Prostate cancer initially responds and regresses in response to androgen depletion therapy, but most human prostate cancers will eventually recur, and re-grow as an androgen independent tumor. Once these tumors become hormone refractory, they usually are incurable leading to death for the patient. Little is known about the molecular details of how prostate cancer cells regress following androgen ablation and which genes are involved in the androgen independent growth following the development of resistance to therapy. Such knowledge would reveal putative drug targets useful in the rational therapeutic design to prevent therapy resistance and control androgen independent growth. The application of genome scale technologies have permitted new insights into the molecular mechanisms associated with these processes. Specifically, we have applied functional genomics using high density cDNA microarray analysis for parallel gene expression analysis of prostate cancer in an experimental xenograft system during androgen withdrawal therapy, and following therapy resistance, The large amount of expression data generated posed a formidable bioinformatics challenge. A novel template based gene clustering algorithm was developed and applied to the data to discover the genes that respond to androgen ablation. The data show restoration of expression of androgen dependent genes in the recurrent tumors and other signaling genes. Together, the discovered genes appear to be involved in prostate cancer cell growth and therapy resistance in this system. We have also developed and applied tissue microarray (TMA) technology for high throughput molecular analysis of hundreds to thousands of clinical specimens simultaneously. TMA analysis was used for rapid clinical translation of candidate genes discovered by cDNA microarray analysis to determine their clinical utility as diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic targets. Finally, we have developed a bioinformatic approach to combine pharmacogenomic data on the efficacy and specificity of various drugs to target the discovered prostate cancer growth associated candidate genes in an attempt to improve current therapeutics.
Deep seawater (DSW; deep ocean water) is pure, rich in inorganic materials which have attracted attention for various applications. In this study we investigated the effects of the DSW upwelled from the East Sea, offshore Yang Yang (Korea) on the morphological differentiation of cultured rat hippocampal neurons, which were grown in the minimal essential medium containing 10% (v/v) fetal bovine serum and 25% (v/v) DSW with various hardness. DSW had no effect on initial morphological differentiation (17 hr post-plating). When observed on DIV3, 7, 14, and 17, low hardness (0 and 200) DSW reduced dendritic branching. However, dendritic branches within $80\;{\mu}m$ diameter from the center of soma nearly doubled in neurons grown in hardness 1,000 DSW-containing media. DSW with hardness 600 was more or less same as control groups. These results indicate that DSW with appropriate hardness ameliorates neuronal health.
The Chemical Control Act of 2015 was enhanced to ensure the safe management of hazardous chemicals. In particular, there have been substantial changes in the standards for the installation and management of handling facilities for manufacturing and storing hazardous chemicals. However, some standards for handling facilities are difficult to implement due to a lack of physical space or because of safety accidents during facility improvements. Therefore, the Safety assessment system (SAS) has been operating for such facilities since 2018. This study developed a leakage trajectory evaluation module that can easily evaluate the outside of a dike for safety evaluation. We analyzed two case studies on a dike for hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid storage tanks with this module and suggest a reasonable plan for the facility. We believe that it will be possible to more easily submit SAS reports at chemical plants by using this evaluation module. This study is expected to contribute to the improvement of the safety design of hazardous chemical handling facilities.

Various social problems such as traffic congestion, car accidents and environmental problems(air pollution, noises etc.) have been happening in the Seoul metropolitan area that has the car oriented traffic system providing cars continuously. Along with this, the financial burden caused by current oil price anxiety made paradigm shift from caroriented to public transportation-oriented. Its typical example is an arterial branch bus system changing(bus lane through the center of main road) started in Seoul in July, 2004. But study on safety analysis of bus lane and characteristic of accidents are not sufficient enough to now. The bus lanes are expanded to provide roads for better traffic operation and accidents between buses and pedestrians or ordinary vehicles are considered main problems. This study divided each bus route of median bus lane(bus-only lane through the center of main roads) and bus lane at roadside by intersection and collected and analysed data about influence variables of bus accidents chosen in each section. We constructed a logistic model using collected data. As a result, bus lane at roadside are used by both buses and other kinds of vehicles differently from median bus lane and showed such characteristic in accident influence. Therefore access management to factors causing conflict and improvement of operation management are required. In case of median bus lane, the more buses moving general vehicle lane and traffic volume of section were, the more accidents happened. In case that stop line of center lane is not backward, view blocking of vehicles turning left caused accidents.

OFDM communications system is very attractive for the high data rate wireless transmission. However, it may be distorted in the nonlinear HPA since OFDM signal has high PAPR. So, a new SLM method using dummy sequence is studied for reducing the PAPR, and we call it DSI-SLM method. Unlike the conventional SLM method using the phase rotation, dummy sequences for PAPR reduction are assigned at the predefined sub-carriers. After IFFT, the OFDM data signal of the lowest PAPR is selected to transmit. So, it can cut down the computational complexity because it does not require the transmission and demodulation process of side information about the phase rotation. This proposed method can solve the time delay problem so that PAPR reduction can be made in real time processing.
In this study we investigated antioxidant activity of against several free radicals and skin whitening effect of 70% ethanol extract (leaf extracts and branch/stem mixed) of Lindera obtusiloba BL. Antioxidant activity was assessed by DPPH, superoxide radical and hydroxyl radical assays. The Lindera obtusiloba BL. extract had antioxidant activity dose dependently with an ${IC}_{50}$ value of 243.14 and 181.10 ${\mu}g$/ml for DPPH, 165.77 and >1500 ${\mu}g$/ml for non-enzymatic system of superoxide radical assay, 35.47 and >100 ${\mu}g$/ml for enzymatic system of superoxide radical assay, 1.21 mg/ml for hydroxyl radical assay. In addition we tested tyrosinase inhibition activity and melanin contents on B16 melanoma F10. B16 melanoma cell was treated by such sample as 1, 5, 10 and 50 ${\mu}g$/ml for 72 hr and tyrosinase inhibition was tested. Melanogenesis was inhibited to 22% at the dose of 50 ${\mu}g$/ml and tyrosinase was inhibited to 45.2% at the same dose. In conclusion Lindera obtusiloba BL had potent antioxidant activity and inhibitory activity of tyrosinase and melanin formation. It could be developed as the health functional food and functional cosmetic resources.
We have developed ellipsometry lidar and measured aerosol and ice-cloud characteristics. To measure a full normalized backscattering phase matrix (NBSPM) composed of nine elements, we have designed an optical system with three kinds of transmission and three kinds of reception, composed of ${\lambda}/2$ waveplate, ${\lambda}/4$ waveplate and empty optic. To find systematic optical errors, we used clean day middle-altitude (4-6km) lidar signals for which the aerosol's concentration was small and its orientation chaotic. After calibrating our lidar system, we have calculated NBSPM elements scattered from an aerosol and from an ice cloud. In the case of an aerosol, we found that the off-diagonal values $m_{12},{\ldots},m_{34}$ of the NBSPM are smaller than those for a cirrus cloud. Also, the off-diagonal values of the NBSPM from a cirrus cloud depend on atmospheric conditions.

The efficient Viterbi decoder that supports full data-rate output of DAB system was proposed. Viterbi decoder consumes lots of computational load and should be designed to be fast specific hardware. In this paper, SST scheme was adopted for Viterbi decoder with puncturing to reduced the power consumption. Puncturing vector tables are modified and re-arranged to be designed by a hardwired logic to save the system area. New re-scaling scheme which uses the fact that the difference of the maximum and minimum of the path metric values is bounded is proposed. The proposed re-scaling scheme optimizes the wordlength of path metric memory and greatly reduces the computational load for re-scaling by controlling MSB of path metric memory. Another saving of computation is done by proposed algorithm for branch metric calculation, which makes use of pre-calculated metric values. The designed Viterbi decoder was synthesized using SAMSUNG 0.35$\mu$ standard cell library and occupied small area and showed lower power consumption.

In this paper, we analyze the performance of multiple trellis coded modulation applied to continuous phase frequency shift keying (MTCM/CPFSK) for the noncoherent receiver without channel state information (CSI) on the interleaved Rician fading channel. In this system, the squared cross-correlation between the received signal and a candidate signal is used as the branch metric of the Viterbi decoder. To obtain the bit error performance of this system, we analyze the approximated pairwise error probability (PEP) and the exact PEP. We also derive the equivalent normalized squared distance (ENSD) and compare it with the ENSD of the noncoherent receiver with perfect CSI. Simulation results are also provided to verify the theoretical performance analysis.

In order to analysis of the water pollution of the Anyang stream(one of the biggest branch streams of the Han River) and its main tributaries, the geological and topographical and rainfall features in its basin were investigated. To do this, the water samples were collected 23 points of the upper, mid and down of Anyang stream and its tributaries and were analyzed based on the chemical methods, Korean Biotic Index(KBI) and Saprobien systems. The Anyang stream basin has a characteristic of topographical torrential heavy rainfall like a typical rainfall feature in Korea. The concentration and the outflow rate of rainfall is very different in seasonal, and water pollution in dry season is especially severe. After 1997, although the water quality status of stream has been improved gradually, the concentration of T-N and SS at the upstream is increased due to the deficiency of facility used for collecting wastewater released from industrial factories, livestock farms and residential areas. The mainstream of the Anyang stream is classified into the 5th grade water as polysaprobic water area according to Saprobien system and the biotic index is over 2.5 in overall. Most of tributaries have 1~3 grade water limit with ${\alpha}$- and ${\beta}$-mesosaprobic except the upper and mid streams of Samsung tributary, in which pollution status is the lowest part. Though Sambong tributary is ${\alpha}$-mesosaproboic, biotic index is low because of the appearance of abundant benthos animals in farming and fishing villages.
