Influence of Disk Mass with regard to Frictional Characteristics of Brake Disk for Rolling Stock (디스크 질량 변화에 따른 철도차량용 제동디스크의 마찰 특성)

  • Low alloy heat resistant brake disk and sintered brake pad are applied to mechanical brake system for the speed-up of urban rapid transit. In this research, we analyzed how the frictional characteristics between brake disk and pad are influenced by the disk mass. At a high disk mass, the friction stability was the lower value as a result of the lack of tribofilm formation at the disk surface. Wear rates of friction materials showed the higher value at a low disk mass and wear rates of 10 mm and 15 mm showed the similar level. Average friction coefficient was the lower value at the 10 mm disk thickness and range of variation of average friction coefficient was also the smaller value at the 10 mm disk thickness. However, there were no significant changes in the friction coefficients under any of test conditions. Surface roughness of a disk showed the highest value at the 5 mm disk and surface roughnesses of 10 mm and 15 mm showed the similar level. As a result, friction characteristics of disk mass influenced the friction stability, as well as the wear rate of friction pad and disk, but not the friction coefficient.

  • In automotive disc brake systems, frictional heat is not uniformly dispersed for reasons such as heat flux and thermal deformation. The thermoelastic deformation due to the frictional heat affects the contact pressure distribution and the contact load may be concentrated on the contact portion on the the disc brake surface, resulting in thermoelastic instability. In this study, thermal analysis and thermal deformation analysis considering the contact between disk and pad occurred during braking through 3D axial symmetry model with reference to the experimental equation and Kao's analysis method of contact pressure of disk and pad. ANSYS is used to analyze the thermal and elastic instability problems occurring at the contact surface between the disk and the pad, considering both the thermal and mechanical loads. A 3D axisymmetric model with direct contact between the disk and the pad was constructed to more accurately observe the thermal behavior of the disk by observing the frictional surface temperature, thermal deformation and contact thermal stress of the disk.

  • Disc brakes and brake linings are part of the braking system in automobiles; this system works due to the braking power between the disc and pad. Vehicle braking systems have complex environments due to the geometry of the disk and pad, the material properties, the braking conditions, etc. Braking energy is converted into thermal energy during the braking process, due to the frictional heat between the disc brake and pad. This heat is changed to a heat flux, which affects the thermal stress of the disc. The purpose of this study was to use the fluid dynamics software ANSYS CFX to investigate the inner flow characteristics of the air and the heat transfer of the disc, and to analyze the effects on the thermal stress of the disc brake.

  • In the case of axisymmetric thermal analysis of drum brakes, the distribution of frictional heat produced on the interface and temperature difference between mating frictional faces are very interesting problems to computational researchers. In this paper, heat conduction from the interface to the pad and the drum was modeled by using a thin interface element, so artificial division of the generated frictional heat between pad and drum is not necessary. Temperature difference between mating frictional faces is successfully modeled by using the interface element. The influence of some parameters on tile thermal stress was checked. The analysis was performed by ABAQUS/Standard code.

In the first part, the influence of the s-cam load angles and elastic modulus of the pad on the contact pressure distribution between pad and drum was checked by a three dimensional model.   • The disc-pad brake system is an important part of automobile safety system. During braking, the kinetic energy and potential energies of a moving vehicle are converted into the thermal energy through frictional heat between the brake disc and the pads. Most of the thermal energy dissipated through the brake disc. The temperature could be exceed the critical value for a given material, which leads to undesirable effects, such as the brake fade, premature wear, brake fluid vaporization, bearing failure, thermal cracks, and thermallyexcited vibration. The object of the present study is to investigate temperature field and temperature variation of brake disc and pad during single brake. The brake disc is decelerated at the initial speed with constant acceleration, until the disc comes to stop. The pad-disc brake assembly is built by 3D model with the appropriate boundary condition. In the simulation process, the mechanical loads are applied to the thermomechanical coupling analysis in order to simulate the process of heat produced by friction.

  • Optimum cross-sectional shape of an automotive disc brake was developed based on FEM thermal analyses and the Taguchi method. Frictional heat flux and convection heat transfer coefficients were first calculated using equations and applied to the disc to calculate accurate temperature distribution and thermal deformations under realistic braking conditions. Maximum stress was generated in an area with highest temperature under pads and near the hat of ventilated disc and vanes. The SN ratio from Taguchi method and MINITAB was applied to obtain the optimum cross-sectional design of a disc brake on the basis of thermal deformations. The optimum cross-section of a disc can reduce thermal deformation by 15.2 % compared to the initial design.

  • The role of brake is safely to transport passenger & cargo and stop vehicles at emergency in railway vehicle. Brake system reduces the speed by control command of electricity or air. mechanical methods to perform brake are disk brake & tread brake. This study targeted development of highly efficient sintered alloy brake shoe in railway vehicle whose high frictional coefficient, wear resistance, compatibility of the existing tread brake shoe & minimization of wheel's thermal damage and performed development of friction material's formulation, analysis of pressure distribution in wheel tread & brake shoe, optimum form design through analysis of heat flow.

  • A three dimensional transient thermo-elastic frictional contact analysis of airplane brakes is performed. The velocity history of the airplane during braking is calculated from energy conservation law. ABAQUS code is used in the analysis, and user subroutines supported in the ABAQUS are coded to calculate the frictional heat generation between pads and linings attached to back/pressure plate and rotor, respectively. Numerical results are compared with experimental ones.
