The Effects of Online Brand Community Members' Interactions on Values, Participation, and Brand Loyalty: The Mediating Effects of Virtual Interactivity

  • Purpose: This study identified the effects of the three types of consumer interactions on the utilitarian and hedonic values experienced by community members, their degree of participation, and brand loyalty. In addition, the mediating effect of virtual interactivity between the interactions that occur within the online brand community and the value experienced by community members was also identified. Research design, data and methodology: An online survey was distributed, and the data gathered was analyzed using structural equations modeling. Results: Test results showed that product-information interaction has a positive effect on utilitarian value and interpersonal interaction has a positive effect on hedonic value. Human-computer interaction was found to have a negative effect on hedonic value and no significant effect on utilitarian value. Furthermore, it was revealed that among the three types of interactions, virtual interactivity had a mediating effect only in the relationship between human-computer interaction and hedonic value. Moreover, utilitarian values experienced by community members affected their level of participation which ultimately enhances brand loyalty. Hedonic value did not affect their level of participation within the online brand community. Conclusions: When marketers establish online brand community strategies, they must place elements that can directly help the use of brands and products.

  • The purpose of this study is 1) to analyze the clothing purchasing behavior according to gender 2) to analyze the characteristics provided by the fashion on-line community, 3) to analyze the effects of the fashion on-line community characteristics to community commitment and brand loyalty. As for data collection, on-line survey was conducted for the fashion online community members in 'daum' portal site and total 404 volumes were used for the study analysis. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, $x^2-test$, factor analysis, regression analysis by utilizing the SPSS 10.0 program. The results of this study were as follow: First, it was found that characteristics of fashion on-line community are three factors of 'interactivity', 'information provision' and 'interest provision'. Second, as the analysis result of the effects of the fashion on-line community characteristics to the community commitment and brand loyalty, the more 'interactivity' and 'interest provision', the higher 'behavioral commitment' and at this time brand loyalty was high. The higher 'interactivity', 'interest provision' and 'information provision', the higher attitudinal commitment and brand loyalty. In addition, the more 'information provision' and 'interest provision' were, the more it positively influenced brand loyalty. It is considered that this study will help fashion enterprises establish an on-line community strategy to induce brand loyalty by analyzing the community utilization pattern of fashion on-line community members.

의류 브랜드 커뮤니티의 이용욕구 충족과 커뮤니티 몰입의 관계: 의류 브랜드 이미지의 조절효과 (Relationship Between Usage Needs Satisfaction and Commitment to Apparel Brand Communities: Moderator Effect of Apparel Brand Image)

  • 본 연구는 의류 브랜드 온라인 커뮤니티의 이용욕구충족과 커뮤니티 몰입간의 관계 및 이들 관계에 대한 브랜드 이미지의 조절효과를 검증하는 것이다. 9개 캐주얼 의류 브랜드 커뮤니티 회원 317명을 대상으로 온라인 서베이를 실시하여 자료를 수집하였다. 다중회귀분석 결과, 의류 브랜드 커뮤니티에서의 이용욕구 충족은 커뮤니티에 대한 몰입과 유의한 관계가 있었다. 그리고 조절회귀분석 결과, 의류 브랜드 커뮤니티에서의 관계욕구 충족이 커뮤니티 몰입(감정적 몰입, 지속적 몰입, 규범적 몰입)에 영향을 미칠때 의류 브랜드 이미지 수준에 따른 조절효과가 작용함이 발견되었다. 또한 의류 브랜드 이미지의 조절효과는 의류 브랜드 커뮤니티에서의 거래욕구 충족과 커뮤니티에 대한 감정적 몰입의 관계에서도 나타났다. 특히 의류 브랜드 커뮤니티인 경우, 커뮤니티에서의 관계욕구 충족수준에 따른 커뮤니티 몰입의 정도는 브랜드 이미지가 낮을 때 보다 높을 때 더 크게 나타났다. 이것은 의류 브랜드 커뮤니티에서의 이용욕구 충족을 통해 회원들의 커뮤니티 몰입을 증대시키는 전략은 의류 브랜드 이미지 수준이 다른 의류 브랜드 유형에 따라 그 효과에 차이가 있음을 의미한다. 따라서 의류기업의 마케터들은 자사 브랜드의 이미지 수준을 평가하고, 이에 맞춰 커뮤니티 몰입을 증대시키는 전략을 모색할 필요가 있다. 브랜드 커뮤니티에 대한 몰입은 브랜드에 대한 구전이나 재구매 행동과 연결되므로, 명품 의류 브랜드들인 경우 온라인 브랜드 커뮤니티를 구축하고 회원들의 커뮤니티에 대한 몰입을 증대시킴으로써 브랜드 자산을 극대화시킬 수 있을 것이다.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of marketing activities to apparel brand community on interaction of the community. Subjects of 317 members for 9 selected apparel communities responded the questionnaire in the home-page or in the attached file. Data were analyzed by exploratory factor analysis, one-way ANOVA, scheffe-test. The results were as follows: Significant differences among three community groups classified based on the levels of interactions(interaction of company to members and interaction among members) were found in several types of marketing activities(award to activities, added services, conveyance of community's purpose and acceptance of negative responses) to apparel brand community. These types of marketing activities were operated in communities with high level interactions higher than in communities with low level interactions. Therefore, marketers need to operate these types of community marketing activities to increase interactions which can contribute members' satisfaction of interest, transaction and relationship needs through apparel brand online community.

  • Luxury companies are striving to improve their communication with customers while paying attention to online promotion and marketing activities. As companies interact with customers in luxury brand communities via various channels, they yield consumers higher value throughout the effective consumption process. In addition, this connection enhances customers' understanding of the company, making it easier for companies to acquire empathy from customers. This study aims to analyze the value factors that affect luxury brand community members' purchase intention and brand attitude. This study utilizes online survey results of four hundred prestige brand community users in China. The results reveal the positive effects of customer engagement on customer psychological empowerment and flow, the positive impacts of customer psychological empowerment and flow on community identity and brand attachment, the positive effects of community identity on purchase intentions, and the positive effects of brand attachment on purchase intentions and brand attitude. Furthermore, the results show that community types and fashion involvement partially moderate customer engagement. This study provides theoretical suggestions for relationship marketing in the luxury brand community environment. Last, this study presents practical implications that companies could utilize to create an emotional connection with their community members, resulting in an increase of customer support.

온라인 브랜드커뮤니티에서의 상호작용성 구성요인이 브랜드 자산에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Components of Interactivity on Brand Equity in on-line Brand Community)

  • 본 연구에서는 선행연구를 바탕으로 온라인 브랜드 커뮤니티 내에서의 상호작용성의 구성요인들을 종합적으로 도출하고, 이러한 구성요인들이 브랜드 커뮤니티에 대한 정서적 몰입을 매개로 하여 기업관점에서의 브랜드 커뮤니티의 궁극적 성과인 브랜드 자산의 구성요인들에 미치는 영향을 구조적으로 파악하고자 한다. 상호작용성은 4가지 구성요인 즉, 유연성 개인화 반응성 연결성으로 개념화 하였으며 브랜드 자산은 브랜드 연상, 브랜드인지, 브랜드 충성도로 구성하였다. 온라인 브랜드커뮤니티에 회원으로 가입하고 있는 부산지역 대학생 127명을 표본으로 실증 분석하였으며, 분석 결과, 개인화, 반응성, 유연성은 커뮤니티 몰입에 통계적으로 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으며 연결성은 유의적인 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 브랜드에 대한 정서적 몰입은 브랜드 자산의 3가지 구성요소, 즉 브랜드 연상 브랜드 인지, 브랜드 충성도에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다.

패션 브랜드 온라인 커뮤니티 특성이 고등학생의 커뮤니티 몰입에 미치는 영향 (The Impact of the Attributes of Fashion Brand Online Communities on High School Students' Commitment to the Community)

  • The purpose of this study was to clarify the factors that characterize the fashion brand online communities that have a high participation rate among high school students, and to determine the impact of those factors on the high school students' commitment to the community, especially in relation to their demographics. The study was implemented through a descriptive survey method using an online questionnaire. The sample consisted of 301 members of online fashion brand communities operated on the Daum portal site. The data were analyzed by frequency, factor analysis, and regression analysis. The results are as follows: (1) Factor analysis revealed that the characteristics of a fashion brand online community are associated with three factors ; compensation/interest, interactivity, and information. (2) Regression analysis showed that the more compensation/interest, opportunity for interaction, and information the community provides, the more likely high school student members are to show a higher level of commitment to the community. (3) There was no difference in the effect of community attribute factors on the high school student members' commitment to the community according to gender. The group of students majoring in human and liberal education was the most influenced by the attributes of fashion brand online communities. The interactivity factor had a greater impact on the group of students majoring in art and physical education than on the other groups. The greater the use of the Internet, the greater the impact of community attributes on commitment. (4) In the process of developing an online community, marketers should fully consider the fact that information factors have the biggest impact on high school students' commitment to the community. Therefore, greater effort should be made to differentiate between community attributes based on high school students' majors and their amount of Internet use in order to motivate commitment to the community and brand loyalty as well.

Brand Equity Comparison of Local and International Fast Food Operations between Korea and the Philippines

  • This study compares brand equity of the fast food industry between Korea and the Philippines. This comparison is conducted by measuring a price premium that the college students in both countries would pay for hamburgers. Three popular fast food chains in each country, Lotteria, McDonalds', and Burger King in Korea and Jollibee, McDonalds', and Burger King in the Philippines, were chosen for the study. Utilizing a brand-based comparative approach, the findings of the study indicated that Burger King showed the highest brand equity for the premium brand image in both countries, whereas both local brands had a lower brand equity compared to international brands. The results of the study provide useful information for international and local brand managers that wish to establish strategies for a brand image, as well as to manage brand equity effectively.   • Internet brand community's message makes significant contributions for fashion industry. Therefore, if we understand and implement the characteristics of the message on the Internet brand's community, it can be useful for future marketing strategy. This study was to classified the internet community and to examine messages with regard to direction, write motive and prior knowledge. The messages were taken from February, 20th, to August, 7th in 2008. Content analysis method was used for this study. The results were as follows: First, Fashion brand community divided into user initiative type and enterprise establishing type. Second, User initiative type had positive direction message more than enterprise establishing type had. Third, User initiative type had large volumes of information searching or sharing related message, but enterprise establishing type had large quantities of personal experience related message about write motive. Fourth, There was no difference numerical prior knowledge between user initiative type and enterprise establishing type, and then both had a high rate of prior knowledge.

패밀리 레스토랑 브랜드 아이덴티티가 소비자의 구매의도에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Family Restaurant Brand Identity on the Purchase Intention of Consumer)

  • As multinational brands have made inroads into domestic food service industry, and its recognition has been high to consumers, This research has tried to examine the general identity of brand, their recognition, and re-purchase behaviors. The purpose of this study is to inquire into how the brand value by brand identity was caused by recent development of food service industry, and how it had an effect on the purchase behaviors of them. In particular, factors of general identity have a significant effect on the revisit and purchase intention, as the image and ads of family restaurant among brand property factors of family restaurant showed an significant effect on the revisit intention. This study was made with priority given to the brand identity as four brand factors such as product brand, organizational brand, community brand and design brand based on the confidence. Results found that the community brand and design brand had a significant difference on purchase intention. Consequently, it has been suggested that the marketing strategies to make the brand identity strong have to be established with various brand enhancement tactics in the food service industry.
