the mesh mode, the network entry process-NetEntry is the pivotal procedure for mesh network topology formulation and thus, influences the accessibility of whole mesh network. Unfortunately, the NetEntry process suffers from the hidden neighbor problem, in which new neighborship emerges after a new node comes in and results in possible collisions. In this paper, we propose a new SN-protected NetEntry process to address the problem. Simulation results show that the new proposed NetEntry process is more stable compared with the standard-based NetEntry process.
