Aluminum Nanoparticles Induce ERK and p38MAPK Activation in Rat Brain

  • Aluminum nanoparticles (Al-NPs) are one of the most widely used nanomaterial in cosmetics and medical materials. For this reason, Al-NP exposure is very likely to occur via inhalation in the environment and the workplace. Nevertheless, little is known about the mechanism of Al-NP neurotoxicity via inhalation exposure. In this study, we investigated the effect AL-NPs on the brain. Rats were exposed to Al-NPs by nasal instillation at 1 mg/kg body weight (low exposure group), 20 mg/kg body weight (moderate exposure group), and 40 mg/kg body weight (high exposure group), for a total of 3 times, with a 24-hr interval after each exposure. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis indicated that the presence of aluminum was increased in a dose-dependent manner in the olfactory bulb (OFB) and the brain. In microarray analysis, the regulation of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) activity (GO: 0043405), including Ptprc, P2rx7, Map2k4, Trib3, Trib1, and Fgd4 was significantly over-expressed in the treated mice than in the controls (p = 0.0027). Moreover, Al-NPs induced the activation of ERK1 and p38 MAPK protein expression in the brain, but did not alter the protein expression of JNK, when compared to the control. These data demonstrate that the nasal exposure of Al-NPs can permeate the brain via the olfactory bulb and modulate the gene and protein expression of MAPK and its activity.

뉴로피드백 훈련이 고등학생의 일반적 건강수준, 정신건강과 문제행동 및 뇌기능 지수에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of the Neurofeedback training on the General health status, Mental health and problem behavior, and Brain function quotient among High school students)

  • 최근 청소년기의 이환율과 사망률, 정신건강과 문제행동의 위험 수준이 심각하나 적절한 중재가 없는 실정이다. 이에 본 유사실험 연구는 뉴로피드백 훈련이 고등학생의 일반적 건강수준, 정신건강과 문제행동 및 뇌기능 지수에 미치는 영향을 확인하였다. 뉴로피드백 훈련은 2012년 9월부터 12월, 주 2회(총 20회)에 걸쳐 방과 후 교내 컴퓨터실에서 훈련된 연구자 1인에 의해 진행되었으며 구조화된 설문지와 뇌기능 프로그램을 이용하여 자료수집하였다. 대상자는 S시 I고등학교에 재학 중인 고등학생으로, 대조군 6명과 실험군 5명이 최종 분석되었다. 자료는 SPSS 20.0을 이용하여 정규성 검정 후 paired t-test와 Wilcoxon signed rank test로 효과 검증하였다. 뉴로피드백 훈련 결과, 일반적 건강수준, 정신건강과 문제행동은 유의미한 차이는 없었으나 통계적으로 향상되었고, 뇌기능 지수 가운데 정서지수와 좌 우 육체적, 정신적 스트레스 저항지수가 두 군 간에 통계적으로 유의미한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다.

다중 CT 검사 시 개인선량계를 이용한 갑상선, 유방, 생식선의 피폭선량 (Exposure Dose of Thyroid, Breast, and Sexual Gland using a Personal Dosimeter in Multiple CT Examinations)

  • 본 연구에서는 현재 건강검진에서 시행되고 있는 다중 CT 검사 시 개인선량계를 이용하여 갑상선, 유방, 생식선의 피폭선량에 대한 선량평가를 시행하였다. 선량평가는 CT 항목 중 Brain, Brain + C-S, Brain + Low lung, Brain + L-S CT 검사 시 갑상선, 유방, 생식선의 위치에 TLD와 EPD를 부착하여 측정하였다. 기기 발생선량인 CTDIvol, DLP를 측정하였다. 연구결과 유효 선량은 일반인 연간 선량한도 1mSv보다 Brain + C-S CT 검사 시 갑상선 TLD 41.7%, EPD 156%, Brain + Low lung CT 검사 시 유방 EPD 10%, Brain + L-S CT 검사 시 생식선 TLD 124.4%, EPD 339.8% 높게 평가되었다. 전체 평균값에 대한 CTDIvol, DLP 분석결과 진단참조수준 보다 C-S CTDIvol 값은 0.6%, Low lung CTDIvol 값은 5.7%, DLP 값은 11.8%, L-S CTDIvol 값은 1.2%로 높게 평가되었다. 환자의 피폭선량 감소를 위해 무분별한 검사를 줄이고, 건강검진에서의 선량한도 설정이 필요하다.

리보플라빈이 뇌조직이 지방과 신경전달 물질대사에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Riboflavin on the Metabolism of Lipids and Neurotransmitter in Rat Brain)

  • Rats were fed for an 8-week period a low riboflavin diet(5ug riboflavin/day) or a control diet(30ug/day) supplied either ad libitum or by pair feeding in order to study the effect of riboflavin on the metabolism of lipids and neurotransmitters. Erythrocyte glutathione reductase (EGR) and monomine oxidase(MAO) activity in the liver and brain were assayed. EGR activity coefficient in riboflavin deficient rats was significantly higher than in ad libitum controls whereas MAO activity was decreased in the deficient rats. Fatty acid composition showed a different trend in the serum, liver and brain. In the serum, the concentrations of essential fatty acids and $\omega$-3 fatty acids(eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid)were decreased about 20-40% in the deficient and pair-fed than in the ad libitum controls. Brain serotonin and 5-HIAA(5-hydroxyindole acetic acid) concentrations were decreased in the riboflavin deficient rats. Learning ability measured by a water maze and exploratory activity using the open field test were not impaired in the deficient rats. These results indicate that brain lipid metabolism was protected in subclinical riboflavin deficiency, however, riboflavin deficiency affected brain serotonin content.

Brachial Plexus Injuries in Adults with Traumatic Brain Injury : A Retrospective Study

  • Objective : We aimed to investigate the presence of brachial plexus injury (BPI) in traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients and to draw attention to BPI, which can be overlooked by physicians in TBI patients. Methods : The study was designed retrospectively by examining the files of 58 patients with moderate to severe TBI to investigate coexistence of TBI and BPI. Results : BPI was detected in six of 58 TBI patients (10.3%). BPI was detected after an average 116 days from the initial injury. Three patients had lower trunk BPI and three patients had panplexopathy. Conclusion : Diagnosis of BPI in patients with TBI is delayed in the acute period of injury. The clinicians should keep in mind that BPIs may occur and remain undiagnosed in patients with TBI.

Revolutionizing Brain Tumor Segmentation in MRI with Dynamic Fusion of Handcrafted Features and Global Pathway-based Deep Learning

  • Gliomas are the most common malignant brain tumor and cause the most deaths. Manual brain tumor segmentation is expensive, time-consuming, error-prone, and dependent on the radiologist's expertise and experience. Manual brain tumor segmentation outcomes by different radiologists for the same patient may differ. Thus, more robust, and dependable methods are needed. Medical imaging researchers produced numerous semi-automatic and fully automatic brain tumor segmentation algorithms using ML pipelines and accurate (handcrafted feature-based, etc.) or data-driven strategies. Current methods use CNN or handmade features such symmetry analysis, alignment-based features analysis, or textural qualities. CNN approaches provide unsupervised features, while manual features model domain knowledge. Cascaded algorithms may outperform feature-based or data-driven like CNN methods. A revolutionary cascaded strategy is presented that intelligently supplies CNN with past information from handmade feature-based ML algorithms. Each patient receives manual ground truth and four MRI modalities (T1, T1c, T2, and FLAIR). Handcrafted characteristics and deep learning are used to segment brain tumors in a Global Convolutional Neural Network (GCNN). The proposed GCNN architecture with two parallel CNNs, CSPathways CNN (CSPCNN) and MRI Pathways CNN (MRIPCNN), segmented BraTS brain tumors with high accuracy. The proposed model achieved a Dice score of 87% higher than the state of the art. This research could improve brain tumor segmentation, helping clinicians diagnose and treat patients.

교합 거상판을 이용한 뇌병변장애 환아의 자해성 구강 손상의 치료 (TREATMENT OF SELF-INJURIOUS LIP BITING WITH POSTERIOR BITE BLOCK APPLIANCE IN A BRAIN LESION PATIENT)

  • 본 증례를 통하여 뇌병변 장애 1급 환아에 자해성 구강손상이 발생한 경우 치료에 대해 고려할 점은 다음과 같다. 뇌병변 장애 1급을 포함하는 의식 저하 환자에서는 혀, 입술 씹기 등의 자해성 구강손상 발생 빈도가 높다. 연성 구강보호장치의 용이성으로 우선적으로 고려될 수 있으나, 연성 구강 보호 장치로 병소가 개선되지 않을 경우, 교합 거상판을 포함한 아크릴릭 레진 가철성 장치를 고려할 수 있다. 교합 거상판을 포함하는 아크릴릭 레진 가철성 장치 장착이후 구강 위생 관리 및 치료 부위 유지를 위해 주기적인 치과 검진이 필요하다.

태극권 수련자의 뇌파와 성격 및 식습관에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Brain Waves, Personality and Dietary Behaviors of Taekukkwon Practicianers)

  • Taekukkwon was practiced far health previously. The experimental group consisted of undergraduate and graduate students practising in the above disciplines at Myong Ji University. The group consisted of three female and three male students and the aim of this research was to measure the brain wave change for opened and closed eyes. The result of this research are as follows. Firstly, when students were subjected to basic open eye brain wave tests, beta-waves displayed for all regions of the brain. In the frontal region fast beta-waves were displayed and in the central region alpha-waves were displayed. Secondly, in the closed eye brain wave tests, the control group displayed beta-waves in some regions and alpha waves in external and internal regions. For all students\` brain-wave patterns, the amplitude of the alpha-wave was low and the frequency was high. In some students theta-waves were displayed. Taekukkwon practice relaxes the mind and body and helps relieve social stress which shows that taichichuan practices is beneficial. Finally, characteristics of the subjects were mostly type A so the personalities of the subjects were fast and aggressive. This research shows a definite link between personality and personal relationships with beta-waves emissions. So, further research is required in the future to investigate this relationship. The subjects consumed too large amount of foods so it was necessary to change their dietary habits taking into consideration on total calories, fats, and protein. It was also necessary to carrying out nutrition education to the students in emphasizing appropriate attitudes in general health and dietary behavior.

수면장애에서 나타나는 뇌 대사물질의 변화 : 불면증과 폐쇄수면무호흡증을 중심으로 (Brain Metabolite Changes in Insomnia and Obstructive Sleep Apnea)

  • Sleep is essential to brain function and mental health. Insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are the two most common sleep disorders, and are major public health concerns. Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) is a non-invasive method of quantifying neurometabolite concentrations. Therefore, 1H-MRS studies on individuals with sleep disorders may enhance our understanding of the pathophysiology of these disorders. In this article, we reviewed 1H-MRS studies in insomnia and OSA that reported changes in neurometabolite concentrations. Previous studies have consistently reported insomnia-related reductions in γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels in the frontal and occipital regions, which suggest that changes in GABA are important to the etiology of insomnia. These results may support the hyperarousal theory that insomnia is associated with increased cognitive and physiological arousal. In addition, the severity of insomnia was associated with low glutamate and glutamine levels. Previous studies of OSA have consistently reported reduced N-acetylaspartate (NAA) levels in the frontal, parieto-occipital, and temporal regions. In addition, OSA was associated with increased myo-inositol levels. These results may provide evidence that intermittent hypoxia induced by OSA may result in neuronal damage in the brain, which can be related to neurocognitive dysfunction in patients with OSA. The current review summarizes findings related to neurochemical changes in insomnia and OSA. Future well-designed studies using 1H-MRS have the potential to enhance our understanding of the pathophysiology of sleep disorders including insomnia and OSA.
