In this paper, we propose a broadband TEM horn antenna optimized using a genetic algorithm. The characteristics required for the TEM horn are the broad matching bandwidth from 2 GHz to 10 GHz and high gain in broadside with a small gain deviation within that bandwidth. In addition, a broadband balun is designed to improve the portability and to reduce the total size of the antenna. The measured return loss of the proposed TEM horn with the broadband balun is less than -10 dB(VSWR<2) from 2 GHz to 10 GHz. Compared to a conventional triangular type TEM horn, the proposed antenna shows about 80 % reduced volume and gives the broadside gain about 12 dBi with a gain deviation less than 6 dB from 2 GHz to 10 GHz. The time domain measurement shows less than 0.4 ns group delay and the pulse measurement using the transmitting signal with the rising time of 58.5 ps shows the received pulse with the rising time of 66.5 ps, which is less than 10 % rising time variation.
The broadcast environment is asymmetric communication aspect that is typically much greater communication capacity available from server to clients than in the opposite direction. In addition, most of mobile computing systems only allow the generation of read-only transactions from mobile clients for retrieving different types of information such as stock data, traffic information and news updates. Since previous concurrency control protocols, however, do not consider such a particular characteristics, the performance degradation occurs when those schemes are applied to the broadcast environment having quite a high data contention. In this paper, we propose OCC/2VTS (Optimistic Concurrency Control based on 2-Version and TimeStamp) that is most appropriate for broadcast environment. OCC/2VTS lets each client process and commit query transactions for itself by using two version data in cache. If the values of appropriate data items are not changed twice by invalidation report after a query transaction starts, the query transaction is committed safely independent of commitment of update transactions. OCC/2VTS decreases the number of informing server for the purpose of commitment. Due to broadcasting the validation reports including updated recent values, it reduces the opportunity of requesting a recent data values of server as well. As a result, OCC/2VTS makes full use of the asymmetric bandwidth. It also improves transaction throughput by increasing the query transaction commit ratio as much as possible.

In this paper, a method for the improvement in the gain and bandwidth of a microstrip-fed broadband planar quasi-Yagi antenna (QYA) is studied. The broadband characteristics of the QYA are achieved from the coplanar strip-fed planar dipole driver and a parasitic director close to the driver. In order to obtain stable gain variation over the required frequency band, a director and a ground reflector are appended to the driver having a nearby parasitic director. The QYA is fed through an integrated balun composed of a microstrip line and a slot line which are terminated in a short circuit. By adjusting the feeding point, a broadband impedance matching is obtained. A QYA with an operating frequency band of 1.75-2.7 GHz and a gain > 4.5 dBi is designed and fabricated on an FR4 substrate with dielectric constant of 4.4 and thickness of 1.6mm. The experimental results show that the fabricated antenna has good performance such as a broad bandwidth of 59.7%(1.55-2.87 GHz), a stable gain between 4.7-6.5 dBi, and a front-to-back ratio > 10 dB. The measured data agree well with the simulation, which validates this study.

The 16-port feed waveguide array with inductive walls analyzed by Galerkin's method of moments are proposed for the DBS reception system mounted on vehicle. First of all, in order to verify the validity of electromagnetic analysis and design for a $\pi$-junction feed waveguide, it is designed and fabricated at DBS band. The measurement results of a $\pi$-junction feed waveguide agree well with the theoretical ones. Based on this design method, an array design for WR-90 standard waveguide is conducted. Since the width of a $\pi$-junction feed WR-90 standard waveguide is larger than a guided wave length in an array design, the difference of amplitude and phase of 8-port array are calculated 2.3 dB and 62 degrees, respectively. The bandwidth with return loss of -20 dB below is about 220 MHz and it doesn't satisfy DBS band. To solve this problem, we propose a novel design that the width of a $\pi$-junction feed waveguide equals to a guided wave length. By the proposed novel design for 8-port feed waveguide array, the difference of amplitude and phase are decreased 1 dB and 13 degrees, respectively. The broad bandwidth of 700 MHz is also realized. The size of 16-port waveguide away compared with WR-90 array is reduced about 10 cm. The measured antenna gain for the fabricated 16-port feed waveguide array is observed 24 dBi above at DBS band.

Conventional eddy current testing has been used for the detection of the defect-like fatigue crack in the conductive materials, such as aluminum, which uses a sinusoidal signal with very narrow frequency bandwidth, Whereas, the pulsed eddy current method uses a pulse signal with a broad bandwidth. This can allow multi-frequency eddy current testing, and the penetration depth is greater than that of the conventional eddy current testing. In this work, a pulsed eddy current instrument was developed for evaluating the metal loss. The developed instrument was composed of the pulse generator generating the maximum square pulse voltage of 40V, an amplifier controlled up to 52dB, an A/D converter of 16 bit and the sampling frequency of 20 MHz, and an industrial personal computer operated by the Windows program. A pulsed eddy current probe was designed as a pancake type in which the sensing roil was located inside the driving roil. The output signals of the sensing roil increased rapidly wich the step pulse driving voltage かn off, and the latter part of the sensing coil output voltage decreased exponentially with time. The decrement value of the output signals increased as the thickness of the aluminum test piece increased.

In this paper, we designed, fabricated and tested an UHF band cylindrical dipole array antenna. In the proposed antenna, cylindrical dipoles were vertically arranged in four stages. A parallel structure feeding circuit was installed inside the cylindrical dipole and mounted so as to be broadband matching. The feeding circuit was installed at the center of the cylindrical dipole to optimize the gain flatness characteristic of the azimuth direction omnidirectional radiation pattern. Minimizing the difference between the signals branched from the feeding circuit and realizing the symmetry of the radiation pattern. The required specifications are more than 11.2% bandwidth in UHF band, above 6dBi antenna gain, standing wave ratio of 2:1 or less, less than ${\pm}1dB$ gain flatness in azimuth radiation pattern, more than 13 degrees in elevation radiation pattern of 3dB beamwidth. We confirmed the possibility of implementation through M&S and verified the result of M&S through production and testing. The test results are 11.2% bandwidth in the UHF band, 6.30 to 8.31 dBi gain, 1.53:1 standing wave ratio or less, within ${\pm}0.2dB$ gain flatness in the azimuth radiation pattern, elevation radiation pattern of 3dB beam width was 15.62 to 15.84 degrees. The test result meets all requirements specifications.

From 2010 to 2014, CQUEAN (Camera for QUasars in EArly uNiverse) has been operated for the observation at the 82 inch Otto Struve Telescope of the McDonald Observatory, US. This camera is optimized at wavelength range of 0.7 - 1.1 um with seven (g', r', I', z', Y, Iz and Is) broad-band filters for the survey of high redshift (z > 5) quasars in the early universe. We are upgrading this system to identify more details of SED (Spectral Energy Distribution) of quasar candidates and other astronomical sources. The SQUEAN is comprised of a focal reducer, a CCD camera, a new filter wheel, new auto guiding system and new control software. The new filter wheel consists of interchangeable cartridges for various wavelength and size of filters. 50 nm medium bandwidth filters from 600 - 1050 nm, seven SDSS (Sloan Digital Sky Survey) filters and Johnson-Cousin BVRI filters are installed for now. We also have a plan to use narrow band interference filters to classify high redshift quasars or to obtain SEDs of interesting astronomical sources in details more efficiently. We also developed KAP82 (Kyung Hee University Auto guiding Package for 82 inch telescope) for auto guiding software. CQUEAN and SQUEAN have been developed by CEOU (Center for the Exploration of the Origin of the Universe).
With a growing concern about the state of infrastructure worldwide, the demand for the development of reliable nondestructive testing techniques (NDT) is ever increasing. Among possible NDT techniques, microwave method is proven to be effective in fast and non-contact inspection of concrete structures and inclusions inside concrete. It is also found that the microwave method has a potential in detecting the delamination between fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) plate and concrete. On the other hand, ultrasonic method can be another way to find the delamination. In this paper, the research work needed for the development of a reliable microwave method and ultrasonic method is studied in the measurements of concrete specimens reinforced with FRP. Concrete specimens are made with FRP and artificial delamination inside. A microwave measurement system with hom antennas with high center frequency and broad frequency bandwidth are used to image inside concrete specimens for the detection of debonding between concrete and FRP. Also, ultrasonic method is used for the same condition. Both results are compared with each other.

A small monopole antenna with a novel impedance matching structure is proposed in this paper. The proposed antenna is designed for W-LAN(IEEE 802.11b). The antenna design concept is based on a ${\lambda}/8$ folded monopole antenna with a self-impedance matching structure. The size of the proposed antenna is smaller than the resonant length, thus the impedance at the terminal of the antenna becomes very capacitive. To compensate fur this impedance mismatching, the proposed antenna employs a novel self-impedance matching structure. The self-impedance matching structure is located on the top of the antenna; it improves the impedance matching and ultimately the efficiency of the antenna. The measured results of the proposed antenna show reasonable agreement with prediction.

The 1-3 piezoelectric composite transducer with 75 volume percents PZT was fabricated by the dicing-filling method. The resonance modes of the 1-3 transducer have been studied with electric impedance measurement as a function of frequency. The fundamental frequencies of the planar and thickness mode were observed at 0.95MHz and 1.63MHz respectively, but the lateral mode was not observed. In the thickness mode, the electromechanical coupling coefficient of the 1-3 piezoelectric composite transducer, 0.54, was very closed to that of the single phase PZT(0.52). The pulse-echo response by exciting the 1-3 transducer with an electric pulse was observed from the water/reflector interface, and analyzed bandwidth by the spectrum of the impulse response. The quality factor Q for the 1-3 transducer was observed as 1.5 smaller than that of the single phase(80) and then the 1-3 transducer may be used to the broad band type transducer applications.
