  • Leakage and Bragg condition of optical waveguides with blazed grating profile are evaluated in detail by using novel and rigorous modal transmission-line theory (MTLT) based on eigenvalue problem. The blazed waveguides classified as symmetric, sawtooth and asymmetric gratings occur leaky-wave stop-band at Bragg conditions and anomalies based on Rayleigh condition near Bragg conditions. Furthermore, DFB properties of blazed waveguides at Bragg conditions are analyzed by applying longitudinal equivalent transmission-line with characteristic impedance of periodic grating. The numerical results show that the reflected power of DFB waveguides is maximized at Bragg conditions in which leaky-wave stop-bands occur.

  • We theoretically and experimentally investigate the effect of apodization on the transmission characteristics of linearly chirped fiber Bragg gratings(CFBGs). Based on the UV beam scanning method along a phase mask, we fabricated several apodized CFBGs with different apodization profiles such as Gaussian, Raised-cosine, Blackman, and Hyperbolic tangent. During the UV beam scanning, the phase mask is dithered by a PZT(Piezoelectric transducer) which is precisely controlled by a computer program so that the apodization profiles can be flexibly applied to the grating. We measured the reflection spectra and group delay characteristics of CFBGs with the different apodization profiles, and compared them according to their properties such as reflectivity, sidelobes, and group delay ripple (GDR). The peak-to-peak of GDR could be suppressed to less than 20 ps.

  • We propose a novel optical channel-selective filter whose center wavelength and bandwidth can be fully controlled. The Proposed filter consists of three identical chirped fiber Bragg gratings (CFBG’s) with fiber stretchers which is to control the reflection spectra of the CFBG’s. We experimentally demonstrate that the proposed tunable filter can select arbitrary channels from a WDM signal.

  • We propose a new structure of bidirectional add/drop multiplexer that is a key component to implement bidirectional ring network. The proposed bidirectional add/drop multiplexer is based on fiber Bragg gratings. In experiment, we demonstrate the operation of the proposed bidirectional add/drop multiplexer in optical spectrum domain.

  • Holographic transmission gratings were performed by an Ar-laser( ${\lambda}$=514nm) intensity, the ratio fo LC contents to the surfactant. The addition of the surfactant to the LC and pre-polymer systems causes the droplet to maintain the ideal size at the high fraction(over 40wt%) of the LC contents that induce the films to be fabricated with high diffraction efficiency than that of no surfactant series. The image of these films was examined using a charge coupled device (CCD). We also studied the angular selectivity plots which support the important role in the multiplexer channel (MUX). Eventually, we showed the reconstructive optical image recorded in this transmission mode of HPDLCs.

  • Bragg gratings were fabricated in Ge-doped silica planar lightwave circuits (PLC) for different writing conditions to study the growth characteristics. The refractive index modulation of the gratings grew in the PLC with total fluence F according to the power law $\Delta$n=A $F^{B}$. The characteristics of the PLC gratings formed for external cavity lasers match closely to those predicted by the power law. The oscillation spectra of the FP-LD with a Bragg grating grown in the PLC waveguide were also presented.d.

  • I have investigated a scheme for suppressing stimulated Brillouin scattering in optical fibers. The scheme makes use of a sampled Bragg grating fabricated within the fiber used for transmitting intense Q-switched pulses. The grating is designed such that the spectrum of the Stokes pulse generated through stimulated Brillouin scattering falls entirely within its stop band. I show numerically that the number of sampled fiber Bragg gratings in 1 m is applied directly to suppressing stimulated Brillouin scattering rather than the coupling coefficient. This prevents the build up of the backward-propagating Stokes wave and mitigates the deleterious effects of stimulated Brillouin scattering. The simulation shows that 15 ns pulses with 1 kW peak power can be transmitted though a 1 m-long fiber with little energy loss using this scheme.

  • This paper demonstrates the development of optical temperature sensor based on the etched silica-based planar waveguide Bragg grating. Topics include design and fabrication of the etched planar waveguide Bragg grating optical temperature sensor. The typical bandwidth and reflectivity of the surface etched grating has been ∼0.2nm and ∼9%, respectively, at a wavelength of ∼1552nm. The temperature-induced wavelength change is found to be slightly non-linear over ∼200$^{\circ}C$ temperature range. Typically, the temperature-induced fractional Bragg wavelength shift measured in this experiment is 0.0132nm/$^{\circ}C$ with linear curve fit. Theoretical models with nonlinear temperature effect for the grating response based on waveguide and plate deformation theories agree with experiments to within acceptable tolerance.

  • In this paper, a fiber-optic current sensor for a bus bar conductor based on the fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The metal bus bar and a magnet are connected to each other through an FBG and the Bragg wavelength of the FBG is changed by magnetic force between the two connected devices. The experimental results showed that the Bragg wavelength of an FBG shifted by 650 pm as the 500 A direct current was applied to the bus bar.

  • In this paper, we designed and fabricated an input-output coupler system using two or three volume gratings at 632.8nm wavelength. The additional third grating is added at the output coupler to enhance the overall efficiency. The experimental results show that the total system throughput reaches 63% with two-grating and 75% with three-grating input-output coupler. We also present a design method to obtain the desired output power ratio between the gratings.
