Performance Evaluation of Bidirectional Optical Amplifiers for Amplified Passive Optical Network Based on Broadband Light Source Seeded Optical Sources

  • We have evaluated the performances of bidirectional optical amplifiers which were suited for the cost-effective implementation of amplified bidirectional passive optical networks (PONs). First, we measured the maximum gains of two simple bidirectional optical amplifiers implemented without using any optical components for the suppression of reflected signals. From the results, the maximum gains of two simple bidirectional amplifiers with a broadband light source (BLS) seeded optical source were limited to be 27 dB due to the reflection-induced in-band crosstalk, when the reflectance coefficients were measured to be -33 dB in both directions. Then, we have also implemented a bidirectional optical amplifier with two band splitters for the amplified bidirectional PON where the two different wavelength bands were allocated to the downstream and upstream signals transmission. In our measurement, we confirmed that the maximum gain of bidirectional optical amplifier with two band splitters could be increased to more than 30 dB owing to the efficient suppression of in-band crosstalk.

  • This paper describes the broadband SDC (Single-ended to Differential Converter) for Digital Video Broadcasting-Satellite $2^{nd}$ edition (DVB-S2) receiver tuner IC. It is fabricated by using $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS process. In order to obtain high linearity and low phase mismatch, the broadband SDC (Single-ended to Differential Converter) is designed with current mirror structure and cross-coupled capacitor and current source binding differential structure at VDD. The simulation result of SDC shows IIP3 of 11.9 dBm and IIP2 of 38 dBm. It consumes 5mA current with 2.7V supply voltage.

An OCDMA Scheme to Reduce Multiple Access Interference and Enhance Performance for Optical Subscriber Access Networks

  • We propose a new optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) scheme for reducing multiple access interference (MAI) and enhancing performance for optical subscriber access networks using modified pseudorandom noise (PN)-coded fiber Bragg gratings with bipolar OCDMA decoders. Through the bipolar OCDMA decoder and the modified PN codes, MAI among users is effectively depressed. As the data are encoded either by a unipolar signature sequence of the modified PN code or its complement according to whether the data bit is 1 or 0, the bit error ratio (BER) can be more improved with the same signal to interference plus noise ratio over the conventional on-off shift keying-based OCDMA system. We prove by numerical analysis that the BER of the proposed bipolar OCDMA system is better than the conventional unipolar OCDMA system. We also analyze the spectral power distortion effects of the broadband light source.

  • Incoherent broadband optical sources have been applied in various areas such as a light source for optical device characterization, fiber-optic gyroscopes$^{(1)}$ , and spectrum sliced light source in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) system$^{(2)}$ . To utilize the inherent low loss in silica optical fibers, various types of incoherent light sources are being developed. Among the light sources, the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) from a rare earth doped fiber has benefits in temperature stability, high output power, low polarization dependence over semiconductor diodes$^{(3)}$ . Recently erbium doped fibers (EDF) have been intensively researched for ASE sources as well as optical amplifiers$^{(4)}$ . The spectrum of ASE from an EDF, however, is limited in the 1520~1560 nm range in conventional configurations. In this letter we described a new broadband ASE source which included both the conventional ASE band of Er$^{3+}$ ion, 1520nm~1560nm and ASE band from Tm$^{3+}$ ions that extends the bandwidth further. For the first time, to the best knowledge of authors, a fiber ASE source based on the energy transfer between Er$^{3+}$ and Tm$^{3+}$ ions in the range of 1460~1550 nm, has been demonstrated using a single 980nm pump laser diode.   • Centrigugal fans are widely used due to their ability to achieve relatively high pressure ratios in a short axial distance compared to axial fans. Because of their widespread use, the noise generated by these machines causes one of serious problems. In general, centrigugal fan noise is often dominated by tones at BPF(blade passage frequency) and its higher harmonics. This is a consequence of the strong interaction between the periodic flow discharged radially from the impeller and the stator blades or the cutoff. But in vacuum cleaner fan the noise is dominated by not only the discrete tones of BPF but also broadband frequencies. In this study we investigate the mechanism of broadband noise and predict for the unsteady flow field and the acoustic pressure field associated with the centrifugal fan. DVM(discrete vortex method) is used to calculates the flow field and the Lowson's method is used to predict the acoustic pressures. From the results we find that the broadband noise of a circular casing centrifugal fan is due to the unsteady force fluctuation around the impeller blades related to the vortex shedding. The unsteady forces associated with the shed vortices at impeller and related to the interactions to the diffuser and the exit.

  • A disturbance flow at piping bands and discontinuous regions such as a valve, a header has a intense broadband internal pressure field and a sound field which are propagated through the piping system The fields becomes the source of a vibration of this piping system. Intense broadband disturbance flow at a discontinuous region such as elbows, valves or headers generates an acoustical pulsation. The pulsation becomes the source of structural vibration at the piping system. If it coincides with the natural frequency of the pipe system, excessive vibration results. High-level vibration due to the pressure pulsation affects the reliability of the plant piping system. This paper discusses the high vibration and the branch vent pipe's failure of condensate-water supply piping system due to the effect of acoustical pulsations by flow turbulence from the flow control valves of globe type in a power site.

  • Over the range(OTR) has been applied for cooking and ventilation functions especially in northern Amarica. Because flow rate and operating rpm of the double sided sirocco fan for ventilation are much higher and than the microwave oven system, the major noise source is the sirocco fm. Recently, the quiet fan development is one of very important issues for amenity. In this study, the noise source identification using multi-microphone array system was carefully carried out and numerical simulations for understanding the aerodynamic and aeroacoustic of the fan were peformed. The sound level of tonal noise is predicted with a good accuracy but that of the broadband shows some discrepancy. In order to reduce the broadband noise, the inlet region of sirocco fan have to be modified that the secondary flow should be suppressed. Based on these results, new low noise fan and OTR is now developing.

Time Series Simulation of Explosive Charges In Shallow Water Using Ray Approach

  • A time series simulation is presented by a ray approach for the simulating the received waveform of a broadband acoustical signals interacting with the ocean boundaries. The environment is assumed to be horizontally stratified, and the seafloor is described in terms of homogeneous fluid half-space. The ray approach includes the effects of reflection from the air-water, water-sediment interface and phase shifts due to boundaries interaction. To generate time series, we assume that the acoustic energy propagates from source to receiver along eigenrays and represent the action of the bottom on the incident wave by a linear filter and characterized in the frequency domain by the transfer function. As example application, the time series for an explosive source in a shallow water environment is calculated and analyzed in terms of acoustical process. good agreement with measured time series is demonstrated.

An Amplified WDM-PON Using Broadband Light Source Seeded Optical Sources and a Novel Bidirectional Reach Extender

  • We demonstrated the feasibility of an amplified wavelength-division multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) architecture based on broadband light source (BLS) seeded optical sources and a novel bidirectional reach extender. Our bidirectional reach extender could provide an amplification of both downstream and upstream signals as well as a BLS output for the upstream WDM signal generation. An error-free 1.25 Gb/s signal transmission over a 100-km long single-mode fiber was achieved in a bidirectional WDM-PON using BLS seeded reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) sources.

  • We demonstrate a cost effective broadcast signal transmission at 1.25-Gb/s with 100 GHz channel spacing based on a broadband light source (BLS) for a wavelength division multiplexing-passive optical network (WDM-PON). The BLS is implemented by using mutually injected Fabry-Perot laser diodes (MI F-P LDs). The error-free transmission without a forward error correction (FEC) is achieved by its low relative intensity noise (RIN). The number of usable modes is determined by RIN and/or extinction ratio (ER) in the spectrum sliced light output.
