Seismic Performance Evaluation of Apartment Buildings with Central Core

  • In this study the seismic performances of reinforced concrete apartment buildings with Y- and box-shaped plans having central core are investigated. Three types of model structures are designed for each shape depending on the amount of shear partition walls: structures with all shear walls, structures with all columns except the core walls, and structures with shear walls and columns combined. The required amount of concrete to satisfy the specified design loads is the largest in the all shear wall structures, and decreases as more and more shear walls are replaced with columns. The amount of re-bars increased significantly in the flat plate structures. According to nonlinear static and dynamic analysis results, the structures with all shear walls and all columns turn out to have the largest and the smallest strengths, respectively. However it is observed that even the all-column structures with shear core have proper load resisting capacity for design level seismic load.

Development of Pilot-Scale Scrubber for Simultaneous Removal of $SO_2/NO$

  • SOx and NOx are known major precursors of acid rain and thus the abatement of their emissions is a major target in air pollution control. To obtain basic data on the removal process of simultaneous $SO_2/NO$, the optimal reaction condition and the composition of reaction solution for simultaneous removal of $SO_2/NO$, ware investigated using a bubble column reactor. Pilot scrubber was consisted of scrubber, filter and control box. Dust removal rate was 83, 92, and 97% with catalyst flux of 0.5, 0.8, 1.5 L/min, respectively Average dust removal efficiency with a kind of nozzle was about 94 and 90% in STS FF6.5 (5/8in.) and 14 of P.P W(1.0in.), respectively Dust and $SO_2$ were removed more than 98-96% regardless of reactor number. In the case of NO gas, removal yield of 83.3% was achieved after 48 hours in 1 stage, also removal yield of 95.7% was reached in 2 stages. In tile case of application of STS (5/8 in.) and P.P (1.0 in.) as used fill packing, removal efficiency was reached higher than 98% without related to of kind of fill packing.

The elastic deflection and ultimate bearing capacity of cracked eccentric thin-walled columns

  • The influence of cracks on the elastic deflection and ultimate bearing capacity of eccentric thin-walled columns with both ends pinned was studied in this paper. First, a method was developed and applied to determine the elastic deflection of the eccentric thin-walled columns containing some model-I cracks. A trigonometric series solution of the elastic deflection equation was obtained by the Rayleigh-Ritz energy method. Compared with the solution presented in Okamura (1981), this solution meets the needs of compatibility of deformation and is useful for thin-walled columns. Second, a two-criteria approach to determine the stability factor ${\varphi}$ has been suggested and its analytical formula has been derived. Finally, as an example, box columns with a center through-wall crack were analyzed and calculated. The effects of cracks on both the maximum deflection and the stability coefficient ${\varphi}$ for various crack lengths or eccentricities were illustrated and discussed. The analytical and numerical results of tests on the columns show that the deflection increment caused by the cracks increases with increased crack length or eccentricity, and the critical transition crack length from yielding failure to fracture failure ${\xi}_c$ is found to decrease with an increase of the slenderness ratio or eccentricity.

A fiber beam element model for elastic-plastic analysis of girders with shear lag effects

  • This paper proposes a one-dimensional fiber beam element model taking account of materially non-linear behavior, benefiting the highly efficient elastic-plastic analysis of girders with shear-lag effects. Based on the displacement-based fiber beam-column element, two additional degrees of freedom (DOFs) are added into the proposed model to consider the shear-lag warping deformations of the slabs. The new finite element (FE) formulations of the tangent stiffness matrix and resisting force vector are deduced with the variational principle of the minimum potential energy. Then the proposed element is implemented in the OpenSees computational framework as a newly developed element, and the full Newton iteration method is adopted for an iterative solution. The typical materially non-linear behaviors, including the cracking and crushing of concrete, as well as the plasticity of the reinforcement and steel girder, are all considered in the model. The proposed model is applied to several test cases under elastic or plastic loading states and compared with the solutions of theoretical models, tests, and shell/solid refined FE models. The results of these comparisons indicate the accuracy and applicability of the proposed model for the analysis of both concrete box girders and steel-concrete composite girders, under either elastic or plastic states.

Preliminary Modelling of Plasco Tower Collapse

  • In a recent tragic fire incident, the Plasco Tower collapsed after an intense outburst of fire lasting for three and a half hours and claiming the lives of 16 firefighters and 6 civilians. This paper will present continuing collaborative work between Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Queen's University in Canada to model the progressive collapse of the tower. The fire started at the 10th floor and was observed to have travelled along the floor horizontally and through the staircase and windows vertically. Plasco Tower was steel structure and all the steel sections were fabricated by welding standard European channel or angle profiles and no fire protection was applied. Four internal columns carried the loads transferred by the primary beams, and box columns were constructed along the perimeter of the building as a braced tube for resisting seismic loading. OpenSees fibre-based sections and displacement-based beam-column elements are used to model the frames, while shell elements are used for the reinforced concrete floor slabs. The thermal properties and elevated temperature mechanical properties are as recommended in the Eurocodes. The results in this preliminarily analysis are based on rough estimations of the structure's configuration. The ongoing work looks at modeling the Plasco Tower based on the most accurate findings from reviewing many photographs and collected data.

목포항 주변 하구역의 영양염 수지 (The Budget of Nutrients in the Estuaries Near Mokpo Harbor)

  • LOICZ(Land-Ocean Interactions in the Coastal Zone) 모델을 이용하여, 목포항 주변의 하구역(영산호 하구역, 영암호-금호호 하구역)에서 일어나는 생지화학적인 순환 과정을 이해하고자 계절별 영양염 수지를 산정하였다. 비성층화 시기인 2008년 5월, 9월, 11월에는 simple three-box model을 적용하였고, 성층이 발생했던 7월에는 two-layer box model을 적용하였다. 물질 수지를 산정한 결과, 5월과 7월에 외해역으로부터 영양염이 역유입되었고, 외해수와의 혼합에 의한 교환($V_{X-3}$, 또는 $V_{deep}$)을 통해 하구역으로 유입되는 영양염(DIP) 부하량이 인공 호수의 대규모 방류 영향을 받은 육상기인 유입량보다 더 많았다. 그리고 9월 물질 수지 결과에서는 하구역과 외해역의 영향을 동시에 받는 하구역 입구(sub-region III)에서 영양염의 과잉 적체가 발생되었다. 저수온기(11월)에 인공 호수(영산호)의 방류 영향이 없는 하구역에서는 영양염이 제거되었고, 담수 방류(영암호-금호호)의 영향을 받은 하구역에서는 수주 내 영양염이 축적되는 것으로 나타났다. 이와 같은 결과들은 목포항 주변 하구역으로 유입되는 영양염들이 육상에서 기인할 뿐만 아니라, 외해역 그리고 하구역 내에서도 추가 공급되고 있다는 점을 시사하고 있다. 따라서 목포항 주변 하구역의 수질 관리를 위해서는 담수를 통한 육상기인 영양염 부하량을 저감하는 방안과 함께, 주변 해안으로의 영양염 유입도 저감하기 위한 통합 환경관리 대책이 수립되어야 할 것으로 판단된다.

북동적도 태평양 KODOS 97-2 해역 심해저 퇴적물 내의 ATP 분포양상 (Distribution of ATP in the Deep-Sea Sediment in the KODOS 97-2 Area, Northeast Equatorial Pacific Ocean)

  • 심해저 망간단괴 채광에 따른 저층생태환경의 변화를 평가하기 위한 기초환경연구의 일환으로 북동적도 태평양 심해저 퇴적물 내의 총 ATP(T-ATP), 용존 ATP(D-ATP) 그리고 입자성 ATP(P-ATP)의 농도 및 수직분포양상을 연구하였다. T-ATP는 퇴적물 6 cm 깊이 내에서 4.4~40.6, D-ATP는 0.6~16.1, 그리고 P-ATP는 3.0~29.2 ng/g dry sediment의 범위로 변했다. T-ATP의 약 84%, D-ATP의 약 81% 그리고 P-ATP의 약 74%가 표층 퇴적물 2 cm 이내에 분포하는 것으로 나타났으며, 분포양상이 퇴적물 내의 함수율과 높은 상관관계를 나타냈다. 이러한 결과는 심해저 퇴적물 내의 미생물(P-ATP) 분포가 수층으로부터 전달되는 유기탄소에 의해 결정됨을 의미한다. 다중주상 시료채집기를 사용해 획득한 퇴적물에서 P-ATP 최대층이 0~0.5 cm 깊이 내에 존재하는 것으로 나타나, 표층이 교란되는 상자형 퇴적물 채집기보다는 다중주상 시료채집기가 심해저 퇴적물내 ATP의 미세수직구조의 연구를 위해서 더욱 효과적인 것으로 판명되었다. 결론적으로 ATP 농도가 퇴적물 깊이 6cm 이내에서 뚜렷한 수직분포양상을 보이는 것으로 미루어, ATP 분포양상이 향후 심해저 광업에 따른 미생물 생체량 변화를 평가하기 위한 유용한 환경기초자료로 사용될 수 있는 것으로 나타났다.

고려시대 대혜보각선사서의 보존처리 및 과학적 조사 (Conservation Treatment and Scientific Investigation of Daehye Bogakseonsaseo (Letters of Master Bogak) in the Goryeo Dynasty)

  • 국립중앙박물관 소장 대혜보각선사서는 1387년에 제작된 고려시대 서책으로 2005년 입수 되었으며 전체적인 손상이 매우 심각하였다. 이에 장황 특성과 과학적 분석을 통해 제작기법과 재료를 조사하였고 이를 토대로 전체 보존처리가 진행되었다. 서지학적 특성으로 장황형태는 오침안선장본(五針眼線裝本)이며 판식은 광곽이 사주단변(四周單邊), 계선은 무계(無界)이다. 보존처리는 기본 형태 조사 와 보존처리 과정을 살폈다. 형태는 겉표지와 원표지, 면지, 내지로 구성되어 있으며 내지는 0.04~0.07mm로 일반적인 책지에 비해 매우 얇은 특성을 보인다. 표지와 내지 모두 열화로 인한 부서짐이 심각한 상태로 판단되어 전체 해체를 통해 보존처리가 진행되었다. 보존처리는 해체-클리닝-결손부 보강-스캔-제책 과정을 거쳤으며 오동나무상자를 제작하여 보관하도록 하였다. 해체 시 내지와 책 끈의 시료를 채취하여 섬유식별을 진행하였다. 내지 섬유식별은 사프라닌과 C-stain 염색으로 식별하였다. 사프라닌 염색 결과 섬유벽이 두껍고 마디와 왜곡, 투명막이 확인되었고, C-stain 염색결과 탁한 적색을 띠고 있어 닥나무 섬유로 식별하였다. 책 끈은 단면이 편평한 원형의 형태이며 중앙부분에 루멘이 관찰되어 면섬유로 판별하였다.

  • 란탄은 사용후핵연료의 연소도 지표원소들 중 하나로써 이용되고 있다. $U_3Si/Al$ 사용후핵연료는 다량의 U과 Al 속에 미량의 La이 포함되어 있어 정량시 매질의 영향을 줄이기 위해 화학적 분리가 요구된다. La의 분리 및 측정을 위해 IC-ICP-MS를 이용하였으며, 우선 방사성 시료를 취급하기 위하여 유도결합 플라스마 질량분석기의 플라스마 부분 및 분리관을 방사선 차폐 글로브박스 내에 설치하였다. CG10 분리관과 ${\alpha}$-HiBA 용리액을 사용하여 U, Al, La 및 몇 가지 핵분열생성물 (Sr, Zr, Y, Mo, Ru, Pd, Rh, Cs, Ba, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu 및 Cd)의 머무름 거동을 살펴보았다. 0.2 M ${\alpha}$-HiBA 용리액에서 U과 Al이 초기에 용출되므로 분리관과 ICP-MS의 시료분무기 사이에 3방향 밸브를 연결하여 다량의 U과 Al이 ICP-MS로 유입되지 않도록 하므로써 매질의 영향을 줄일 수 있었다. 이 조건에서 La은 약 12분 정도에 분리 및 측정이 가능하였으며, $1-10{\mu}g/L$ (ppb)의 농도범위가 측청에 적합하였고 시료양을 $200{\mu}L$ 취할 경우 La의 검출한계는 $0.25{\mu}g/L$이었다.

Bacillus subtilis를 이용한 대두 발효식품의 혈전용해능

  • A strain producing strongly fibrinolytic enzyme was isolated from soil and was identified to be Bacillus subtilis by biochemical and physiological characterization. The optimal culture conditions for the production of fibrinolytic enzyme was determined to be 1.0% tryptone, 1.5% soluble starch, 0.5% Peptone, 0.5% NaCl, $(NH_{4})_{3}PO_4.3H_{2}O, and MgSO_{4}.7H_{2}O.$ Initial pH and temperature were pH 8.0 and $30^{\circ}C$ , respectively, The highest enzyme production was observed at 30 hours of cultivation at $30^{\circ}C$ The fibrinolytic enzyme was purified to homogeneity by DEAE Sephadex A-50 ion exchange column chromatography, 70% ammonium sulfate precipitation, Sephadex G-200 and G-75 gel filtration column chromatography. The molecular weight of the purified enzyme was 28,000 as determined by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. A gene encoding the fibrinolytic enzyme was cloned into a plasmid vector pBluescript, transforming E.coli XL-1 Blue. The clone was able to degrade fibrin, This indicated that the gene could encode a fibrinolytic enzyme. The nucleotide sequence of the 2.7 kb insert was determined in both direction. One open reading frame composed of 1023 nucleotides was found to be a potential protein coding region. There was the putative Shine-Dalgano sequence and TATA box upstream of the open reading frame. The homology search data in the genome database showed that both the 2.7 kb insert and 1 kb open reading frame carried no significance in the nucleotide sequence of known fibrinolytic enzyme from Bacillus serovars. The recombinant cell harboring the novel gene involved in fibrinolysis was subjected to protein purification. The molecular mass of the purified fibrinolytic enzyme was determined to be 31864 Dalton, which was highly in accordance with the molecular mass(33 kDa) of the fibrinolytic gene deduced from the insert. The fibrinolytic enzyme was Purified 50.5 folds to homogeneity in overall yield of 10.7% by DEAE Sephadex A-50 ion exchange, 85% ammonium sulfate precipitation, Sephadex G-50, Superdex 75 HR FPLC gel filtration. In conclusion, a novel fibrinolytic gene from Bacillus subtilis was identified and characterized by cloning a genomic library of Bacillus subtilis into pBleuscript. For the soybean fermented by this strain, it is found that there increased assistant protein about 20% compared to the soybean not fermented and increased about 30% according to amino acid analysis and, in particular, essential amino acid increased about 40%. When keeping this fermented soybean powder at room temperature for about 70days, it showed very high stability maintaining almost perfect activity and, therefore, it gave us great suggestion its possibility of development as a new functional food.
