A flow visualization study was carried out for the branch pipe mixing flow in which a jet was issued normally to the fully developed pipe flow. An instantaneous laser tomographic method was used for cross flow Reynolds numbers based on the cross flow diameter D ranged $Re_{cf}=5.26{\times}10^3{\sim}1.13{\times}10^4$, diameter ratios d/D = 0.1 ~ 0.2 and velocity ratios R = 0.5 ~ 10. Oil mist with the size of about $10{\mu}m$ diameter was used for the scattering particle. The main purpose of this study was to reveal the physical mechanism and the structure of vortices formation with varying the velocity ratios and diameter ratios in the branch pipe flow. It was found that the physical mechanism and the structures of vortices formation were quite different depending on the velocity ratios. Particularly in the case of R < 1, the typical vortex shows single loop shape and that for the case of R > 1 depicts mushroom-like structure in the cross flow jet.

Conditional branch instructions are a major obstacle to the increasing of RISC processor performance, because they can break the smooth flow of instructions; the issuing of instructions after a branch instruction must often wait until the condition is resolved. This paper proposes a hardware scheme which has a duplicated fetching logic to reduce the penalty imposed by conditional branch instructions. The proposed shceme has a buffer to maintain states of processor, which supports the precise interrupt. We make use of two code segments to test the performance and their results were compared with those of the delayed branch. We got the result that the proposed scheme reduces the branch penalty extremely.
Purpose: As the soft tissue defect around the knee is difficult to reconstruct, local flap or free flap is used. Distally based anterolateral thigh pedicled flap introduced by Zhang uses sufficient reverse flow supplied from the vascular network around the knee. We report successful reconstruction of defect around knee by this method. Methods: Four patients with skin & soft tissue defect around knee have been treated for reconstruction using the distally based anterolateral thigh pedicled flap. First, the doppler was used to check the perforator flap of the descending branch of the lateral circumflex femoral artery and to draw and dissect the perforator flap as much as needed. After the dissection, the proximal of the descending branch was clamped and checked for sufficient supply of blood flow from the reverse flow and then ligated. It was dissected along the descending branch and in order to prevent damage to the joined parts of the descending branch and the lateral superior geniculate artery, a more careful ligation was done starting from 10 cm superior to the knee. The defect was reconstructed after securing enough vascular pedicle to cover all the damaged parts. Results: Not all patients suffered from flap necrosis. In case of the patient with chronic osteomyelitis, slight venous congestion was observed right after the surgery but it disappeared the following day. All three patients had no occurences of additional complications. Conclusion: Distally based anterolateral thigh pedicled flap was enough to provide large flap for knee reconstruction. It had sufficient blood flow and vascular pedicle. It also had taken short operation time compared to the free flap operation. The distally based anterolateral thigh pedicled flap used by the authors is a very useful way of reconstructing the area around knee.
Different from the conventional planar fracture and simplified Newton model, for power-law slurries with a lower water-cement ratio commonly used in grouting engineering, flow model in geological rough fractures is built based on ten standard profiles from Barton (1977) in this study. The numerical algorithm is validated by experimental results. The flow mechanism, grout superiority, and water plugging of pseudo plastic slurry are revealed. The representations of hydraulic grouting properties for JRCs are obtained. The results show that effective plugging is based on the mechanical mechanisms of the fluctuant structural surface and higher viscosity at the middle of the fissure. The formulas of grouting parameters are always variable with the roughness and shear movement, which play a key role in grouting. The roughness can only be neglected after reaching a threshold. Grouting pressure increases with increasing roughness and has variable responses for different apertures within standard profiles. The whole process can be divided into three stationary zones and three transition zones, and there is a mutation region (10 < JRCs < 14) in smaller geological fractures. The fitting equations of different JRCs are obtained of power-law models satisfying the condition of -2 < coefficient < 0. The effects of small apertures and moderate to larger roughness (JRCs > 10.8) on the permeability of surfaces cannot be underestimated. The determination of grouting parameters depends on the slurry groutability in terms of its weakest link with discontinuous streamlines. For grouting water plugging, the water-cement ratio, grouting pressure and grouting additives should be determined by combining the flow conditions and the apparent widths of the main fracture and rough surface. This study provides a calculation method of grouting parameters for variable cement-based slurries. And the findings can help for better understanding of fluid flow and diffusion in geological fractures.

This paper considers a two-machine flow-shop scheduling problem for minimizing mean flow time. Each job has three non-preemptive operations, where the first and third operations must be Processed on the first and second machines, respectively, but the second operation can be processed on either machine. A lower bound based on SPT rule is derived, which is then used to develop a branch-and-bound algorithm. Also, an efficient simple heuristic algorithm is developed to generate a near-optimal schedule. Numerical experiments are performed to evaluate the performances of the proposed branch-and-bound and the heuristic algorithm

A general flow distribution model and a simple process of numerical analysis, which can be applied to multi-pass systems with manifolds, are presented. Correlations are derived from the discrete model, and numerically calculated using a modified equal pressure method. The predicted pressure distribution agrees well with the available experimental results of other researchers with the average error less than 2% for 10 branch manifolds, and 4% for 20 branch manifolds. A parametric study is performed to demonstrate the effect on the flow distribution.

This paper numerically investigates the effects of pass arrangement on the flow distribution characteristics and the performance of a multi-pass multi-branch heat exchanger. Four cases of pass arrangement (2, 4, 6, 8 pass) are chosen to select a proper pass arrangement. A JF factor is used as an evaluation characteristic value to consider the heat transfer and the pressure drop. The present results indicate that 4-pass heat exchanger shows the best performance, and the design parameters in 4-pass heat exchanger are optimized. The design parameters are the locations of the inlet, outlet and separator, and are optimized using a response surface methodology. The JF factor of the optimum model is increased by about 9.3%, compared to that of the reference model (2-pass heat exchanger).
The fluid-flow characteristics of flue-gas-recirculation (FGR) system can have a significant effect on system efficiency of a sintering plant. The flow characteristics in the system were investigated. A sintering plant with FGR system was modeled. Numerical visualization was performed and flow characteristics were analyzed. Characteristics of the flow distribution of the branch ducts, the inflow of air into the recirculating hood, and the flow in the hood were discussed. Based on the results three suggestions were proposed: (1) distribution of branch duct flowrate upstream, (2) installation of external air ducts in the hood, and (3) installation of baffles at the hood corners. The suggestions were tested numerical and experimental visualization methods. The suggestions were effective and confirmed to be applicable to the actual sinter plant.

Pipeline hazard due to branch instructions is the major factor of the degradation on the performance of microprocessors. Branch target buffer predicts whether a branch will be taken or not and supplies the address of the next instruction on the basis of that prediction. If the branch target buffer predicts correctly, the instruction flow will not be stalled. This leads to the better performance of microprocessor. In this paper, the architecture of a tag memory that branch target buffer and TLB can share is presented. Because the two tag memories used for branch target buffer and TLB each is replaced by single shared tag memory, we can expect the smaller ship size and the faster prediction. This hared tag architecture is more advantageous for the microprocessors that uses more bits of address and exploits much more instruction level parallelism.

An experimental study has been carried out to obtain optimal conditions for turbulent mixing of two fluid streams at various angle branches by a flow visualization method. The main purpose of this study is the utilization of flow visualization method as a fast and efficient way to find the optimal mixing conditions when several flow control parameters are superimposed. It is verified that the optimal conditions estimated by flow visualization method have good agreement with the concentration field measurements. The results demonstrate that the diameter ratio is mainly attributed to the mixing phenomena than the branch pipe angle and the Reynolds number. The most striking fact is that there exists the best diameter ratio, d/D.ident. O.17, which requires the minimum momentum ratio in the range of the present experiment. The velocity ratio for the optimal mixing condition has a value within 2 to 16 according to the different flow parameters.
