  • The complete larval development of Philyra pisum De Hann, 1841 from hatching to the megalopal stage was obtained by culture in the laboratory. Two zoeal and one megalopal stages are described and illustrated . The frist zoea of the present species is very similar to those of other two Philyra species except for the reduced carapace spines. The first zoeae belonging to the subfamily Philyrinae can be divided into two groups based on the zoeal characteristics: the first group is composed of Arcania septemspinosa, A. undecimspinosa elongata, and Myra fugax, whereas the second group is composed of Philyra corallicola, P. syndactyla, and P. pisum.

Effects of Temperature on Larval Growth and Survival in the Wrinkled Swimming Crab (Liocarcinus corrugatus) (Brachyura: Portunidae) Reared in the Laboratory (주름꽃게 (Liocarcinus corrugatus) 유생의 성장과 생존에 대한 온도의 영향)

  • The effects of temperature on the growth of larvae of wrinkled swimming crab (Liocarcinus corrugatus) under controlled laboratory conditions of 15, 20 and $24^{\circ}C$ were investigated (33.5 psu: 12L: 12B). Each specimen was maintained individually, the instar size was determined from exuvia, and the survival and intermolt period of each instar were recorded. There were no significant differences (P>0.05) in the survival rates at 15, 20, and $24^{\circ}C.$ Comparison of survival over the first 27 days between the three temperature regimes showed significant differences (P<0.001). The intermolt period increased with the instar number, and was greatly extended at the lowest temperature. The molt increment varied little with temperature, and had a mean value of $21.35\%$ over the whole study. Temperature had little effect on survival and molt increment.

  • an analysis of stomach contents of skipjack tuna Katsuwonus pelamis and plankton samples collected during troll fishing operations showed that the abundance of some dominant organisms in tuna stomachs was related to their abundance in the plankton. Fish larvae mainly pilchards, Nyctiphanes australis, brachyuran and other decapod larvae and calanoid copepods are important food item for skipjack. The copepods Undinula vulgaris and Nannocalanus minor occurred consistently throughout the survey period in both stomach contents and plankton samples. U. vulgaris appeared to be a preferred food considering its high percentage composition in tuna stomachs compared with its low percentage composition in the plankton. Temora turbinata and N. minor may also serve as important food items for skipjack. The largest catches of the fish were made in January and February when plankton organisms were composed dominantly of N. australis, copepods and brachyuran larvae. The main stomach contents during this period were N. australis and brachyuran larvae.

  • Two flavons, which are a new flavon (the Authors are going to call it "CLEMATISIN") and a yellow crystalline flavon, are isolated from leaves of Clematis brachura Maxim. Clamatisin : A colorless needle crystal which has a Slightly sweet taste, mp 225 .deg.C (decomp). It is positive (Cherry red) for the Mg-HCl(Hg) reaction and is positive (purple) for the $FeCL_{3}$ reagent. It is soluble easily in methanol, ether, acetone, prydine, ethylacetate, hot water and alkali-solutions. It is soluble slightly in cold water and is insoluble in chloroform, benzene and toluence. According to the results of elementry analysis and molecular weight determination the formula of clematisin agrees with $C_{18}H_{18}O_{7}$ when dried at $80^{\circ}C$, crystalline clematisin (from water) contains one molecule of crystalline water. The following derivatives are prepared ; Clematisin-oxim; a colorless needle crystal, mp 215-216 .deg.C, Clematisin methylate; prepared by diazomethan. mp 191-$192^{\circ}C$ a colorless needle crystal. Acethylmethylate; a colorless powder, It is not sharp in melting point and melts at approximately $215^{\circ}C$, Yellow Crystalline Flavon; mp 285-$286^{\circ}C$ (dexo-mp.), yellow needle crystal. It has a slightly sweet teste and shows positive reaction Acetate; a colorless needle crystal, mp $168^{\circ}C$.

  • Feeding habits of Pagrus major collected in the coastal waters off Busan from January to December 2004 were studied. P. major ranged form 8.5 to 44.6 cm in standard length. P. major was a carnivore which consumed mainly hermit crabs, amphipods, crabs, shrimps, polychaetes, echinoderms, and fishes. Its diets included small quantities of gastropods, bivalves, stomatopods, cephalopods, cnidarians, and isopods. It showed ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. Small individuals (8~15 cm SL) preyed mainly on shrimps. However, individuals from 15 cm to 25 cm SL preyed mainly on hermit crabs and polychaetes. Individuals over 25 cm SL preyed mainly on fishes and echinoderms.

  • The zoeal development of the pilumnid crab, Pilumnus minutus De Haan, 1835 consisted of 4 zoeal stages. The duration of the zoeal stages was at least 15 days at $25^{\circ}C$. The morphology of the zoeal stage is described in detail, and comparisons are made with the known larvae of other species of the family pilumnidae. The Pilumnus minutus zoea strongly resembles zoeae of other species of the genus Pilumnus in the mouthpart setation and the carapace spines, but shows some differences in the abodominal lateral knobs. the Pilumnus minutus zoea has some affinities with the Parapilumnus trispinosus zoea by having the abodominal lateral knobs on somites 2, 3, 4 and 5.

Fauna of the Crabs on the Coasts of the Western Islands of Korea (한국서해 도서 연안의 게류 분포상)

  • The author colelcted crabs (Tribe Brachyura ) on the coasts of fourteen western islands of South Korea (Paenyong Do, Taechong Do, Sochong Do, Taeyonpyong Do, Kanghwa Do, Yongjong Do, Chagyak Do, Tokchok To. Moktok To. Pukkyoknyolbi Do. Ong Do, ANmyon Do, Pigum Do, and Taehuksan Do) mainly in summers during a period ranging from 1955 to 1962. Of these Islands, Paeknyong , Taehong, Taeyonpyong, Ong, Anmyon, Pigum and Taehuksan Do are the localities where the crabs were investigated firstly by the present author. The collections made by the author consist of 1779 specimens of crabs involving 9 families. 25 genera, 33 species and 5 subspecies (Table2). 23 species of crabs had been reported hitherto from Tokchok To and 7 from Kanghwa Do. In present paper the author adds 1 species to the fauna of crabs of Tokchok To and 7 to that of Kanghwa Do. Among 38 species or subspecies of crabs collected, Oregonia gracilis, Cancer amphioetus and Chaesmagnathus convexus are new to the fauna of the west coast of Korea. 57 species of crabs are therefore identified in this area. The author collected Pinnotheres cardii on Taechong Do and Scopimera bitympana on Pigum Do. It became, therefore, clear that these two kinds of crabs occur much wider areas than known hitherto in Korea. The nothern limit of the distribution of Ocypoda stinpsoni and Sesarma haematocheir is Kyungki Bay as known already, that of Helice tridens is ,however, more northern part than Kyungki Bay, since they were collected on Paeknyong Do.

Feeding Habits of the Marbled Flounder Pseudopleuronectes yokohamae in the West Sea in Korea (한국 서해에 출현하는 문치가자미(Pseudopleuronectes yokohamae)의 식성)

  • The feeding habits of the marbled flounder Pseudopleuronectes yokohamae were studied using 384 specimens (10.7-52.3 cm in total length) collected from the West Sea, Korea between January and December 2021. P. yokohamae ate mainly polychaeta and gastropoda, incuding teleostei, caridea, euphausiacea, amphipoda and brachyura. The mean number of preys per stomach (mN/ST) showed a statistically significant difference, and the mean weight of prey per stomach (mW/ST) increased as the total length increased. P. yokohamae ate mainly teleostei in spring and winter. P. yokohamae ate mainly euphausiacea in summer and mainly polychaeta in autumn.

  • The feeding habits of the Pacific cod Gadus macrocephalus were studied using 620 specimens collected by bottom trawl and pound net in the Southeast sea of Korea, from February 2012 to June 2013. Of 620 specimens, 192 contained food and 428 were empty. The total length (TL) of individuals used in this study ranged from 20.4 to 95.2 cm. Pacific cod mainly consumed Pisces, Macrura, and Cephalopoda. Its diet also included small quantities of Anomura, Brachyura, Mysidacea, Isopoda and Amphipoda. The proportion of Pisces in prey items increased with increasing Pacific cod length, but seasonal difference was not observed. The proportion of Macrura and Cephalopoda decreased with growth, and seasonal differences were apparent. Macrura were taken there mainly from autumn to winter, whereas Cephalopoda were consumed from spring to summer.

  • This paper documents the defining morphological characteristics of the larval stages of Chionoecetes tanneri Rathbun, 1893, the grooved Tanner crab, from specimens reared in the laboratory. Chionoecetes tanneri larval stages include two zoeae and one megalopa. The first zoea is characterized by: six setae on the posterior margin of the carapace; postero-lateral spines on abdominal somites 3 and 4, extending beyond the posterior margin of adjacent somites and bearing 9-10 spinnules; 12 plumose setae and one stout distal plumose seta present on the margin of the scaphognathite of the maxilla; and one fused lateral spine and one articulated dorso-medial spine on each fork of the telson. The second zoea is characterized by: 9 setae on the postero-lateral margin of the carapace; a serrated mandible molar; a mandibular palp bud; 25-26 plumose setae on the margin of the scaphognathite of the maxilla; pereiopods with well-developed gills and buds; and four pairs of stout setae on the posterior margin of the telson. For the megalopal stage, the distinguishing characteristics include: a rostral spine equal in length to the supraorbital spine; six setae on the exopod of the uropod; and a single spine on the ischium of the second pereiopod. This study allows C. tanneri larvae to be distinguished from the larvae of known sympatric congeners. This information provides a basic taxonomic tool for researchers in fisheries management and zooplankton ecology who are addressing issues related to trophic interactions, metapopulation dynamics and ecosystem impacts in the evolving marine resource management strategies in the North Pacific, and those related to Chionoecetes species in particular.
