The Ting Kau Bridge in Hong Kong is a cable-stayed bridge comprising two main spans and two side spans. The bridge deck is supported by three towers, an end pier and an abutment. Each of the three towers consists of a single reinforced concrete mast which reduces its section in steps, and it is strengthened by transverse cables and struts in the transverse vertical plane. The bridge deck is supported by four inclined planes of cables emanating from anchorages at the tower tops. In view of the threat from typhoons, the dynamic behaviour of long-span cable-supported bridges in the region is always an important consideration in their design. This paper is devoted to the ambient vibration measurements of the bridge for evaluation of dynamic characteristics including the natural frequencies and mode shapes. It also describes the modelling of the bridge. A few finite element models are developed and calibrated to match with the field data and the results of subsequent structural health monitoring of the bridge.

Numerical analysis were performed to investigate the stability and internal movement of tunnel located beneath the base of abutment of bridge according to the method of supporting tunnel. Two supporting methods of the multi-staged grouting method with steel pipes and the large diameter of pipe supporting method were used in the centrifuge model tests. The slip form of model lining, specially built to simulate the process of tunnel excavating under the condition of accelerated g-level, was used in the centrifuge model tests. Four centrifuge model tests were performed, changing the supporting methods of the multi-staged grouting method with steel pipes and the large diameter of pipe supporting method and the location of model abutment base of bridge. For internal displacement of tunnel, movements of the crown. The left and the right sides of spring line were measured during the proceeds of excavating tunnel in centrifuge model tests. Test results were compared with numerically estimated values of internal displacement of tunnel by using the commercially available FEM software of PENTAGON-3D. It was found that they were in good agreements and the large diameter of pipe supporting method was more stable than the multi-staged grouting method with steel pipes with respect to the internal movement of tunnel.
The use of EPS application to construction field was introduced in this country very recently. Nevertheless, approximately a total of 210,000m3 of EPS application was conducted in less than four years. Main app.lication areas for the EPS method are : (1)backfill behind a bridge abutment constructed on soft clay soil, (2)embankment constructed on soft clay soil, and (3)backfill of gravity wall. Among these, about 70oA of EPS are used for (1) and (2) deb cribed above. In this study, an invesitgation was held for the application of the EPS method to backfill of a bridge abutment which was constructed on soft clay soil. Several instruments were installed around the construction site to invesitgate the behavior of the system. Then a Finite Element Analysis was conducted for comparison.
PURPOSE. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of canine guidance occlusion and group function occlusion on the degree of stress to the bone, implants, abutments, and crowns using finite element analysis (FEA). MATERIALS AND METHODS. This study included the implant-prosthesis system of a three-unit bridge made of monolithic zirconia and hybrid abutments. Three-dimensional (3D) models of a bone-level implant system and a titanium base abutment were created using the original implant components. Two titanium implants, measuring 4 × 11 mm each, were selected. The loads were applied in two oblique directions of 15° and 30° under two occlusal movement conditions. In the canine guidance condition, loads (100 N) were applied to the canine crown only. In the group function condition, loads were applied to all three teeth. In this loading, a force of 100 N was applied to the canine, and 200-N forces were applied to each premolar. The stress distribution among all the components of the implant-bridge system was assessed using ANSYS SpaceClaim 2020 R2 software and finite element analysis. RESULTS. Maximum stress was found in the group function occlusion. The maximum stress increased with an increase in the angle of occlusal force. CONCLUSION. The canine guidance occlusion with monolithic zirconia crown materials is promising for implant-supported prostheses in the canine and premolar areas.
A existing standard design section of transitional zone between bridge and earthwork section in high speed railway should be designed to gradually change support stiffness from bridge abutment to backfill side that were placed on cemented stabilized gravel, general gravel, soil materials. The larger the backfill slope of the general gravel and soil was more structurally stable, but there is no clear reason about them. In this study, it was compared with settlement and bearing capacity of backfill area in currently design and alternating backfill slope section using large centrifuge tester. As the experimental results, it was showed that the 1:2 slope and 1:1.5 slope have almost similar bearing capacity behavior under the load stage as railway loading level.

The surrounding ground was much transformed by the lateral movement on the soft ground, and consequently the stake basis was damaged. In this case the installed stake is ratted the passive stake, and is actively being researched. When the unevenly distributed load was applied on the stake, and thus the lateral ground pressure was operated, and then the lateral movement was occurred, and consequently the structure is influenced. However, prediction and mechanism for the relationship of piles and abutment deformation is not sufficient. In this paper, coupled three-dimensional finite element analysis, which can be described solid, plate and frame elements at the same time, is developed by the authors. The lateral movement of bridge abutment for the aspect ratio of steel piles on soft clay is clarified by using developed numerical analysis.

The main source of bridge destruction is due to scour. The bridge scour is the result of erosive action of flowing water taking away ground materials from near the abutment or pier. Furthermore, the water level must be also monitored whiling flooding, because it dangers not only the stability of bridge itself, but the safety of bridge users. This study is intended to develop a new measuring system for bridge scour by overcoming the current limitation of scour measurement technique. This measuring system is confirmed its excellence and validity through this study. The newly developed measuring system finds the distance between the water surface and the ground surface by detecting temperature difference along the abutment vertically. The measuring mechanism for monitoring the bridge scour and water level is based on identifying the temperature difference among mediums, including air, water and ground. In order to validate the new measuring system, the lab experiments and the field tests are conducted and compared. It has been confirmed that this system can effectively measure the bridge scour and the water level by analyzing the temperature distribution between mediums and the temperature variation over time.

Collapse behavior of Mission-Gothic Undercrossing under Northridge earthquake is studied by performing nonlinear time-history analysis and three-dimensional nonlinear finite element method for flared columns. Bridge structural model is characterized as three-dimensional with consideration of columns, superstructures, and abutment conditions. Three components of ground motion, corresponding to bridge's longitudinal, transverse, and vertical direction and their combinations are used to investigate bridge collapse. Studies indicate that bridge collapse is dominantly caused by transverse ground motion and the consideration of three-dimensional ground motion leads to a more accurate assessment. Failure mechanism of flared columns is analyzed applying nonlinear finite element method. Reduction of column capacity is observed due to orientation of flare. Further investigation demonstrates that the effects of flare play an important role in predicting of bridge failure mechanism. Suggestions are offered to improve the performance of bridges during severe earthquake.
Bridges are critical to the civil engineering infrastructure network as they facilitate movement of people, the transportation of goods and services. Given the aging of bridge infrastructure, federal officials mandate visual inspections biennially to identify necessary repair actions which are time, cost, and labor-intensive. Additionally, the expansion joints of bridges are rarely monitored due to cost. However, expansion joints are critical as they absorb movement from thermal effects, loadings strains, impact, abutment settlement, and vehicle motion movement. Thus, the need to monitor bridge expansion joints efficiently, at a low cost, and wirelessly is desired. This paper addresses bridge joint monitoring needs to develop a cost-effective, real-time wireless system that can be validated in a full-scale bridge structure. To this end, a wireless expansion joint monitoring was developed using commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) sensors. An in-service bridge was selected as a testbed to validate the performance of the developed system compared with traditional displacement sensor, LVDT, temperature and humidity sensors. The short-term monitoring campaign with the wireless sensor system with the internet protocol version 6 over the time slotted channel hopping mode of IEEE 802.15.4e (6TiSCH) network showed reliable results, providing high potential of the developed system for effective joint monitoring at a low cost.
The damages to the reinforced earth retaining wall are divided into the front wall, foundation, drainage and upper slope. Damage of reinforced earth retaining wall is mainly caused by damage caused by drainage problem in the field. Recently, damage caused by snow removal materials have been occurred. Recently, the amount of snow removal materials used in winter is increasing due to abnormal weather. This chlorides degrades the concrete structure, where the reinforced earth retaining wall was no exception. There has recently been a case in which the front wall of the reinforced earth retaining wall deteriorates due to the chlorides introduced into the back filling portion through the drainage passage. Therefore, in this study, the cause of damages of reinforced earth retaining wall constructed in bridge abutment was analyzed, and an analytical study was conducted on the countermeasure. As a result, it was found that chlorides, which was introduced through the drainage system in the expansion joint of the bridge shift part or the upper structure, is infiltrated into the back part of the reinforced earth retaining wall and damaged. Therefore, it is suggested to improve the drainage system and restored the stiffness of the front wall.
